6.1 is pretty bad for a banana republic. The infrastructure is not as good as some of the more affluent countries. There are a good many US retirees there.

Off the coast in the Pacific. I wonder how that will add in with the Hurricane to the north.

Gee, Huricane Rick sure disappeared in a hurry, 3 days. It was projected to make landfall as Class 1 or 2, but looks like it is now less than 30mph winds.

Thanks for the map....looking at the red fault line, I noticed that “squares” were made...from the big red 6.1 to the earlier smaller one in yellow. Just looks strange that the cracks in the earth would be at right angles.
To: maine-iac7
As a EQ watcher I noticed that too.
Been having more activity up off the coast of the PNW.
Lotta lil pressure releases.

Looks close to the southern border of Costa Rica.
Just to the left of the word "San Jose" along the north edge of the map is the
Nicoya peninsula, a fascinating seismic area near volcanoes, a huge undersea landslide, and the interface of a subduction zone between crustal plates.
The area from Nicaragua to Panama along the Pacific is very active both volcanically and seismically.

driving in panama city at the time of this I didn’t feel it, but not sure if felt in the city or not. I most certainly felt the 6.x quake north of colon this summer, worst shaking I have ever felt here.

I am kinda ignorant about such things, but let me ask anyway. The recent eq’s in the pacific seem to have triggered others. Is there anyway to know if more can be expected anytime soon further up the coast of CA? Please tell me no. lol

It certainly seems as though the plates, they are moving. If you look at the vast area from Samoa to Indonesia, things are still shaking. If your interest is mostly in the US, look at Southern and Central California for very small quakes, 1.0 to 2.5, along the transverse fault area. Kind of spooky.

Actually, it is very likely that cracks form at right angles because mathematically, that is the most efficient way of intercepting the stress raiser in an advancing crack. (at least by Dugdale, Griffith, and Rice’s crack theories.)
Whenever a homogeneous and brittle material cracks, there is a zone of increased stress preceding the tip of the crack. (That’s consistent with why things crack continually in one direction along a shear plane.) When the tip of an advancing crack intercepts another crack at less than 90 degrees, there is some tendency for the crack to continue to travel. When it hits a 90 degree intercepting crack, there is a chance the advancing crack will halt and no longer present a dynamic cracking mechanism.
The other way is for the crack to intercept a surface such as a hole or circular crack. That is one reason Navy sailors drill holes in steel and ram cones into them to stop a sheet metal crack in a bulkhead.

World Plates
That map shows all existing seismic plates.
As you can see, the plates at work in Panama/Costa Rica (Cocos/Nazca/Caribbean) are not the same ones affecting California (Pacific/Juan de Fuca/North American.)
Aside from that, there are hundreds of quakes of all sizes worldwide, and how (or if) they interact no one knows, that I am aware.
Here is the place to check all earthquakes worldwide:
World Earthquakes
On that page are regional maps with more details.
Good luck!
