Romney's new character: Macho man
The Boston Phoenix ^ | February 10, 2010 | DAVID S. BERNSTEIN

Posted on 02/14/2010 6:35:04 PM PST by Leisler

In his new book, Mitt makes himself over as a muscular defender of America.

Few things are more predictable than a GOP presidential candidate posturing as a he-man protector of America, and depicting his Democratic counterpart as an effete, appeasing girlie-man on the dangerous world stage. Mitt Romney — who himself has no personal military or foreign-policy experience of any kind — may not seem well-suited to the Republican role, but hey, if draft-dodgers like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney could use the formula against a genuine war hero, anything is possible.

Romney, presumably warming up for 2012, flexes his hawkish muscles in No Apology: The Case for American Greatness, which is due for release in early March from St. Martin's Press. He will promote the book not with the giggly, mall-atmosphere spectacle of Sarah Palin's recent tour in support of Going Rogue, but with a series of lectures and speeches (with some book signings mixed in). He is establishing himself as the Serious One, the grown-up in the 2012 field........

Quote.......

"Climate change is occurring," and is caused at least in part by human activity. "Global warming is a real and present danger."

- The 2008 TARP bank bailout was necessary and "did in fact keep our economy from total meltdown."

- Some Republicans "are overly fond of bashing regulation," but in fact government regulation of business — "stringent standards that are rapidly, efficiently, and consistently applied" — are necessary and beneficial.

- The financial meltdown was not merely the fault of Democrats and poor people, but was also due to an "absence of dynamic regulation," and errors and bad judgment by Wall Street executives, credit-rating agencies, Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve, average Americans who became real-estate speculators, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, and even George W. Bush.

- A stimulus package "was called for" after the late-2008 economic downturn, and the Democrats' stimulus "will accelerate the timing of the start of the recovery."

- Privatizing Social Security would be a mistake; any creation of individual accounts should be voluntary, and in addition to Social Security.

- The "Fair Tax" would save money for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class, and is therefore "not an outcome that will or should gain traction with the American people."

These days, this kind of reality-based thinking doesn't go over well in conservative circles. Perhaps Romney can change that, but I'll believe it when I see No Apology pass Going Rogue's sales figures.

Mitt is trying to get thousands of people to show up for a booksigning event in Salt Lake City. It sounds like the books will be pre-signed, you pay the money, you get a book, pay more money you get to actually meet him, pay even more money, and you get to listen to him speak. I’d prefer Palin’s event, stand in line long enough you get your book signed, and get to meet her, all for the price of a book.

Why Mitt isn’t doing it the way Palin, and just about everyone else does it, is because he knows he wouldn’t attract too many people doing it that way, and it would be embarrassing.

Is anyone more masculine that these brave warror types?

"One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share."

Sincerely, W. Mitt Romney (and my five light in the loafers, sons)

Trying to paint Romney as a macho man is akin to painting Joe Biden as a wise intelligent man capable of much deep thought.

Macho Man?

Actually, when I see Romney he reminds me more of a "metrosexual" than a "macho man".

Romney is so...so...."last election".

I believe it is four-months-and-I-am-out-of-here Kerry. But then again, Kerry spent more time in uniform then the entire genealogy of Romney males. So, I guess it’s relative. For lefties, any military service, for them, is heroic.
