Calls for nuclear weapons in South Korea

With the U.S. defense chief in Seoul for security talks, a group of scholars and retired military officials have called for a redeployment of tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea to counter North Korea's nuclear drive. They also urged the United States to delay the planned transfer of wartime control of South Korean troops to Seoul beyond 2012, citing lingering threats from the North.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Seoul Wednesday for the annual Security Consultative Meeting, which is focused on steps to deter military threats from North Korea.

Gates and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-young were expected to use Thursday's security meeting to deliver a "grave warning" against the North's provocative behaviors, Seoul's defense officials said. North Korea conducted a second nuclear test in May following the test-launch of a long-range missile.

South Korea has no faith in BamBam. They don’t think BamBam will protect them if the North attacks. They will do what they have to do.

This is a fraud. The US really wants to move nukes to s.korea to counter china and also because we are soon to be moving out of japan.

I’m sure China will have nothing to say about that.

What is this about the US moving out of Japan? I haven’t heard anything about that. I know they are talking about consolidating some of the bases and overlapping functions, but I didn’t know anyone was talking about abandoning Japan.

Gates and Japanese came to a head about U.S. airbase in Okinawa. Japanese gov wants the base out of Okinawa, and Gates said, "We won't move the base out of there."

I don't quite remember where the base is supposed to go if it relocates. Still in Japan or out of the country altogether.

It was reportedly a testy exchange, because the current gov wants to scrap the pact Japan signed under previous LDP govs.

Thanks. I think Japan and South Korea, with a couple nukes, would shut kimmie up for good.

Japan wants US military gone. I think they are in the arguing phase still, and havn’t officially made up their minds yet. I read it here on FR somewhere.

Seems like I also read japan is mulling the idea of changing their constitution so that their military won’t be as restricted as it currently is.

Yes, yes, and no.

Obama would not fight for South Korea. South Korea is aware of this.

South Korea wouldn't fight for South Korea either.

The moral cowardice of the civilized world is entirely general.
