For a show that prides itself on its knowledge of news and history, Hardball with Chris Matthews made some embarrassing errors last night, including the fact that Ron Reagan Jr. apparently doesn't understand the Bush Doctrine. Chris and Ron, his guest "expert" on Afghanistan, came up with two historical inaccuracies within minutes of one another. When conservative guest Frank Gaffney said he hoped Afghanistan could be pacified, as Germany was after World War II, Matthews snapped:
Matthews: There were no American soldiers killed after V-E Day, and you know it. Stop bringing up. Stop.
Gaffney: There were people killed after V-E Day, as a matter of fact....
Matthews: Not in Europe...Not in Germany.
Gaffney: Yes, indeed, there were....
Matthews: When did this happen?
Gaffney: We had all kinds of operations that were going on by revanchist groups that were still trying to kill Americans and others.
Matthews: I'll have to go and check this. There was no activity after '45.
Gaffney: There certainly were activities.
Well, Chris, the group Gaffney referenced was called the Werewolves. Professor Perry Biddiscombe of the University of Victoria has described their campaign of bombings, snipings, and terrorism lasting from the collapse of the Third Reich "until at least 1947." The History Channel even did a special on them called Nazi Guerrillas. I hope that helps. Thanks; Frank and I look forward to your on-air retraction tonight.
Now, for Ron Reagan.

great item. I saw this exchange and was flabbergasted as to how wrong both Matthews and Reagan were [wow that just reads wrong].
Chrisy and the sissy make Blitzed seem intelligent.
“For a show that prides itself on its knowledge of news and history, Hardball with Chris Matthews made some embarrassing errors last night, including the fact that Ron Reagan Jr. apparently doesnt understand the Bush Doctrine.”
that makes two of us...unless he means pre-emption, but as far as I know, the “Bush Doctrine” was a leftist assignation for whatever went wrong they could snipe at...his policies changed as the war unfolded, so there is no one single doctrine...
President Reagan was a great president, but horrible father.
To Chrissy and Ron-Ron - Open mouth, insert foot, chew vigoriously and enjoy filet of sole.
I didn’t there was a Bush doctrine. Hey, MSM would you please make one up soon so we will know for sure.
We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.
For all the confusion over what constitutes “The Bush Doctrine,” this is the best definition I can think of. I know Charlie Gibson thinks it means “preemption,” and it may well involve preemption, I guess. But of course, in the case of Afghanistan, we fought them because they were harboring the group that attacked us.
In the case of Iraq, fears of future attacks were invoked as justification. However, we also based it on Iraq having violated the treaty settling their invasion of Kuwait way back when, so it, too, was not strictly a case of preemption.
Part of that episode focused on it.
“Hardball with Chris Matthews made some embarrassing errors last night,”
Hardball IS an embarrassment.
By all accounts, Ronald Reagan (the president) was aloof, not only as a father but in all his personal relationships. Only Nancy Reagan ever broke through totally. Withdrawal is a typical coping mechanism for the children of alcoholics.
If there weren't enough reasons to tune out MSNBC already they've brought back Mr. “expert on everything” including conservatives & Afghanistan, Ron Reagan.
Michael turned out just fine. Maybe Nancy was a bad mother
Ron doesn’t know wher his next boyfriend is coming from........
Ron-Ron knows nothing about bush - period.
Oooh ooh! I have some questions
Question 1: What is the Obama Doctrine?
Question 2: What is Marxism?
Didn’t Junior have a hit cover song in the 1980s “Don’t mess with my tutu?”
“Question 1: What is the Obama Doctrine?”
hopium
