From a thoroughly Catholic perspective, the health care reform debate wasnt nearly as simple as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops made it out to be, as though preventing public funding of abortion and negotiating conscience clauses was enough to render Obamacare worthy of Catholic support. This, however, is exactly the stance taken by the USCCB from the very outset, and it only opened the door for those difference-making pro-life legislators to take comfort in the promise of an executive order restricting federal funding of abortion and to justify voting yes.

This article on Catholic Exchange highlights the faulty way in which the US Catholic Bishops Conference approached the health care reform debate, and their socialist tilt toward policy in general.

One of my biggest reliefs, when I finally left the Catholic church, was not to be in anyway associated to this socialist organization.

Yup. Bart Stupak is a good Catholic.

It is most fortunate for the government that the voters are ignorant.

It was always an embarrassment to me, to be associated to them.

Yes they did. I have sadly concluded that they were just about as phony as Stupak.

Welcome from FR. Be sure to bring your flamesuit when dealing with the religious bigots around here.

It was always an embarrassment to me, to be associated to them. You don't need them. You do a fine job of embarrassing yourself without them.

Yeah, welcome to FR Lou-eee, Lou-eye.

The
Catholic Medical Association adopted a resolution in our annual national meeting that reaffirmed the teaching concerning subsidiarity by making it the first topic of the resolution. From the social teaching aspect, I believe this is the most compelling argument. Why the bishops didn't adopt it, I don't know.

Bart Stupak is a good Catholic.Either he is, or I am. It can't be both.

I’m sure you are now sitting back patting yourself for being so clever, but, what on earth did that mean?

Is that a Catholic teaching, I completely missed? Making fun of people who you disagree with?

To: brytlea
I'm not sure either.
I thought that what you said made sense, especially in light of this story.
Without the abortion issue the Catholic church would have been all for this bill. A very sad truth.
To: johniegrad
Excuse me, I didn’t start this game. You said something which seemed rude and now you won’t explain yourself. How courageous of you.

Most of the Catholics I meet here on FR are kind and while they would love me to come back to the church, they are not rude. There are those out there tho who hate nothing worse than a former Catholic. It’s sad, and it’s not very Christlike, but there you are. Perhaps this is not what he meant, and if so, I offered him the opportunity to explain himself. However, you see where that got me.
