Newt Gingrich warns of 'destructive' GOP primaries (The Rhino Strikes Back)
Politico ^ | 11/13/09 3:45 PM EST | JONATHAN MARTIN

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted disaster
for his party if the conservative wing of the GOP
continues to field independent candidates to the right
of the party’s nominee.

“If we get into a cycle where there are tea parties and
there are conservative third-party candidates, we will
make [Nancy] Pelosi speaker for life,” Gingrich told
POLITICO in an interview Thursday, calling the
practice “totally destructive.”

But Gingrich, who broke with many fellow conservatives
by getting behind the liberal Republican who was
nominated but ultimately dropped out and backed the
Democrat in a New York special congressional election,
admitted that Dede Scozzafava was too far to the left to
hold the GOP’s center-right coalition together

The once was when he engineered the takeover of the House for the first time in 40 years that the Republicans had done so while Clinton thought he could cruise his House members to victory. The Contract With America was brilliant and well done. After that it’s been all down hill for Newt.

Aren’t the primaries where we select our party’s nominee?

As far as I was aware, the primary process does not have a part nominee and this is the process we select one.

I would agree, after the primary, in the general election, conservatives then should not field a dividing candidate.

Ed for president!! The most level headed post I've seen on FR in a long time.

“And please don’t bring up NY23 - she was FAR to the left of mainstream Republicanism”

Lindsay Graham, John McCain, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Ahn Cao, Arnold Schwarzzeneggar(sp?), Gordon Smith, Rudy Guliani, Charlie Crist.

If these people represent what you call Republicanism, they can f***ing choke on it!

Newt has this fantasy that he “rehabilitates himself” by becoming more moderate and therefore more acceptable to the
D.C. elites. He was a flamethrower in his early days and the dems hated him. He seems to think he can expand his influence and possibly voting appeal by appearing moderate by doing green commericals with that pig Pelosi. He couldn’t be more wrong.

I can’t tell you how disappointing and disgusting this is to conservatives. It’s like having your wife suddenly tell you she wants to join a swingers club.

What’s the big fear, Newt? Are you afraid an avowed communist is going to get into our Whitehouse and surround himself with other avowed communists? Are you worried our entertainment, educational, civic service, etc. industries and institutions are going to be filled to the rim with subversive forces and continue to just churn out more numb numbed useful idiots resulting in the above? Oh wait, all that’s already happened, Newt. The worst case scenario is here. It’s end game time, Newt, where ya been? No more slowing this train down, we are already at the destination.

Then run the most conservative possible candidates with a chance to win in each race. Otherwise you will deservedly face your armageddon.

I was just about to say something similar. Well put.

Also, I noticed another thing in the article:

Gingrich recounted that he became speaker after the 1994 GOP sweep, thanks to a bloc of support from a moderate wing of the party that is now nearly extinct.

If the "moderate" (aka RINO/DIABLO) wing is nearly extinct, why cater to them? I think Newt forgot how to build coalitions - the GOP needs to bring the Tea Party wing into mainstream of the party, not the RINOs.

This requires the GOP to move far right at least far enough to produce candidates that are reasonably conservative... NOT for the Conservative wing to capitulate to the moderates.

With as nutty as the 'Rats have been lately, we ought to be able to pull over the independents and conservative Dems as well... if we're smart.

I'm not a star wars follower although watched the first one many moons ago with my kids, it strikes me the following could be said:

Sarah = Luke Skywalker
MAO-bama = Darth Vader
Alinsky communists & RINOs = Empire

“OK. Then what human is it ok to follow that is God?”

Don't be ridiculous, there is none.

We follow our conscience.
Following men only leads to disappointment.

Tell me why you think I should abandon my principals to
support a lesser evil over a greater one.
In the end their both evil.

Do you even understand what character is? And why you lose it when you abandon your principals?

“So what Newt is saying is that we have to give up our freedom of speech and right to protest if we want the GOP to regain power.”

Yorlik, I don’t think he said that at all. It was a pretty simple proposition - if you back a third-party candidate over the DULY NOMINATED, BY HIS PEERS, IN HIS OWN DISTRICT, candidate, you are handing Nancy Pelosi a lifetime job.

He never said we had to shut up about it - we can make as much noise as we want. IMO, the time to make is is during the primary process, though, and get a Conservative nominee.

BTW, what is a RINO, anyway? Is that a Conservative who is not 100% pure? What’s that song? “99 an’ a half won’t do - got ta have a hunnert!”

If I believe in evolution, am I a RINO? Even if I’m on board with EVERYTHING else?

And who determines these issues, anyway? You know, the tests I have to pass to be a Republican, and not a Republican In Name Only? Is there a “purity” board somewhere? And who’s on it?

Am I to become a FR pariah because I vote for the most conservative candidate - both in the primary AND the general?

And why is it OK to vote for the most conservative candidate in the primary - but NOT OK to do that in the general?

Is it because 99 and a half won’t do? Do we HAVE to have a hundred?

There are some legitimate conservatives running under the Republican banner.

But yes, many who claim to be conservative are not.

The important lesson to draw from this is that EVERY one of these “faces” they put up that are supposedly conservative are actually NOT.

They’ve been scamming us for a long time.

SOOOO true!!

Newt and the rest of the RINOs know that bad stuff is coming for them. But they seem to lack the simple ability to affect change. They seem to be blind to the emerging swing back to conservatism to the right of them!

I for one am going to thoroughly enjoy watching them get their asses kicked.

“I would agree, after the primary, in the general election, conservatives then should not field a dividing candidate.”

Only one problem with your logic.

Who do you think funded, allowed through the gate,
and backed Dede Scozzafava?

You don't think you wake up one morning and decide
to run on the Republican ticket.

No, first you have to be invited into the GOP.

So how is it that the GOP even let her in the door?
