NYT critic: Palin knows how to dress
The Charleston Daily Mail ^ | December 28, 2009 | Don Surber

Posted on 12/28/2009 10:35:10 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Cathy Horyn, fashion critic of the New York Times since 1999, is now a Public Enemy of the Huffington Post after admitting the obvious: Sarah Palin dresses nice while Michelle Obama is at the peril of designers.

Horyn broke the cardinal sin of the left; she said something nice about Mrs. Palin.

Wrote Horyn: “I like the way she dresses. The straight skirt and white blouse, the trim jacket with an open neck and three-quarter sleeves — the look is clean, tailored and energetic. It’s businesslike without being boring, smart without being insider. You don’t need to read a fashion magazine to understand it. That was how Ms. Palin dressed on her book tour. And it’s the way a lot women would like to dress, and probably do, when they don’t have time or many choices and think that accessories always wind up looking prissy.”

On Mrs. Obama, Horyn was respectfully snickering, writing: “Play a mental game of paper dolls and put one of Mrs. Obama’s printed or belted dresses on Ms. Palin. She looks frumpy.”

Both women are about the same age and height, although Mrs. Palin may weigh less. If the dress makes Mrs. Palin look frumpy…

What really drove the Huffington Post was the observation that Mrs. Palin dresses like most women while Mrs. Obama is designer crazy with closets of fancy dresses. The president’s lady has a knack for selecting the wrong thing to wear.

Wrote Horyn: “Fashion is also context. And in the year since the industry placed its absurdly bright hopes on Mrs. Obama and her wardrobe, much has changed and dimmed. Is this how a modern, educated, working woman wants to be viewed in her first historic year — as a maven, an icon? Who’s Barbie now?”

Her column is here.

Well, Rosalyn Hoffman, who wrote the misanthropically titled, “Bitches on a Budget,” was upset that a fashion critic would criticize women’s fashion.

Interesting take by someone who writes about fashion.

Wrote Hoffman: “In our usual favorite fashion writer’s piece comparing Sarah Palin’s style to Michelle Obama’s she takes to task Ms. Obama’s fashion choices. Ms. Horyn writes: ‘Is this how a modern, educated, working woman wants to be viewed in her first historic year — as a maven, an icon? Who’s Barbie now?’ Meanwhile, Ms. Horyn extolled the simple, chic, everywoman style Sarah Palin exhibited pre-RNC-bankrolled shopping spree. Wow.”

So, Horyn committed two sins: Praising Mrs. Palin and dumping on — ever so lightly — Mrs. Obama.

The fact that one of her favorite writers displeased her had Hoffman curl herself into the fetal position of feminism.

Wrote Hoffman: “Mother, sister, wife, party girl, caretaker, bread winner, Victoria’s Secret model, budget maker, housekeeper. Who are you? How does your style relate to your identity? Big questions, but something tells us that today’s women are grappling with them in a new way.

“It’s no wonder that in a country whose governing leaders are mostly men, whose major corporations are by and large led by men, that women are left feeling exhausted and unempowered. We need a voice that understands that we want to be attractive and smart and have careers — and we want to be heard and represented — and we want to dress on our own terms, and look amazing, and know it. All without getting fleeced.”

So there you have it. Having to dress nice is why women are not CEOs.

It is like she is stuck 40 years ago in the 1960s.

Both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Palin were born and raised after feminism revitalized itself. Maybe — just maybe — they like dressing up.

Mrs. Palin is just better at it.

The Hoffman response is here.

No comparison between the two women. One is a fine looking, intelligent, lady.

The other...well, see for yourself.

Ya know what? I could care less about fashion. I would rather concentrate on political issues. Fashion is the MOST useless industry in the world.

'Both women are about the same age and height"

They might be about the same age, I'm not sure. But, they certainly aren't the same height. MO must be at least 5'10'', where Palin is in the 5'6"-5'7", I believe

But, the author is correct otherwise, Palin does always look more professional and neatly attired than either of the Obamas, and certainly more than Hilary Clinton, who sometimes looks like she just rolled out of bed.

The other looks like Gargantua, and was banned from practicing law in Illinois, something that is only done for unethical or criminal behavior.

I’m no carnival guy, but I’d say the big O has at least 40 lbs on Palin. Look at the width of her hips and midsection.

That aint helium in there....

There's a phenomenon called “having good taste” or “having class” that you can't buy off the rack or haute couture. Mrs. Palin has it. Mrs. Obama doesn't.

Its not the most useless. It bores me to tears ... but its always good to have a wife that knows what she’s doing. ;)

I’d say it’s waaaaayyyyy more than 25 lbs. I’d say it’s much closer to 65lbs. I also thought michelle had about 5 inches in height on Sarah.
