Thanks to all those who replied. I received some very good nominations, also some names I wasn't aware of (and then there were the frivolous wastes of time).
I still think popular culture is a battlefield for conservatives. One most don't realize. So it's nice to know who is already engaged.
Here are my own choices. Tell me what you think:
OK
Here is my list of the ten greatest conservative filmmakers:
1 -Frank Capra
2- James Carabatsos (script writer as well as producer)
3- Lionel Chetwynde
4- John Ford
5-Elia Kazan
6- John Wayne
7- Clint Eastwood
8- John Milius
9- George Lucas
10- Cecil B. DeMille and Stephen Baldwin.
Here is my list of ten greatest conservative novelists:
1-W.E.B. Griffin
2-Tom Clancy
3-Dean Koontz
4-Joseph Wambaugh
5-Tim LaHaye
6-Robert Lawrence Holt
7-W.H. Mallock
8-Georges Santayana
9-Michael P. Tremoglie (I know, he's only written one novel, yet it is the uber conservative novel.Besides, his investigative journalism - for example, he exposed the NY Times spiking the ACORN/Obama collusion information they had and his commentary rates him a mention on the list. Hes also a Freeper
10-James Macomber another Freeper
Capra wasn’t all that conservative. His films were patriotic, that much is true, but when you look at Mr. Smith’s cause (a national boys’ camp) it sounds fairly big governmentish to me.
As for LaHaye, whether you like his theology or not, he was a poor novelist (even with help!). The Left Behind series was extended from seven books to twelve (or was it thirteen?) and it shows. The storyline rambles and is full of cliche cliff hangers. World War III was a couple of paragraphs long, but we have a volume devoted to a single rescue mission. In short, the first book or two were all right and the rest of the series was just lame.
Are you serious? Lucas is a FAAARRRRRR left San Francisco liberal.
Star Wars is awesome, but Lucas is an unabashed lefty.
Vince Flynn.
Clint Eastwood? “Million Dollar Baby” comes to mind and that is a pro-euthanasia film.
What’s everyone’s opinion of the Scott brothers, Tony and Riddley? One can sit through their movies without being exposed to a steady diet of f-bombs. And I think Tony’s Man On Fire with Denzel Washington has an overview/tint of Christian redemption to it.
George Lucas??????? The only thing he is Conservative about is shaving his beard.
Lucas, George W Jr
SAN RAFAEL, CA
94912 Lucasfilm Ltd/Executive $33,100 07/25/2008 P OBAMA VICTORY FUND - Democrat
LaHaye? Barely readable.
Stephen Baldwin? As in Biodome and Half Baked Stephen Baldwin?
Star Wars is awesome?............NOT. It’s a fairy tale done up in sci-fi garb...........
I don’t get why Ford and Capra are there. For making conservative movies or for being conservatives in life? John Ford tormented Stewart and Wayne for their politics. Ford could be a cranky old jerk and did someone outrageously rude things to Stewart because he didn’t like Stewart’s politics. As an aside, if I remember right, I read that John Ford and John Wayne were big time boozers and did some pretty wild stuff...some of it pretty funny.
Where is Ayn Rand?
Obama’s using the storyline as a template to take over the USA.
The National Boys Camp was the opposite of big government. It was self-help.
I like SF.
Among living authors these are the most conservative and probably some of the best:
David Weber
John Ringo
Travis Taylor
Tom Kratman
Among dead SF authors, I like Heinlein, and H. Beam Piper.
George Lucas? Um, no. Big lefty.
#1 Ayn Rand
No one else even close and if things don’t change soon (2010, 2012) we’re all going to be looking for John Galt.
David Zucker, the guy who did the movie ‘Airplane!’ is a conservative. And pretty funny too.
Then he must be using Blazing Saddles as his script.................
I’m a big Military Science Fiction fan, and there are a number of very good conservative authors. My quick list:
1. John Ringo
2. David Weber
3. Jerry Pournelle
4. Larry Niven
5. Robert Heinlein
6. Travis Taylor
7. Jack Campbell
8. Douglas Ian
9. Eric Flint
10. John G. Hemry
Thanks Miami Vice for the plug of my novel “A Sense of Duty.” It was critically acclaimed albeit a commercial failure ( although maybe failure is too strong a word. I sold about 1000 copies without a single dime spent on marketing or public relations. Just word of mouth.)
Anyhow I’m working on a sequel.
As far as Capra is concerned the Boys Camp funds were to help the needy and to be repaid by them with the money they earned.
There is nothing “unconservative” about helping those who CAN’T help themselves and it is very conservative to repay a debt.
One author you missed is Johnston McCulley. He is the author of Zorro, who leads a revolt against an oppressive government that taxes the citizens and uses the money for their own benefit.
Geez sounds just like the Democrats doesn’t it?
The best American novelist AND the top conservative novelist is Tom Wolfe. (Man in Full, I Am Charlotte Simmons, etc.)
