Throughout the campaign, he and his staff professed that he was a lifelong Christian. Don't know who baptized him, or when as his mother was agnostic, his fathers muslim, and his grandmother a Unitarian.
It matters because he lied to those who "cling to religion".
At least Christopher Hitchens is upfront about his contempt for those who believe in God.

Yes, Obama’s faith is a matter of interest, mainly because he made it so, partially by mimicking the cadence and style of a southern tent preacher in his 2004 address to the Democrat convention.
I think that it is curious that little was said about the statements that the Obamas were not celebrating Christmas in Hawaii, nor were they exchanging gifts. No tree, no gifts, in Hawaii, but they had a tree at the White House with pictures of Chairman Mao hanging from the tree.
Karl Marx’s spirituality was also largely private, but influential.
