Palin attracts Fort Wayne throng (and give media whatfor)
Politco ^ | 11-19-09 | Andy Barr

Posted on 11/19/2009 12:58:13 PM PST by STARWISE

By sunrise Thursday, more than 500 people had lined up here in a wet Indiana supermarket parking lot in hopes of sharing a brief moment with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Despite the fact that most in line had to stand outside Meijer’s, a big box grocer and retailer with 31 checkout lanes, Palin’s fans waited patiently and politely, flipping through the pages of her new memoir “Going Rogue” as they chanted “Sarah, Sarah” and took turns getting coffee and donuts.

Like the conservative icon that some had driven a considerable distance to meet, the otherwise buoyant crowd harbored hard feelings about the media.

When a POLITICO reporter approached the first person in line — a middle-aged woman from Michigan who arrived at 4:30 p.m. the day before — she refused to answer any questions about the former governor or say her name.

“Aren’t you on the liberals’ side?” she asked.

By 10 a.m., two hours before Palin was set to arrive, the line had swelled to at least 1,000 people and the crowd jeered at the sight of a reporter with a pen and notepad.

“Don’t you know that we’re the right-wing mob?” shouted a short, grey-haired woman who declined to state her name. “Don’t anger us, we have the numbers today and we remember your face.” The woman was cheered by a handful of those in line.

Book sales were brisk, judging from an ever-shrinking stack of copies that sat prominently at the entrance of the store. At midnight, the pile was roughly three books wide, 22 long and 10 high.

By early morning, it was cut to half its original size and Meijer’s workers routinely arrived every half-hour to replenish the stack with a grocery cart full of books.

Upon Palin’s arrival five minutes before noon, the crowd erupted into screams that quickly turned into chants for the former GOP vice presidential nominee. Palin worked the rope line for a few minutes, shaking hands and posing for a few pictures, before walking into a curtained off area to sign books.

Sitting behind a wood folding table covered by a black sheet, Palin signed a new book every 2-3 seconds, trying to quickly move through as much of the line as possible. She did not make any remarks to the crowd or assembled press.

Ray Celie of Fort Wayne, while standing in line, spoke affectionately of Palin and the emotional attachment the crowd seemed to have for her.

“Any crowd of people standing in line this long should be getting pretty irritable,” he said, “but everyone here has been really nice to each other.”

“We’re all here to support her,” he added.

After first asking whether a reporter was a Democrat or Republican, Lynn Mayer, an elderly man who drove down to the book signing with two friends from Bronson, Mich., explained his strong affinity for Palin.

“What’s good about her is she doesn’t change with the week or the month,” he said. “I’m just here to show my support.”

Having arrived after the line spanned six grocery store aisles and spilled outside into 12 lines that snaked across the parking lot, Mayer decided not to queue up and instead stood near the entrance of the store hoping to get a glimpse of Palin.

Despite his intense support for the woman who has captivated the political world over the last sixteen months, Mayer expressed doubts about the trajectory of Palin’s political career.

“She’s really taken her shots,” he said. “I don’t know if she’ll ever recover from that Katie Couric interview. That was bad.”

“I don’t even think she wants to be president,” he said. “She just wants to pay her bills, and why wouldn’t she?”

Pat Harber, a wheelchair-bound 63-year-old from Fort Wayne who arrived at the store at 10 p.m. the night before, had the 15th spot in line. Harber said she considers herself a strong Palin supporter, but noted she was really in line to get a book signed for her daughter, who could not take the morning off from work to wait for the former governor.

Harber proudly proclaimed that her daughter often gets told she looks much like Palin, despite the fact that her daughter is blond and Palin has brown hair.

“She wears the glasses and puts her hair up like Sarah does sometimes,” said Harber, with a broad smile.

Woo Hoo!! The sleeping silent giant majority has been awakened .. the media is on notice.

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's book-signing event slated for Sunday in Roanoke has not been canceled by the publisher, despite online and local media reports to the contrary.

Deanna Lemburg, Barnes & Noble regional community relations manager, said the confusion arose because of a glitch in the store's computer system. The store had rescheduled the event's start time to 10 a.m. from noon and had to take down the original posting.

