Romney To Fundraise For Thune

Get out the long lenses in South Dakota: Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is making one of his first high-profile fundraising stops of the 2010 midterm cycle later this month for none other than Sen. John Thune (R-SD), chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee.

Romney will join Thune for a fundraiser to benefit the senator's re-election bid at the Holiday Inn City Centre in Sioux Falls, SD, on Feb. 19, according to a copy of the invitation obtained by National Journal. The suggested contribution is just $100.

Romney and Thune met several years ago in the Capitol and have seen each other at a couple of social functions since then, but they have never made a joint appearance. Sioux Falls and Sioux City, Iowa, a conservative bastion in the first-in-the-nation pres. caucus state, share a media market, so photos of the once and likely future pres. hopeful and a possible rival -- or ticket-mate -- will hit voters in the caucus state.

"This has 2012 written all over it. Two high-profile Republicans in the same place -- one who has already run for president and one who is being encouraged to do so -- to have them together makes for quite a photo-op," said one veteran GOP strategist.

The rest of Romney's itinerary has yet to be determined, but an IA GOP strategist said he doubted Romney would drop down to the Hawkeye State since he is scheduled to be there for his book tour in March. "But to have two superstars like that together, people will pay attention. It wouldn't be unheard of for the two of them to do a media avail," the operative said, since the media market reaches a wide swath of northern Iowa.

As for Thune, with $6M in his war chest and no Dem challengers on the horizon ahead of the Mar. 30 filing deadline, why the early, splashy fundraiser? As Thune campaign manager Justin Brasell put it, "Sen. Thune has been through 2 grueling and very expensive Senate races, and if there is one lesson he took away from those contests it's that you can never be too prepared."

Romney has no chance of being the Republican nominee in 2012. If he couldn’t beat a very weak field of candidates in 2008 (McCain, Rudy, Thompson, etc.) he won’t be able to beat a much stronger crop in 2012.

Romney would make a good Treasury Secretary though.

Interesting that South Dakota Democrats have not yet fielded a Senate candidate. Thune is well liked here in South Dakota and I cannot imagine any Democrat candidate who would seriously challenge him in the general election.

What is his stand on the Second Amendment?

He looks like he has a high brain case - must be smart. The last few Presidents were - well, you know.

Just checked out Thune. Forgot about the Thune Amendment.

He looks great:

As for Romney - less than happy with him. He does have bucks, is photogenic, waffles on his philosphies and is well spoken. Still, I can think of a lot of others I would rather see in the Oval Office.

I’m having a difficult time not being snarky. Consider that Senator Thune was able to divest tommy, the tax dodger, two tongues of his senate seat, you might give some thought to the dem/republican ratio in the Senate without him, and I’m quite sure he doesn’t agree with the screaming minority, who venomously appose Mr Romney. Times change and people change, despite the agonized screams of those who stand in judgment of their fellow man.

PS, We got big problems in this country and plenty of people to judge without eating our own, especially Senator Thune.

I supported Senator Thune in both runs for the Senate, as I think you know.

But, since then I’ve come to believe that we as a movement and a nation need to take a much harder line, especially on the defense of innocent human life. John’s rape and incest exceptions are unconstitutional, illogical, and immoral, and so I won’t be supporting him any longer, unless he recants. It’s really that simple. But it isn’t just Thune. I’m taking that position consistently concerning all candidates.

And I put a big check mark next to anyone who plays ball with Romney. I think he’s a lying liberal and the biggest phony in American politics today. I think he’s dangerous.

Maybe the stance of one activist won’t matter in the least. But that’s what my conscience dictates and I’m willing to leave the results of that decision in God’s capable hands.

Ya know, I find it hard to get upset that Romney is helping raise funds for GOP candidates as long as he isn’t trying to use it to bootstrap a further candidacy of his own. Perhaps this is his best function for the party.

Romney is a leveraged buy-out guy, that's how he made his fortune. And he's been utilizing those skills throughout the GOP universe for quite some time. He and his close allies have been busy buying up anyone and everyone who can be bought. Do you think he's been doing that out of altruism?

Huckabee says what he wants in his own name.
Unlike GOP-traitor Mitt Romney's and his minions' knives fresh with the coppery smell of Gov.Palin's and her childrens' blood on them all done secretly, through junior staff's spouses.
