U.S. bases in Afghanistan say goodbye to Whoppers, DQ
Afghanistan Crossroads ^ | 3/25/10 | Brad Lendon

Whoppers, Dairy Queen sundaes and the latest movies will soon disappear for U.S. military personnel serving in Afghanistan, according to a blog posting by Sgt. Maj. Michael T. Hall discussing changes to morale, welfare and recreation facilities on U.S. bases there.

In an effort to put more focus on fighting the Taliban, the military is cutting back on "non-essentials" in Afghanistan, Hall announced on the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan blog this week. Hall is the command sergeant major for ISAF.

On large U.S. facilities such as the Kandahar and Bagram air bases, that includes closing restaurants such as Burger King, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius and Pizza Hut, dropping first-run movies from base theaters and cutting the amount of canned and bottled goods imported from the States, Hall writes.

“This is a warzone – not an amusement park,” he writes.

CNN polled this.

95% say the troops deserve those things.

Yes, take away the things that remind the troops of home ... that will boost morale. /s

Sgt. Maj. Michael T. Hall...wasn’t asked, didn’t tell? Leave our men alone, Mary.

Sheesh.. Can’t smoke. Can’t eat junk food. Maybe this is a trade off to send more KY and condoms for the new “flamboyant” soldiers Obama and Gates likes.

I would be willing to bet that the majority making these decisions have never served a day in the military.

ISAF - I saw Americans Fighting.

Forget about the DQ.

Those kids deserve beer tents and girls.

*But*

It is a real issue regarding the amount of war material coming in to these outposts.

There’s only so much infrastructure.

We built huge airfields in the Pacific during WWII in weeks.
The question is why haven’t we done that in Afghanistan.

Oh jeeze. I had more than one First Sgt. like him way back when.

Reminds me of "1st. Sgt. Be-no Ramsey" The troops nicknamed him Be-no because he continually said, "There'll be no this and there'll be no that".

Lighten up Sarge - it's an all volunteer force ya know.

My husband was at a crappy little post in Iraq and would have given his left leg for either of those things. It’s a shame to take them away from the troops. Any little taste of home is a help over there.

“What it comes down to is focus, and to using the resources we have in the most efficient and effective ways possible. Supplying nonessential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need resupplied with ammunition, food and water”

insufficient resources from the CIC is the way I read this.

C’mon Sarge. Can’t I have just one bite of that animal style Double-double before I try to disarm this IED?
