*break*
...This year's election for governor will have consequences -- for the next four years. Voters face a heightened civic responsibility to elect a gifted leader who is also an able manager.
The commonwealth is fortunate that two thoroughly decent, knowledgeable men are seeking its highest office this year. Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell have long records of admirable public service. We believe that each possesses the integrity and experience required to be governor of Virginia, one of the most powerful executive offices in the country. Both candidates, for example, seem to understand that the state's difficulties with information technology partner Northrop Grumman will not improve until the unwieldy governance and oversight structure is repaired -- with responsibility ultimately resting with the commonwealth's top elected official.
The troubles facing our next governor are almost enough to make one question why anybody would want the job. The answer is, of course, simple: Difficult times require superb leaders. We believe Bob McDonnell has demonstrated the temperament, talent, and solid philosophy needed to guide the Old Dominion to a more prosperous future and to ensure that even the most vulnerable citizens benefit from the revival. He has earned our endorsement, through his deeds and his platform.
McDonnell's insistence that taxes not be raised on Virginia's citizens and businesses represents not only a sound and pragmatic policy decision -- it also demonstrates one of his fundamental beliefs about the relationship between the government and the governed. In an era when government at many levels seems out of control -- prone to bouts of fiscal immaturity -- McDonnell understands that an effective, compassionate public sector is always defined by limited government. And he knows that those who earn paychecks and profits have first claim on those earnings. The tax collector must play a secondary role.

Its get out the vote time.
Virginia pingage-worthy?
Heard the commercial Obama put out for Deeds where all he talks about is himself...I couldn’t believe it, Obama and Michelle did the same thing to promote Chicago’s effort getting the Olympic games.
Any reason why those sites you posted didn’;t come out as links ?

They’re not links on your screen? They’re links on mine. I’ll try again.

The Obama’s self-promotion didn’t work for Chicago Olympics and it’s not working for Deeds, either. It’s working for the Virginia GOP. Plus, like the Editorial says, McDonnell is a stellar candidate.
“Heard the commercial Obama put out for Deeds where all he talks about is himself...”
...the end of that commercial features a still shot of a smug and arrogant Deeds looking down his nose ala Obama/Mussolini. That little creep won’t win jacksh*&. McDonnell got the endorsement of Fairfax County CofC and Hampton Roads CofC. Both HUGE pinko hang outs. Bob leads by 14 points and we’re now waiting for the made-up and inevitable “macaca” moment from the Wash Compost.
There will be no “Macaca” moment this time. Virginians got stuck with Jim Webb because the easily influenced flock fell for the WAPO’s red herring. It will not happen again. BTW Jim, your turn is coming in 2012. I hope you enjoyed your one term in office.
No macaca moment. And the Washington Post has tried so hard to make it happen.
Republicans see an opportunity to grab more seats in Virginia House
By Amy Gardner
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, October 25, 2009
For much of this decade, Virginia Democrats have wondered every two years not whether they would increase their numbers in the House of Delegates but by how many seats.
Many Democrats hoped this could be the year that they finally won the six seats they need to take over the body, but amid a struggling economy, concern over federal policies and a governor’s race in which Republican Robert F. McDonnell is favored to win, it is the GOP that now sees a chance to strengthen its numbers.
All 100 seats in the House of Delegates are up for election this year. And although most eyes are on McDonnell’s battle against Democrat R. Creigh Deeds, the stakes are enormous in the battle for control of the House, where lawmakers will determine what solution, if any, emerges to solve Virginia’s expanding transportation crisis.

Deeds seeks to shore up Hispanic vote

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds sought to rally Latina voters on Saturday as his campaign gears up for the final sprint to the Nov. 3 election.
Deeds’ campaign organized a handful of events across the state billed as opportunities for Latinas to rally support for the Democratic candidate. Anne Holton, First Lady of Virginia, was among the volunteers cheering on campaign workers at Caribbean Breeze restaurant in Arlington Saturday morning.
The differences between Deeds and his opponent, Republican Bob McDonnell, “could not be more stark,” Holton told a group of supporters in Arlington.
“There’s nothing [done] about this election yet,” she said. “Work, work, work - 10 days!”

Vote McDonnell (Fredericksburg Star)
McDonnell for governor
Date published: 10/25/2009
THE 2009 Virginia governor’s race has been dismal. Judging from Democrat Creigh Deeds’ ads, if Bob McDonnell is elected the savvy will invest in burqas. Pick me, Mr. Deeds pleas, because my opponent is so horrible. Mr. McDonnell, meanwhile, has penciled some changes into the worn menu of half-baked GOP ideas on transportation and called them haute cuisine. Bill Howell and Tim Kaine offered a similarly exotic hodgepodge; it fell right off the fork. Once again, to quote Irving Berlin, we say it’s spinach and to hell with it.
Hearing nothing inspiring from either hopeful, the citizen must assay personal attributes. So:
Mr. McDonnell, the former attorney general and legislator, has worked harder. He has devised a detailed plan for everything short of setting out your azaleas and flossing. State Sen. Deeds has produced no such library and, on the main issue, mobility, aims to convene a bipartisan commission. For success, he would need a bipartisan legislature. He wouldn’t have it, especially after his mucky campaign.
Mr. McDonnell is articulate, certainly a virtue in leadership (recall George W. Bush’s chronic incoherence and its incurred cost in popular support). Mr. Deeds is not a confident speaker, giving the impression that he is confused by complexity or fears candor.
Also, Mr. McDonnell is more positive. He has run his share of absurd attack ads, but, unlike his rival, hasn’t made vilification a campaign theme.
Executive capacity? Mr. McDonnell not only proficiently ran the A.G.’s office, but also, after serving four years on active duty, retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. Mr. Deeds lacks this command pedigree.

