Health Care A Right? More Like A Wish
Investors.com ^ | March 8, 2010 | WALTER WILLIAMS

Most politicians, and probably most Americans, see health care as a right. Thus, whether a person has the means to pay for medical services or not, he is nonetheless entitled to them. Let's ask ourselves a few questions about this vision.

Say a person, let's call him Harry, suffers from diabetes and he has no means to pay a laboratory for blood work, a doctor for treatment and a pharmacy for medication. Does Harry have a right to XYZ lab's and Dr. Jones' services and a prescription from a pharmacist? And, if those services are not provided without charge, should Harry be able to call for criminal sanctions against those persons for violating his rights to health care?

You say, "Williams, that would come very close to slavery if one person had the right to force someone to serve him without pay." You're right.

Suppose instead of Harry being able to force a lab, doctor and pharmacy to provide services without pay, Congress uses its taxing power to take a couple of hundred dollars out of the paycheck of some American to give to Harry so that he could pay the lab, doctor and pharmacist. Would there be any difference in principle, namely forcibly using one person to serve the purposes of another?

There would be one important strategic difference, that of concealment. Most Americans, I would hope, would be offended by the notion of directly and visibly forcing one person to serve the purposes of another. Congress' use of the tax system to invisibly accomplish the same end is more palatable to the average American.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.

The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

The ubiquity of things that have come from innovation, competition and the free market tends, unfortunately, to convince some that because a thing is plentiful it should be free.

Opposition to KenyanCare IS about INDEPENDENCE! It’s about FREEDOM and individual responsibility. It’s about saying “I will accept responsibility for MY OWN HEALTH” and “your health IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.”

It is about leaving ultimate health care decisions where they belong: WITH GOD! You are always free to PRAY TO DOCTOR GOD for healing. God’s healing can come through direct miracles or by God’s direction to charities and health care providers to help you.

Can’t pay the doc? maybe you should have planned better and saved your money or bought health insurance. If you didn’t, then, you’d better hope the doc FREELY CHOOSES to help you at no charge because you have ZERO claim on his services as a “right.” Otherwise, your next line of defense is charity — which should be REAL charity based on donations freely made and not FORCED taxation.

When all else fails, there is nothing to keep you from treating yourself for your own ailments. Making ME pay should not be on the table.

Bottom line: If you TRUST IN GOD, then you can be sure that He WILL MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION and bring you what you need/deserve when you need/deserve it — even if it isn’t what you THINK you want.

Freedom always involves risk. And yes, some people will get more than others. But that is a SMALL price to pay for LIBERTY! We need to get the government 100% OUT of health care!

In the end, free people are called to live with the consequences of their OWN ACTIONS and the judgement of ALMIGHTY GOD. Government has NO RIGHT to interfere with that process!

Yes, I WOULD rather die than receive KenyanCare. Absolutely. God has more wisdom than all the death panels put together!

Most politicians, and probably most Americans, see health care as a right.

That's pretty much our problem right there. Politicians and citizens that don't know the difference between a right, a privilege, a responsibility and a wish. Health care is not any ones right. Health care is a necessity for a successful society and it requires that society develop the means to produce it and deliver it efficiently and in sufficient quantities just like food and water.

I still think that the “there’s no right to health care” is the wrong approach.

I have the undoubted right to keep and bear arms, but that doesn’t mean that if I can’t afford a rifle someone else has to pick up the tab to get me one.

I have the right to freedom of the press, but that doesn’t mean the state should tax my fellow citizens to buy me a printing press, ink and paper.

So, too I have the right to health care, food and shelter, but just like the right to keep and bear arms, and the right of freedom of the press, I have to pay for the exercise of those rights out of my own resources, not a subvention from the state.

Actually my right to health care is mightily infringed by the government: they tell me I can only get it from state-licensed physicians, many beneficial drugs can only be obtained with the permission of a state-licensed physician, the state defines what things need to be covered by insurance to help defray health care costs, forbids mutual insurance companies from writing health insurance policies, forbids me from buying health insurance from a company in another state. . .

So, basically, your argument is that we cannot have socialized medicine because it would prevent us from affording the socialized medicine we already have.

Maybe if people didn’t think healthcare was a right, they would take better care of themselves - eat right, excercise, quit smoking, etc. Instead, we are a nation of fat slobs looking for a magic pill to cure our diseases, reduce our blood pressure, get aroused, etc. and magic procedures to reduce our fat.

How about FREE Car service for my Car? I REALLY REALLY need my Car to go to work so I can pay my taxes so that everyone can have free health care as is their RIGHT!

I can’t even use the motorcycle or a bicycle because I have to schlepp keyboards, guitars, amps, and basses around.

And since I am self-employed, I pay LOTS of taxes!

Millions of Illegals and people on Welfare DEPEND on Me!

I am ENTITLED to FREE CAR SERVICE and FREE GAS! It’s in the Constitution, right after the clause containing My Right To Free health Care, a Free Abortion on Demand and The Separation of Church and State!

(Do I need one of these..( /silly sarcasm )?
