Target Corp. retooled a training video to warn workers against a bill that would make union organizing easier. Michaels Stores Inc. told investors our businesses could be impacted by the measure. Enrollment in Jackson Lewis LLPs How to Stay Union-Free seminars tripled.
Companies are rallying to fend off a so-called card-check law sought by labor leaders and backed by President Barack Obama. While the bill stalled in Congress this year as health- care legislation dominated debate, anti-union groups say they expect the president and Democrats to deliver next year on a compromise version of the legislation.
As we approach the 2010 elections, the unions are really going to want their pound of flesh, said Randy Johnson, who handles labor issues for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nations largest business lobbying group. Even if we defeat the card-check bill, its entirely possible that other changes to the National Labor Relations Act will come up, and some of those will likely make it easier to organize the workplace.

This card-check crap is very bad.
Very bad.
Retail unions are about as useless as they come, and unless the management is abusive in some way that has the workers really angry not welcomed by the employees.
Card check the elected officials...see who is qualified and who is not, better yet dump em all.
Unions are more about preserving the power structure OF the Unions then they are about caring about the workers or businesses.
Everyone I talked to that works at Target is fairly happy with their jobs, I hope Target can keep the Unions at bay.
I think Mark Dayton former D senator from Minn is the from the family that founded Target. Not sure how much they have to do with it now.
They are wise to be concerned. The unions did not bankroll the Democrat Party through 25 yrs. in the wilderness expecting not to get payback.
interesting that the article mentions Target (which is essentially run by a bunch of big Libs) and IKEA (which is owned by Swedish Socialists!) Not practicing what you preach now, eh?
Libs complain about Walmart. Why have I never heard them complain about Target?
I assume it’s because Walmart is the bigger, easier, fly-over country target. I’ve suggested that if Walmart were unionized, libs would sing songs about them.
If we really want to reign in the unions all we have to do is force them to collect their own dues instead of forcing the company to deduct it from paychecks.
They won’t last long passing around their own collection plate.
True story...local businessman has several grocery stores. They have been around since well before I was born. Employs a lot of people, gives generously to anyone local that needs it, donates time as well as money, pays his workers a good wage and offers benefits. The local food workers union has been picketing the man for 20+ years. They pay people $10 an hour to stand just beyond the property with pickets. The workers do not want a union and would take home less with one. Union doesn’t care and they forced the closure of one of the smaller stores. They would rather see people out of work than not in their damn union.
I worked in an AFL-CIO affiliated independent union shop. Our independent union had good relations with the company. We made less than our UAW counterparts but we had excellent benefits and found that the rules were far more flexible.
The UAW picketed our shop on several occasions and endlessly pushed us to vote them in.

IF card check is passed, the PAYBACK will be millions fewer jobs.
I have been a bookkeeper for over 35 years, self-employed and working for small businesses who didn’t need a full time person.
I would advise every single small business to carve themselves back to the very barest bones that they can. Then spend the next few months until a new President in in the Oval office working on whatever plan for expansion you may be interested in.
Meanwhile, let NObama and his Federal government and the states whose Congress persons support NObama can deal with millions on unemployment.
I absolutely would not just cave in.
