Exclusive: Obama Would 'Rather Be Really Good One-Term President'

President Obama, buffeted by criticism of his massive health care reform bill and election setbacks, said today he remained determined to tackle health care and other big problems despite the political dangers to his presidency.

"I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president," he told ABC's "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview today.

-snip-

"You know, there is a tendency in Washington to believe our job description, of elected officials, is to get reelected. That's not our job description," Obama said. "Our job description is to solve problems and to help people."

The president said he was not deterred by the problems with the health care bill.

Seated across from Sawyer in the White House, the president added, "I don't want to look back on my time here and say to myself all I was interested in was nurturing my own popularity."

I’d like to see him be a really good one-term President too, but I’ll be satisfied as long as the one-term part is right.

Starting to make excuses for his 2012 lose in 2010. Who would have thought?

If you believe Obama isn't interested in his popularity, I've got a Chicago mansion to sell you!

I don’t think he truly wants a second term anyway, other than the sting of not being reelected being tough on his massive ego. Being President is too hard. He’d rather draw that nice comfortable lifetime pension, give paid speeches to people who want to see him, and vacation a lot.

"You know, there is a tendency in Washington to believe our job description, of elected officials, is to get reelected. That's not our job description," Obama said. "Our job description is to solve problems and to help people."

Well... when is he going to start with the solving and helping?

I’m glad he let all the democrats in congress know this. Maybe they’ll be less willing to stick their necks out for him. Alot of them are probably interested in another term. They won’t have the cushy speach circuit and book deals, not to mention the paybacks that Obama will.

He’s lying (again).

He just said that HE will be the one that keeps election 2010 from being like the ‘94 blow-out.
