US missile shield not targeting Russia, Bulgaria says

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov on Wednesday played down Russian protests over Sofia's plans to join a United States missile shield in Europe. "This shield is not directed against threats coming from Russia. On the contrary, the threats that exist for us equally exist for our Russian friends," Mladenov told bTV television.

"We have to find a way to protect us all," he added.

Bulgaria said last week that it favoured new US plans for a shield in Europe to counter missile threat from Iran and the Middle East.

But the announcement angered Russia, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov demanding an explanation for the "surprise" decision by Bulgaria, which was reputedly the Soviet Union's staunchest ally in communist times.

"I cannot comment on the word 'surprise' in this case. There is dialogue between NATO and Russia, in particular on how Russia and the NATO countries can protect themselves against potential new threats," Mladenov said.

While Bulgaria wanted to come under the shield, it has not so far been engaged in any talks to host missile interceptors or any other of its elements, the minister said.

How would a shield target anything?? Of course I believe the best defense is a good offense.

Someone please explain to me how a few defensive missles placed for protection against rogue nations would possibly affect Russia’s nuclear deterrent against the USA? Sheesh, they still have enough nuclear warheads to pretty much destroy the planet. I’m sick of Russia’s posturing. Is there something in the water or vodka that makes them so paranoid? They are a strange culture.

In their defense, 800 years of invasions will do that to a people.

All that being said, would we be comfortable with Chinese missile interceptors in Cuba and Puerto Rico?

It’s a macho thing, I guess. This was the same kind of fooferaw that arose over the proposed defensive missile control installation in Poland. The Bear doesn’t want Iran to be neutralized as a threat to the West, is my best guess. The Bear would have no compunctions about glassing Iran over itself from border to border.

We could mow those down like a Bushhog on a golf green.
