A plant that started life during the last Ice Age is still going strong in the arid scrublands of California, scientists revealed today.
Researchers believe the Jurupa Oak has been around for 13,000 years, making it the oldest living plant in the world.
The oak is made up of a community of cloned bushes and scientists believe it has managed to survive the extreme effects of climate change by regenerating.

I thought scientists had determined that there were creosote bushes and aspen colonies that were older than this.
Can’t be true, the earth isn’t that old.
I planted it!...............
Helen Thomas planted it as a seedling in her youth
I no longer believe what researchers 'believe'. Either they prove it or shut up.
I baited the hook ,and look at the trash fish I pulled in first cast...
Based on its estimated age, it was already a sapling when Columbus set sail for the new world....
Written by a botanical illiterate.
The tree CAN produce its own “seeds”, and perhaps propagate from spreading roots. Go figure; a solitary tree produced more of its own species/offspring which may or may not be genetically identical to the ‘parent’.
The author clearly never passed basic botany and would likely believe that deciduous dicotyledons are a dinosaur species.
Have some fun and stick a sign on it saying “Free Firewood - You Cut” one night.
I have an axe that goes all the way back to Henry VIII. Of course it’s had ten new heads and twelve new handles since.
Who indoctrinated you about the age of Earth, the Earth been around for a few billions of years
Boy have you messed up, the world is only 6,000 year old crowd will whip you.
The oak is made up of a community of cloned bushes and scientists believe it has managed to survive the extreme effects of climate change by regenerating.
You mean these scientists admit there was climate change before Obama discovered it?
I grew up in Mt.Pleasant, SC, just outside of Charleston. I love the old Live Oaks, each one is so different from the others. The street I lived on was lined with Live Oaks, all with Spanish Moss hanging down. I am sure that most of the trees were older than the country.
Human race is hundreds of thousands of years old; survives by procreating "future generations".
I know that, but some of the best arguments I’ve been in or followed have been over this very subject.
As soon as scientists make a claim of something being older than what people believe the bible tells us it is all h*ll breaks loose. Kind of fun watching people argue against the vast amounts of data collected by scientists with a few lines from a single book.
There are also some magnificent trees just to my south in Avery Island, LA...
And there is a fine for releasing that thing - bury it.
:-)
Hey, wanna trade? I have Washington’s ax that he used on the cherry tree. Mine is newer, 3 heads and 4 handles.