A Barnes & Noble Web site had announced Palin's book signing for her new memoir, "Going Rogue: An American Life" canceled by the publisher on Tuesday night. The publisher, HarperCollins , had not changed its event announcement.

The inaccurate announcement was also reported on a Roanoke radio station and a television station Web site.

Those seeking to have their books signed on Sunday should bring in an original receipt for purchasing "Going Rogue" at a Barnes & Noble to receive a pass for the signing. Wristbands will be handed out at the store beginning at 6 a.m.

“HarperCollins has gone back to press on ‘Going Rogue,’ so the number of shipped books will be well over 1.5 million. Prepaid orders on Amazon alone are over 80,000. #1 on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.”

Palin book means record sales in Mich.

Huge lines this morning meant a record number of book sales at the Grand Rapids Barnes & Noble.

A spokeswoman for Harper Collins tells NBC News more than 1,000 copies of “Going Rogue” have been sold. The bookstore has already run out of wristbands for those standing in line since early this morning. That means the rest of those who waited in the cold will likely not get a chance to get their book signed by Sarah Palin tonight.

LOOK at that line stretching up and off to the right into the distance....!

The RINOS and the Libs have NO idea as to the magnitude of the tsunami that’s coming their way next year and in 2012.

...yeah but keep an eye on ‘em! They’re “mobsters”! ~sarc I went to the 9/12 in DC, a tax day Tea Party in Richmond and at the Bachman event in Dc 2 weeks ago. Law abiding, polite CITIZENS of the US were there too. Strange huh?

This is great, 30+ huge, enthusiastic crowds by time she gets done, have got to be giving the dems ulcers. I wonder how many will turn out when Mitt does a book signing for his new book coming out in March 2010.

Sarah Palin’s ‘Going Rogue’: A powerful testament to a good woman’s endurance in a mean world of politics

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/11/sarah-palin-going-rogue-review.html

###

Excerpt:

“Reviewing” Sarah Palin’s new book is quite an assignment. There are a lot of pages. And not many pictures. But here goes:

Despite the involvement of a professional ghostwriter, Republican ex-Gov. Sarah Palin has penned one of the most powerful pieces of personal or political literature in a generation of American books. It’s “Going Rogue: An American Life” (HarperCollins, $28.99).

Her behind-the-scenes memoir — you may have noticed a photo of the cover above — is flying off store shelves across the country even as you read this. (Now, see video below.)

It’s a 413-page masterwork of personal and political insight that makes Dick Cheney’s upcoming memoir look like a Golden Book. Based on the first 48-hours of....

... sales reports HarperCollins has already ordered additional printings. And Palin is destined to become a millionaire. Again.

With her trademark down-to-earth tone and gee-gollys, Palin takes her readers inside a compelling personal quest from her loving family’s upbringing through the....
... basketball championship, the beauty pageant, marriage to her longtime sweetheart with the strong jawline and need for speed over snow, and motherhood several times over.

But Palin says she felt there was more to life, more for her to give back to her community and country. So despite all the pressures of motherhood and wifedom, she ran for the Wasilla City Council. And won!

*snip*

Along the way Palin experienced the same kind of insidious sexism that afflicted Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries. The same kind of media intrusion into her family’s life that wouldSarah and Todd Palin never be laid upon, say, Al Gore’s speeding son with the prescription drugs in his car or those tabloid allegations about John Edwards’ infidelity.

The Associated Press assigned 11 reporters to fact-check Palin’s book, but did not bother combing through, say, Obama’s books.

But is Palin daunted? You betcha not. Indeed, “Going Rogue”.is clearly just the beginning of the national journey for this new grandmother.

The strength of her moral character and the clarity of the downhome vision she outlines for tax cuts and a smaller federal government empowering the people themselves to carve their own futures from the firm bedrock that is America paints a compelling image for Americans to follow in the next few years.

~~~~
Color me amazed.
I have not smiled about my country for a long long time. But every time I read about the turnout for Sarah’s book, when I read about the grey haired ladies calling the enemedia out for what they are, a little more hope, a little more smiling.
Sarah is going to be in my town December 1. I will take the day off work without pay and spend the night in the parking lot if I have to.
I think out of this gathering darkness, God is allowing us some light.
Thank you God. Thank you Sarah.
