I havent seen The Blind Side yet, so I wont say anything about the quality of the film. But based on the trailer and the true story, my wife and I are as excited about this as any film in a long time. It tells the true story of the adoption of Michael Oher by the Tuohy family in Tennessee and how they helped him go from homeless teenager to professional football star....Were especially excited because were big adoption advocates, currently in the middle of our first of many planned adoptions. Also, the Tuohys happen to be conservative Christians like we are, and we dont normally get to see families like that on screen, at least in movies that are watchable.
Apparently, this makes me a racist.
You see, Michael Oher happens to be black, and the Tuohys happen to be white. I actually think thats pretty cool, especially because they live in Tennessee, and what gets us farther from the evil days of segregation than an increased number of mixed-race families? One would assume that liberals especially would be excited about that, right?
Not so fast....
I did some quick research and found that my article could no longer be a prediction, as the backlash has already started. I did a search for The Blind Side, criticism, and five of the first ten items were blogs or articles about the racist undertones of the TRAILER. I saw the terms racist and paternalistic in nearly every article. In the Huffington Post, Mark Blankenship (whose bio mentions the NY Times, Variety, and Village Voice as outlets for his writingshocking) wrote The song (in the trailer) is called How to Save a Life, a title that suggests the trailers breathtaking paternalism.

I wonder if any of these bloggers would ever ask Michael Oher if he thought his experiences or the story thereof is ‘racism’?
Now how many liberal/progressive programs did this teenager fall through to end up homeless?
How did so many compassionate liberal/progressive members of society neglected to help, wouldn’t help or flat out refused to help this boy?
You know to me, that’s the real issue. Not the fake whining of OMG it’s paternalistic!
In "lib-speak" blacks are not people or humans or individuals. They are members of an "oppressed class" therefore any attempts to treat them like humans IS pure RACISM on your part!!!
This is 2009 and we can not have black folks being seen and evaluated on things like character ask Dr MLK Jr... (oops LOL)

Speaking for myself, I have washed my hands of the whole “racism” game. And the word has lost it’s sting.
I don’t care what races they combine, to make a ‘conservative’ movie. The ‘stars’ still come out during election cycles and degrade our Country, and in between, they rake in millions (Oprah,Billions), and then decry how bad our capitalistic society is, while going around the world hugging dictator tyrants, and proclaiming killing innocent infants is ‘woman’s reproductive healthcare’.
No, my money now goes to supporting candidates to oust the corrupt congress.
You don’t have to be a “liberal” or a “progressive” to help a fellow human being.
I’ve read the book. He didn’t just slip through programs... it’s as though he didn’t even exist. He had not been in school for years and his mom was a crack addict. Nobody even knew he was alive.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis is another athlete that was adopted by a white family.
“Paternalism”, ie, God’s intention for society and the family,
leads to successful, prosperous, and Godly societies and families.
Men are the leaders of their family. Now, whether they actually lead is another question, but they ARE the leaders.
If the woman tries to serve in this role, there is chaos.
Actually, a “liberal” or “progressive” is LESS LIKELY to help their fellow human being.
They’ll “care deeply” and advocate that YOU sacrifice your property and time to help their fellow human being,
but they’ll do little themselves to do so.
Only a real racist would allow a stranger who happens to be a 6’5” > 350lb black kid to stay with them...
What really disappointed me was an interview I read with Sandra Bullock. She was “amazed” at this Christian woman’s faith and love, given that she (Bullock) doesn’t believe in organized religion, or some such lib-tard garbage.
Sandra, Sandra, Sandra, couldn’t you keep your big trap shut? My favorite on-screen eye candy just dropped about 5 points in one sentence!
The reason I won’t be seeing this is Bullock. I don’t know anything about her personal beliefs, but I do think she’s one of the most overrated, annoying actresses on the screen.
I’m reading the book right now. There is nothing racist about it. Just good people that wanted to help out a homeless 16 year old. The book is wonderful.
To each their own, I guess.
Celebrities seem to be incapable of keeping their big traps shut, even if it costs them fans.
If this young waif was 300 pounds at 16 when he joined the adoptive family—I’m thinking, if nothing else, he was at least eating steady beforehand...
It sounds like a nice story, especially since true—however, I’ve seen the trailer. It sort of paints, to my mind, the familiar trope of the wise black person healing and fulfilling the pale goofballs, and clearing their emotionally constpated beings. That stuff makes me want to puke.
Also the NB writer yammering on about the evils of segregation—well, we fixed that—substituted that for the present day evils of blacks defacing the buses, loud calls of “ M******F***** “, Sharpie grafitti, beatings of whites, rape, robbery, and murder etc. (one woman friend of mine was riding in a Philly bus recently when a black guy pulled down his pants and defecated on the bus seat. He left at the next stop smiling—maybe Hollywood can make a film about that-it’s a true story)
If this kid needed help, and the family helped him and he appreciated it and made good for himself—God Bless them all—But: I have my reservations about either liberals or conservatives in the present day making a film about it that wasn’t insulting to either the young man or the family. (Or my intelligence)
I agree that it’s a good book, but I still view how he got into that prep school with a healthy dose of skepticism.