McDonnell gets the nod
By The News Virginian Staff (Waynesboro)
Published: October 25, 2009
An unfortunate son, either of Philadelphia or Richmond, will stride into Timothy M. Kaines shortening shadow in January and perhaps thereafter wonder who won in November. Rumblings emanating from the capital, previously and painfully accurate, are that Virginia will begin the year staring across a budget canyon of $3 billion. Hell to the chief.
For the past four months, since the June 9 Democratic primary, the campaign for governor has been focused on two veteran state political players, Robert F. McDonnell and R. Creigh Deeds. That fact appears to have been lost on the latter. The state senator from Bath County has lobbied for the top job with the stuperous ardor and predictable inefficacy of a drunken brawler. And still we ponder a question, why Mr. Deeds?
His answer is that McDonnell, the Republican who bested Deeds in 2005 for attorney general, wrote a thesis 20 years ago opining on the ills of working women, homosexuals and contraceptives. McDonnells answer to this is that hes hired plenty of women and been supportive of his daughter, a platoon leader in Iraq. His views, he says, have changed on some issues, meaning, principally, hes softened rather than altered. And McDonnells base says amen.

Editorial: Creigh Deeds for governor
The longtime senator is the candidate for governor who is serious about the most pressing issue facing Virginia: transportation. [!?!?]
If the campaign to become Virginia’s next governor is about which candidate is more articulate and slick, then Republican Bob McDonnell is the clear choice.
If the campaign is about who would better govern the state and face the extremely difficult choices the commonwealth must confront, then Democrat Creigh Deeds becomes the frontrunner. He is better prepared to position Virginia to meet the challenges of the future.

Bristol Herald Courier endorses Bob McDonnell for Virginia governor
By Bristol Herald Courier Editorial Board
Published: October 25, 2009
Virginia has two chief problems higher than acceptable unemployment and transportation needs across the commonwealth. We believe Republican Robert F. McDonnell has outlined the most robust plans to address both as governor of Virginia. McDonnells transportation plan includes 12 measures from privatizing ABC stores to adding tolls to issuing bonds with the money going directly to transportation.
Democrat R. Creigh Deeds proposes a bipartisan commission to study the problems, if he is elected. Its an inclusive step, but one that seems slow in a state with enormous and mounting transportation needs.
Everything McDonnell is pitching might not work, but he has done more to offer specific solutions during this race. We also like McDonnells jobs plan and his understanding that rural parts of Virginia need special attention to draw new business.
As a native of Northern Virginia who later lived in and represented Virginia Beach in the House of Delegates, McDonnell understands the business needs of Virginias larger cities. He has been endorsed by every major business organization in the state, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Federation for Independent Business and the Virginia Realtors.
But what about Southside and Southwest Virginia, regions that are more geographically isolated and have historically lagged behind the more populous and prosperous areas? During an editorial board meeting Thursday, McDonnell said he would appoint a full-time deputy secretary of commerce and trade to address business needs, that he or his lieutenant governor would visit those regions and others like them every 30 days, and that those regions would be given preferential treatment for state contracting.
All of those efforts are needed to give those regions an economic boost.
Obama/Mussolini...Fair compairison ...Mussolini while a dictator had to answer to a junta composed of colonels heading the Fascista Party. After it became clear Italy was losing the war Benito was deposed and replaced by King Victor Emmanuale II. Mussolini was evenutally captured and hung with his girlfriend upside down on a street light pole by “partisans” who were probably communists inspired no doubt by Russia for Italy’s sizeable contribution and losses on the “Eastern front” which few realize happened.
The Fascist name and symbol comes from the fasces, a mace symbolizing the authority of the Roman Republic Senate consisting of ebony sticks bound to an axe handle and carried into a legislative chamber prior to a session..Even ours (not sure if they still do this) ! and was on the back of old US dimes...
Besides TV is the GOP using any print material ?
14 major newspapers in the state have now endorsed McDonnell.
>14 major newspapers in the state have now endorsed McDonnell.<
Yes, but the Roanoke Times has endorsed Creigh Deeds, so all of the other newspapers are misguided.
(Ducking and running for the hills)
Besides TV is the GOP using any print material ?
...very little actually. Boring message too, “Jobs”. He had me scared he’d go down with this but it’s working. Or at least BO’s unpopularity coupled with Deeds idiocy is working. Either way, McDonnell carries himself as very dignified, confidant and presidential really. Deeds comes off as a slob.
Amazing! That may be a first.
The Roanoke Times is having a Democrat love-in. They are desperate to see their party do something.
Such liberal advocacy should result in lots of subscription cancellations. The last WP I purchased was at the turn of the century.
