Newark officials announce gun buyback program

Officials in New Jersey's largest city are offering cash to get guns off the city's streets.

Mayor Cory Booker on Tuesday announced a gun buyback and amnesty program to begin next month.

Anyone turning in a gun at one of five city churches will receive $200. The participating churches are Emanuel Christian, First Trinity Baptist, Paradise Baptist, IBC Calvary Baptist and Independent Church of God. The first buyback dates are Nov. 11 and 12 at Emanuel Christian Church.

Newark's homicide rate had fallen steeply in recent years but has crept up this year. Since the beginning of the year there have been 58 homicides compared to 53 in the same period last year. The overall number of shootings has decreased, however

I always wondered if decreases in murder rates in major cities have to do with them running out of criminals as they are gunned down?

These gun buybacks are always laughable.

Does anyone know how many handguns and long guns are manufactured annually in the USA? It would be interesting to compare the numbers of guns “repurchased” in Newark with the number of guns produced during the same period.

Did the city of Newark sell the guns? If they didn’t it isn’t a buyBACK program.

One can not buy back what one never owned to begin with.

You can consistently purchase a Raven or Lorcin .25 for about $50. Sounds like a quick opportunity to make a $150 profit.

And BTW..."buyback"? Just how are they buying the guns "back"?

Sort of how we are expected to give "back" to the community even though we never took anything from it.

While there’s a small chance that there will be a few quality guns turned in, the vast majority will probably be junk.

Back room barrel full of rusted and crap guns looks good for $10,000 under this new liberal plan. And that is exactly what they’ll get for their money, unless of course someone needs amnesty on a murder weapon.

Didn’t some City do this a few years back and then the bought back guns, that were supposedly destroyed, end up back on the streets. With no report of a theft from the Police Evidence Room.

“Back room barrel full of rusted and crap guns looks good for $10,000 under this new liberal plan. And that is exactly what they’ll get for their money, unless of course someone needs amnesty on a murder weapon.”

Exactly. Little Davis Industries Derringer costs $60, a last ditch gun to begin with. Anyone would gladly sell one to you for $200. And the broken old H&R revolver that one stole from his auntie, he’ll take $200 for that one too, ‘specially since he fired it at the clerk in that liquor store he robbed last week...’specially if she dies...

Instead, these city goodiders think crime is going to go away when they buy up junk guns. Unbelievable. No evidence of this ever benefitting anyone but the ones that take the money.

A lot of cities have done this. The good guys turn in their guns and the criminals don’t. It’s a zero sum game. Touchy feely for the politicians and nothing ever gets done.

I know a lot of cities have done it. But one sticks in my brain ans the buy-backs ending up on the street again in a murder investigation. I think it was in the north/northeast but can remember for sure.

While I`m not suggesting anyone do this, does that include zip guns? So whats the cost of one and a half feet of water pipe, some hardware and a small piece of 2x4? If so,do the sheeple know that their tax dollars are funding the weapons upgrading of punks and thug wanna be`s?

I’m sure they’ve been told, but they never heard.

I don’t know about the zip guns, LOL.
