President Obama Didn't Impress Asia (he labeled himself "America's first Pacific president")
Wall Street Journal ^ | Nov. 22, 2009 | John Bolton

Posted on 11/22/2009 2:57:06 PM PST by La Enchiladita

Barack Obama's first visit to Asia since his inauguration was one of the most disappointing trips by any U.S. president to the region in decades, especially given media-generated expectations that "Obamamania" would make it yet another triumphal progression. It was a journey of startlingly few concrete accomplishments, demonstrable proof that neither personal popularity nor media deference really means much in the hard world of international affairs.

The contrast between Asia's reception for Obama and Europe's is significant. Although considered a global phenomenon, Obamamania's real center is Europe. There, Mr. Obama reigns as a "post-American" president, a multilateralist carbon copy of a European social democrat. Asians operate under no such illusions, notwithstanding the "Oba-Mao" T shirts briefly on sale in China. ...

What the president lacked in popular adulation, however, he more than made up for in self-adulation. In Asia, he labeled himself "America's first Pacific president," ignoring over a century of contrary evidence. The Pacific has been important to America since the Empress of China became the first trading ship from the newly independent country to reach the Far East in 1784. Theodore Roosevelt created a new Pacific country (Panama) and started construction on the Panama Canal to ensure that America's navy could move rapidly from its traditional Atlantic bases to meet Pacific challenges. William Howard Taft did not merely live on Pacific islands as a boy, like Obama, but actually governed several thousand of them as Governor-General of the Philippines in 1901-1903. Dwight Eisenhower served in Manila from 1935 to 1939, and five other presidents wore their country's uniform in the Pacific theater during World War II—two of whom, John F. Kennedy and George H.W. Bush, very nearly perished in the effort.

I don’t know anyone that Obama impresses.

I'm guessing you don't spend much time in the black community cause they still worship the "black Jesus".

I have to listen almost daily to stupidity about how Obama is turning things around from what Bush messed up, even as many of them lose their jobs. They just can't see it past the color of his skin.

Really pathetic to see!

First he bows and scrapes, so to make up for the mistake, he starts bragging....in Asia......dumb, dumb, dumb.

Asians love expressions that are cautious, steady, stable and socially correct. They laugh at anything else. And when they are laughing at you, it will take 10 years to get your "face" back.

Braggarts and narcissists are especially despised. It's best to scrub "I" "me" and "my" from your vocabulary.....and it's far too late for ObaME to undertake that personality change.

"I think that must have been small ‘p’ pacific, president.

LOL!!

I'm trying to be gracious (honest!): Is there ANY other way to interpret Obama's "we have no desire to contain China" than as an open invitation for China to invade Taiwan? Anybody? What else could he possibly mean?

Let's see: McKinley conquered the Phillipines, and won Guam for the US as well. I also seem to remember some Eisenhower guy setting up SEATO. There was also a rather large world war where we spent about 4 years all over Asia.

Our first Pacific President was Millard Fillmore, who authorized Matt Perry's expedition to Japan.

Speaking of Japan, those "Japs" are our top allies in Asia, and would gladly commit their defense forces (don't dare call it an army) in a conflict with China.

Here is the Obama-Mao t-shirt, known locally as the “Oba-Mao” which is a raging seller in China as their communist public sees parallels between socialist U.S. President Barack Obama and Chairman Mao, the first communist head of state in China.

I don't really know what the Chinese people think of Mao. Tell me, is this an insult or a compliment to Obama?

Uh, no. Mao had a rougher upbringing and I do not think Zero would have survived the Long March, much less led it himself.

Heh... I think that someone has finally hit upon the answer...

The question still exists is why so many of these “idiots” still watch these networks? It is possible that they should be included in the 30% of idiots so why should these be placed into the 18 percent of other...?

Even the WaPo guest commentator on the FoxNews Sunday panel said the trip was unproductive.

Apparently, his isn’t getting very good reviews from anyone.

Maybe he should have refered himself as being the BN. Maybe they would have listened to him then.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTIklFsMjjU Now before some of you hit the abuse button, remember, this was a TV series back in the 70’s.

If the GOP had any guts they would have gone to the area of Chicago where he was a rabble rouser and took a video of the place and the asked is this the change you want, is this how you want to see America because this is what obama has been doing for this area.

BINGO! Right on the money.

Seriously, putting aside his sociopathic narcissism and the massive ego that he has to erect in order to avoid admitting much of where he is is due to affirmative action of one type or another...

what in the name of hell does it mean to be a “Pacific president?”

He is becoming...just...foolish at this point.

“Which reminds me. I am sure that others have pointed this out but I’ll repeat it: Obama is our first president who did not wear a military uniform since FDR. And FDR had a good reason to not wear one, he couldn’t walk on his own.”

President Clinton never wore the uniform. I think he tinkered with his ROTC status at one time to avoid being drafted.
