True story...local businessman has several grocery stores. They have been around since well before I was born. Employs a lot of people, gives generously to anyone local that needs it, donates time as well as money, pays his workers a good wage and offers benefits. The local food workers union has been picketing the man for 20+ years. They pay people $10 an hour to stand just beyond the property with pickets. The workers do not want a union and would take home less with one. Union doesn’t care and they forced the closure of one of the smaller stores. They would rather see people out of work than not in their damn union.

I worked in an AFL-CIO affiliated independent union shop. Our independent union had good relations with the company. We made less than our UAW counterparts but we had excellent benefits and found that the rules were far more flexible.

The UAW picketed our shop on several occasions and endlessly pushed us to vote them in.
