Reporting from Sacramento - Speeding may be dangerous for drivers, but it could soon be a boon for California's fiscal health.
Tucked deep into the budget that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled Friday is a plan to give cities and counties the green light to install speed sensors on red-light cameras to catch -- and ticket -- speeding cars.
Those whizzing by the radar-equipped detectors at up to 15 mph over the limit would have to pay $225 per violation. Those going faster would be fined $325.
That would add up to big bucks for cash-strapped California -- about $337.9 million through June 2011 -- to pay for state courts. Every year after that, the program would generate nearly half a billion dollars, the Finance Department says. Local governments would get a share.
The proposal also touted safety: "There would be . . . fewer accidents and injuries to drivers, passengers and pedestrians."

Hey California - when you get the ticket in the mail, throw it away! You have not been legally served. We have the same red light and speeding cameras scam in AZ. It’s not raising the promised funds because people here know that unless you are served by a process server, you don’t have to voluntarily give your hard earned cash to the government.
Politicians lay awake at night dreaming and scheming of new angles to screw more money out of the decreasing minority who still work and produce so they can hand it over to the illegals, moochers and other Obama voters.
Here’s what amazes me. Just about a week ago there was an article in the Arizona Republic, I believe, about how this system is a dismal failure. No one can guarantee that anyone personally receives the speeding ticket in the mail, therefore, it has to be served IN PERSON, but there is only a 90 day window to do that. Arizona/Janet Napolitano thought this would be a cash cow, and it isn’t. In fact, the company that manufactures these hasn’t even broken even.
Here’s my question. DON’T THESE IDIOTS IN GOVERNMENT EVER, EVER!!! RESEARCH THEIR ‘BRAINY’ IDEAS TO SEE IF THEY’VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL, ANYWHERE??? For cryin’ out loud. Universal healthcare is another boondoggle, but by God, we’re going to have it here in America come hell or high water. WE (the elites) know how to make it a booming success. The level of disillusionment is beyond anything I would have believed possible.
If these units use radar, then I see a booming market for radar detectors as well as a possible black market for jamming devices.
I would disagree, and I would propose that the Founders would also disagree.

This would be especially fun if one knew the route the local traffic court judge takes to work every day...
It worked at first. People were not aware that they had to be personally served and willingly paid the fines. Talk radio was key in educating the public here (AZ) to just throw the ticket away. Same thing will happen in CA. People will pay at first and then word will get out and they will start ignoring the tickets.
We hate the cameras here in AZ. We found out that they shortened the yellow light time to make sure more people got tickets. It has nothing to do with safety. It’s all about generating cash.
Simple solution, albeit one that requires unity and universal cooperation: Have everyone drive at 10 mph at all times.
Wear a Muslim burqua, and they won't see your face. That would be a quick way to get burquas banned.

Speed limits are set artificially low so that governments can pluck the odd chicken they catch from time to time. It's all about revenue.
Some cars are capable of being driven safely faster than others.
A new BMW, for example, is probably safer at double the speed as an old Volkswagen Beetle.
Just look at this crash test. They smash a '59 Chevy into an '09 Chevy...
