Surprise: Obama’s FCC Quietly Proposes Nationwide Internet Tax, Says it Will “Reduce Uncertainty”
Center For Individual Freedom ^ | 18 March 2010 | Timothy H. Lee

The Obama Era has become a protracted, nightmarish Whack-A-Mole game of tax increases and bureaucratic self-enlargement. In sector after sector of American life, another scheme to expand government and wrench more earnings from Americans’ pockets pops up.

Its next targeted sector? The Internet.

Digital Goods and Services Taxation

RECOMMENDATION 4.20: The federal government should investigate establishing a national framework for digital goods and services taxation.

The National Broadband Plan is focused on increasing beneficial use of the Internet, including e-commerce and new innovative business models. The current patchwork of state and local laws and regulations relating to taxation of digital goods and services (such as ringtones, digital music, etc.) may hinder new investment and business models. Entrepreneurs and small businesses in particular may lack the resources to understand and comply with the various tax regimes.

Recognizing that state and local governments pursue varying approaches to raising tax revenues, a national framework for digital goods and services taxation would reduce uncertainty and remove one barrier to online entrepreneurship and investment.

Tax internet users so that the poor can get free broadband.

See how simple that is?

Just like Healthcare.

Now we will apply it to EVERYTHING until everyone is poor equally.

Imagine my relief --

I don't make over $250,000 so I don't have to pay this internet tax.

Right?

Good Lord the government is packed with flaming retards -- "...including e-commerce and new innovative business models."

Entrepreneurs built entirely new business models and e-commerce on their own without any government "help" or intervention. Private investors poured money into venture capital firms to fund all sorts of innovation. Some succeeded beyond anybody's wildest dream. Others looked promising and totally flopped. Has anybody in government even heard of Amazon, eBay, NetFlix or the Apple iTunes store and iPod ecosystem? What about Webvan?

It is so depressing reading day after day what the government wastes our money on and their incessant plans to extract more of our hard-earned cash.

I'm re-watching Broken Trail right now and just try to imagine what it was like to be alive in 1898 with the government not raping you daily or intervening in your daily life in myriad ways.

Think of it and many new taxes also as Sharia compliant jizya in addition to the usual, traditional purposes. “Protection” taxes are an expanding class of taxes that will restrict speech, publications, economic behavior etc. Govt uncertainty as to what the public is thinking, writing and doing will be universally known, analyzed and acted upon. Individual thinking is out and collectivist thinking and compliance is in.

Zimbabwe-style inflation is on the agenda too, along with mandatory wage increases, so we’ll all be making more than $250k soon.

Forbidding internet taxes would equally “reduce uncertainty”, would it not? But where’s the power and control in that?

“I don't make over $250,000 so I don't have to pay this internet tax.

Right? “

Sure. Just like the poor that roll their own cigarettes didn't have to pay the 2700% tax increase on loose tobacco that Hussein signed into law just days after he took office!

Good for small businesses, I know you laughed too
and this
“current patchwork of state and local laws and regulations relating to taxation of digital goods and services (such as ringtones, digital music, etc.) may hinder new investment and business models. Entrepreneurs and small businesses in particular may lack the resources to understand and comply with the various tax regimes.”

That is weak even for the Marxist.
So the engine that runs the economic growth( small businesses) is too stupid to understand and comply so Benevolent Uncle Obama will just create a new higher tax.
Dear Lord, we must save ourselves

Well, the problem with this is the Supreme Court ruled that Internet Sellers can not be forced to withold sales tax if they have no "brick and mortar" presence in a state, so unless they plan to amend the constitution, this isn't going anywhere.

What I think the democrats would like to do is create a defacto "National Internet Sales Tax" under the guise of collecting tax on internet sales and distributing it to the states to avoid the Supreme Court ruling. Of course this is dangerous because it allows the Federal Government to get it's foot in the door of the Sales Tax business and how long will it be until they decide to expand the Internet sales tax to all purchases and keep a portion to pay for their latest socialist program? Also it gives the feds another hammer to use on the states to force them to accept things like Obamacare, they will threaten to withhold Internet Sales Tax revenue.
