Evacuation Day beacons to relay news from 1783
Times Herald Record ^ | November 25, 2009 | Jeremiah Horrigan

Posted on 11/25/2009 7:33:27 AM PST by Pharmboy

The British weren't coming — the British were gone.

That was the message Gen. George Washington communicated to the newly independent nation 226 years ago, on Nov. 25, 1783, the day Washington officially "took back" Manhattan from the British.

Without benefit of Paul Revere or Western Union, the victorious general relied on burning beacons set along the Hudson Highlands to celebrate the day, now known as Evacuation Day.

On Nov. 25 of this year, the memory of those beacons and the message they brought to the country will be invoked along the same hilltops by a variety of historical groups and agencies.

It won't be an exact replication of the original wooden beacons, which were 20 feet high and stuffed with dried grass. The upcoming memorial will rely on electricity to get its message across.

Look for 12 searchlights along the 108 miles between Beacon and Princeton, N.J., to be lit sequentially from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Up until WWI, when we allied with the Brits in a big way, the raucous celebration of Evacuation Day stopped in NYC.

Happy Evacuation Day, all!

You think we could ask the Brits to help save us from our enemies in DC?

Well, the last time they showed up with a large group in DC, they burned it down. But, times change...

Boy...I would have thought that was a sarcastic remark, but with this guy living at 1600 Penna Ave., one cannot be too sure.

I never thought I'd wax nostalgic about the War of 1812, much less from the Limey side...

But, times change...

Boy, have they ever.

What is the point of lighting freedom beacons in New York and New Jersey? No such thing exists in either of those states. Also, as far as I know, Princeton, New Jersey, is not anywhere near the Hudson Highlands, nor is it part of the new Jersey Highlands, where I used to live.

Oh wait, this is from the Times Herald Record, that bastion of Orange County liberty that thinks Mike Bloomberg is insufficiently intrusive into the personal habits of New Yorkers. Perhaps the THR could start an effort to change the name of it to Rosie O’Donnell eats another 300 pounds of barbequed sausage day. They could keep the beacons and then demand that they be banned.

Well, yeah, Princeton area is pretty flat, but I imagine that's where one of the original fires was positioned.

And just like the San Francisco area, there are plenty of conservatives in NY and NJ. We know who we are...

My best advice is to leave while you still can. Obama took Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Indiana by slim margins. Those states represent 73 electoral votes.

Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico also could have gone either way, representing another 31 electoral votes. You can make the argument that McCain would have been no better than Obama, and there is some truth there. But McCain certainly couldn’t be any worse, and there wouldn’t be any Maoists or communists in the administration. Nor would McCain be likely to bow to our enemies and insult our friends.

2012 is coming up. It would be nice if you and I could save the northeast, but there is a tremendous pool of stupidity there. Besides, if you move to Florida, you can help us get rid of Bill Nelson. Florida needs money and energy. Nelson’s opposition to offshore drilling, as well as his status as Florida’s only phony astronaut, could cost him the election.

Revolutionary War Beacons 21st Century Style

Trenton, NJ ~ Celebrate “Evacuation Day” with the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area and our partners on Tuesday, November 25, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. We will commemorate with a Skytracker light display the 225th anniversary of the day in 1783 when the British quit the United States in defeat. The Crossroads of the American Revolution Association will symbolically light seven beacon signal system sites in New Jersey that closely replicate signal locations used by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The xenon light display will stretch from Greenway Meadows in Princeton to Ramapo Mountain State Forest in Oakland.

These vital systems summoned the militia in both New Jersey and neighboring New York and warned residents of the approaching British Redcoats. The types of beacons varied from tar barrels on top of poles, to pyramids, to wooden towers filled with dried grass or hay that could be ignited.

Instead of lighting fires to celebrate this 225th anniversary, the Crossroads Association will illuminate the heritage area with 21st century xenon lights. Twin Lights of Navesink in Highlands will participate by sending out a beam from the lighthouse. Collaborating with the Crossroads Association in the commemorative beacon lighting are: Morristown National Historical Park, the NJDEP Division of Parks and Forestry, Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, the Beacon Hill Club, Summit and the Township of Princeton.

We are also grateful to the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of New Jersey for their sponsorship of the beacon lighting event.

There’s more. The beacon project is part of a bi-state celebration with New York State. Our partners in New York—Palisades Park Conservancy, the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area and Scenic Hudson will light five additional beacons from Bear Mountain State Park to Beacon. The entire beacon signal system lighting will stretch 108 miles from Princeton, NJ to Beacon, NY.

The twelve beacon light display locations in New Jersey and New York will be:

New Jersey
Greenway Meadows, Princeton Township, Mercer County
Washington Rock State Park, Greenbrook, Somerset County
Morristown National Historical Park, Morristown, Morris County
The Beacon Hill Club, Summit, Union County
South Mountain Reservation, South Orange, Essex County
Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Oakland, Bergen County
Twin Lights of Navesink, Monmouth County

New York
Bear Mountain State Park, Bear Mountain, NY
Storm King Mountain State Park, Cornwall, NY
Scenic Hudson’s Spy Rock (Snake Hill), New Windsor, NY
Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, Newburgh, NY
Scenic Hudson’s Mount Beacon, Beacon, NY

New Jersey’s landscape, people, and natural resources directly affected the course of our nation’s struggle for independence. Without the Ten Crucial Days—the victorious battles of Trenton and Princeton—victory would not likely have been achieved. During the Revolutionary War, New Jersey was the setting for significant events and strategic conflicts: encampments in Morristown and Middlebrook as well as the battle of Monmouth, the largest one-day artillery battle of the American Revolution. Our state also boasts

Morristown and the Wallace House in Somerville. These houses are among thirteen Revolutionary War National Historic Landmarks in the state, including Rockingham in Somerset County where General Washington wrote his Farewell Address to the Army in November 1783, when the Continental Congress was sitting in Princeton, then the nation’s capitol.

In addition to the historical significance of the locations, they also highlight the importance of preserving our historic landscapes through both public and private efforts.

New Jersey’s Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area was established by Congress in 2006 to recognize, preserve and interpret the nationally significant historical, cultural and natural resources in the state. The heritage area stretches from the heights of the Palisades at Fort Lee in Bergen County to the shores of the Delaware in Gloucester County. It includes 213 municipalities in all or parts of 14 counties, 13 National Historic Landmarks and more than 250 indoor and outdoor spaces on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Crossroads of the American Revolution Association is the managing organization of the heritage area and is a non-profit corporation exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations are welcome and are tax-deductible. Contributions should be sent to the Crossroads of the American Revolution Association, PO Box 1364, Princeton, NJ 08542 or by using our secure Web site link found at www.RevolutionaryNJ.org.

Thanks much for your posts, JH. Yes, I remember the post from last year and was actually quite surprised that they had it planned for this year as well.

AFAIC, any RevWar activity done nowadays is great!
