She Ran to Gunfire, and Ended It
NYT ^ | November 6, 2009 | JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr.

Posted on 11/07/2009 4:39:03 AM PST by Daffynition

KILLEEN, Tex. — The police officer who brought down a gunman after he went on a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army base here was on the way to have her car repaired when she responded to a police radio report of gunfire at a center where soldiers are processed before being sent overseas, the authorities said Friday.

As she pulled up to the center, the officer, Sgt. Kimberly Denise Munley, spotted the gunman, later identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, brandishing a pistol and chasing a wounded soldier outside the building, said Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at the base.

Sergeant Munley — a woman with a fierce love of hunting, surfing and other outdoor sports — bolted from her car, yanked her pistol out and shot at Major Hasan. He turned on her and began to fire. She ran toward him, continuing to fire, and both she and Major Hasan went down with several bullet wounds, Mr. Medley said.

Whether Sergeant Munley was solely responsible for taking down Major Hasan or whether he was also hit by gunfire from her partner is unclear, but she was the first to fire at him, the authorities said.

Sergeant Munley, 34, is an expert in firearms and a member of the SWAT team for the civilian police department on the base, officials said.

Mr. Medley said she had received specific training in a tactic called active shooter protocol, which was intended for this kind of situation.

“She’s absolutely a hero,” he said. “She had the training; she knew what to do. And she had the courage to do it — by doing it she saved countless people’s lives.”

The original 911 call came in at 1:23 p.m., and five minutes later Sergeant Munley had already shot ...

Nice to see the NYT gets it right once in a while.

Kudos to Sgt. Kimberly Denise Munley.

Anyone know why it took well over 5 minutes for someone to shoot at the terrorist, on the largest Army base in the world? And then to be stopped by an off duty female civilian?

I’m surprised the Slimes covered this aspect of the massacre. I’m surprised they are implying that Munley is a hero. After all, she (and maybe also her partner) shot a MUSLIM. And that’s the most coveted of politically correct groups in the WORLD.

I wonder if the writer will keep his job.

Generally, there are not loaded weapons on base except for those of the guards who are normally at the gates.

Not just a ROP member but one with mental problems and pre-post traumatic stress disorder. She should have said Allahu Akbar to distract him then sit down and pray with him until trained politically correct forces could study the situation in a sensitive and nuanced manner.

One would think that an Army base would have firearms all over the place but I can tell you from my time in the Army that this is not so. The MPs are the only ones that are armed on post. The only times a civilian is armed on post is when they are part of a civilian police force augmenting the MPs. I had my own personal sidearm stored in the arms room when living in the barracks. When my units went to qualify at the range we signed out our weapons from the arms room but were not issued any ammo until we were at the range. The only time I ever carried a loaded weapon was during Desert Storm.

Perhaps you aren't familiar with these Military installations, their make-up and purpose.

Unlike a "Fort" or Camp being used as an operational base in a war zone or nearby areas for staging, these posts are small cities for troops and their families to train and live normal lives.

While there is security at the perimeter, the fort itself is housing, schools, stores, classrooms, hospitals and more remote trainig areas.

It hasn't been necessary to be under-arms except in paymaster duties and similar functions liable to interferance.

Like most of use, when our military is not deployed, it doesn't "carry" as a matter of course when at the classroom, takinng the kids to ball practice or filling out paperwork at the "main office".

Consider that as a ‘group’ the M World was ‘looking’ for S. Rasheed (sp) for writing a book, condemned a newspaper and cartoonist for a cartoon etc...
Makes it easier to find if the ‘reports’ list the names and addresses of the people involved (only on the good guy side) by the way, the perps etal have rights, the law abiding apparently not when it comes to privacy...

We sure made a wrong turn somewhere on this journey....

I wouldn’t doubt it. Like I said, I’m VERY skeptical that ANYONE in the Slimes, including the Faux “Conservative” David Brooks, thinks that shooting a homicidal muzzie is a good thing.

Maybe she should change her “intended homes” to something the Slimes didn’t “report” on.

Does anyone know what sort of weapon was used by Maj. Hasan? Also, how did he get it onto the base? If it was there to begin with, did he have to sign it out, as you had to do? When signing a weapon out, is it checked by whomever to see if it is loaded or not? Maybe these sort of rules don’t apply to an officer versus an enlisted man? I just don’t know myself. Any thoughts on your part?

When ever I signed out my issued weapon or my own personal sidearm, it was never issued loaded. No problem to get it on base though as he could have easily had them in his personal vehicle or on his person. Officers have to keep their weapons in the same arms room everyone else does if they live in the barracks or officer quarters. Or least at the posts I served (Ft. Sill, Ft. Bliss, Camp Colbern (ROK)). I know that Maj. Hasan *spit*, used pistols. What kind or caliber, I do not know. Probably Baretta 92s. The reason I say Baretta 92s is because unless he was a frequent shooter, those are the pistols he would be most familiar with due to his military training and qualification.

Most places are reporting 3 minutes not 5 to kill the terrorist. Where do you get the off duty? I still can't find that one. This story has different data and no wonder seeing the source. The next day there were over 20 MP to arrest the terrorists buddy. I don't know where you live razzle but what is the response time of cops in your neighborhood? It is 30 minutes for me if I am lucky. Colt does my security.

I cannot say how much I admire this lady. She jumped forward in the face of possible death and rendered the shooter incapable of continuing his actions.

I hope the various law enforcement associations recognize her with their highest awards for bravery.

I would expect der leader to do so too but he and Holder will be debating why she did not tell him to stop and read him his rights before shooting him.

I only wish she had a 12 gauge rather than the 9mm.

Early reports were over 5 minutes, later it was 4 minutes, now it is under 3 minutes, pretty soon this woman will be flying to the rescue. Remember Jessica Lynch the hero from the Army, that story sold lots of newspapers.

I also read somewhere that the female cop was taking her car to the repair shop and returned to the base to kill the bad guy.

I also have a S&W, Mossberg and Rock River AR for my security.

Seems to me that the car getting fixed was her State Police car not her personal car as the nyt seems to hint. She would have been on duty. Most cops take their squad car home with them so they are on duty 24/7 or at least here they do. There is Cop 500 yards form my house most of the time.

I was stationed on a SAC base. The Security Police had rifles to guard the base gates and the flight line. Otherwise, if you wanted to fire a weapon, you went to the range.

We had enough live nukes to blow up the whole f**king world, though, so we weren't completely unarmed.
