Homeward Bound (H-1B Visas/ Indians)
WSJ ^ | Nov. 9, 2009 | MONA SARIKA

Sudhir Kapoor, 25, got the call from his employer late last year. It was bad news: The economic downturn meant the technology company had to let him go.

Laxmi Aiyar, who is returning to India after she was laid off by her company, says, "It is Indian talents who made America rich and prosperous. Now, they are throwing us out like a can of Pepsi."

Since nearly 40 percent of all H-1B visa holders are from India , the mounting layoffs are hitting Indian professionals particularly hard.

....Lives have been disrupted, and some said they were under tremendous stress to pay back mortgage loans for buying houses and cars. Many had children born on U.S. soil and wonder how their children will adjust to Indian schools and a different way of life.

H-1s have been reluctant to publicize their plight, for two reasons: They fear that most Americans are unsympathetic to their predicament, and many do not want their family and friends in India to know that their American dream didn't quite work out.

If someone has worked abroad for more than seven years, they are often found unfit to work in "resurgent India ." And managers have to tread carefully between paying them more than "locals."

"What America 's basically saying is, 'We've educated you, we've trained you, we've taught you all about our markets,'" says Vivek Wadhwa, a successful Indian-born tech entrepreneur turned Duke University professor. "'Now you have to get the hell out of here. "

"Our generation has benefited because America has welcomed us and we have learned so much here," said Himanshu Khare, a software professional in Boston on a H1B visa, but thinking of going back to India.

"What's that old saying: don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out... Sob story about Indian H-1B visa holders being forced to return to India. But it do es show that more exposure of the H-1B program is causing it to be tightened up."

About this line: "It is Indian talents who made America rich and prosperous. Now, they are throwing us out like a can of Pepsi.""

Well, honey, get in line, because the Mexicans claim the same thing! Funny how NONE of you came until this country WAS prosperous!

And don't believe for a minute that these visas aren't getting used...the government has a visa for every imagined purpose they hand out by the millions...AND most visa foreigners just overstay and never leave.

Spot on, where were all these economic immigrants when the heavy lifting was done? Go back to your sari country lady, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

“It is Indian talents who made America rich and prosperous. Now, they are throwing us out like a can of Pepsi.”

I remember reading about how the people of India strove against all odds to tame the frontier, build our highway systems, instruct our armies and...gosh, if they did all that, why is India a shithole?

The H-1B visa is by definition temporary. At one point or another a holder of such a visa would be expected to leave the country.

The subject of this article really has no basis to complain.

While that statement might contain a bit of hyperbole, go sit in any engineering classroom at any college and you'll see the desks occupied by Indians, Asians and Middle Easterners. American students just aren't stepping up to the plate.

What a load of bs. She is not the reason America suceeds. We are the reason she suceeded; that is if she really did.

Well boo-frickin-hoo.

Look lady, I’m a 4th-generation born-in-the-USA citizen with 20 years in IT, and I just got canned too. So don’t cry to me about losing your H-1B job.

Amazing isn’t it? Same reason Mexico is....but then why should they improve their country when they can come here and be paid to destroy ours by turning it into a 3rd world international transit welfare state.

As old Cleetus here says on FR - “Don’t let the door hit ya, where the Good Lord split ya.”

Now if they can take the Muslims, Brazilians, Mexicans and other illegals stealing jobs from Americans with them it would be great.

I will take (hindu) Indians over Muslims any day. I love the “we built America...”

Yeah right - with sh**ty software code that is like spaghetti. I know Americans who have had to fix their crappy code.

Aren't you saying that all of the technology invented and all the hard work that has made American the world leader it is is because of Indian students sitting at desks now?

Sheesh, talk about hyperbole.

As an engineer, I have worked with dozens of Indians over the years. The ones that make it over here are very sharp individuals and damn good engineers. But one problem with them is that they seldom stay in one job for more then a year or two. I, and several of my coworkers, have been layed off over the last year but none of the Indians have been. I wish that here in America we would employ Americans before we employ foreigners.

“The H-1B visa is by definition temporary. At one point or another a holder of such a visa would be expected to leave the country.”

Evidently, not by THEIR definition! Instead they buy houses...(subprime, etc)...something we should allow no foreign national to do! Then they drop anchor babies, who are
US citizens...another crazy notion!

These H1Bs were bound to be 'thrown away' - thats the risk they took.

But I'm sympathetic to their plight. Its the corporations who saw a quick way to easy profits I'm more upset with, and the bought politicians who wrote the laws.

Instead of convenient shortcuts maybe now we'll begin investing in our own people.

It’s ALWAYS about greed...from the corporate owned politico to the guy being smuggled across the border.

I think the H1Bs are only good for 6 years, and they know that going in. If they wanted to set down roots, it wasn’t the way to go. The Indians I worked with were permanent residents or citizens. Ironically, our company mainly brought key people from Ireland on H1Bs.....
