Tea Party insurgency marches into key states
Christian Science Monitor ^ | October 17, 2009 | Patrik Jonsson

<snip>

The growing numbers of Americans coming out to the Tax Day Tea Party, the Fourth of July Tea Parties, and then the 9/12 Tea Party march on Washington are going back to their home districts and keeping up — even intensifying — the fight for smaller government and more transparency on spending and taxation.

In places like New York, Florida, California, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, local, state, congressional, and gubernatorial seats are suddenly being tugged to-and-fro by the new and unruly political force.

The upshot?

The street energy is welcome for an otherwise moribund Republican party looking for new moorings amid a tumultuous electorate.

The downside is that early examples shows that, in the short run, Tea Party-sponsored candidates could make it more difficult for Republicans as they — Ross Perot-like — split races as they target both “tax and spend” Democrats and those they like to call RINOs, or “Republicans-in-name-only.”

“In the Republican primaries, especially, the Tea Party movement could be a very significant force” — and not always in the Republicans’ favor — says Charles Franklin, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison.

In New York’s 23rd congressional district, Democrats may ultimately thank Tea Party conservatives for backing businessman Doug Hoffman, a Conservative Party candidate, in a three-way congressional race in November — the sole national race this year.

Mr. Hoffman’s supporters have pulled voters away from the Republican moderate, Dede Scozzafava, leaving the Democrat, Bill Hoffman, with the lead, according to polls. The “NY-23” battle, as it’s called, is already causing rifts in the Republican party, with Tea Party activists booing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for backing Scozzafava.

This New York 23rd district race will be an opportunity for the TEA party movement, and other grass roots conservative activists. The question is, can conservative activist actually deliver a victory for an independent conservative candidate. If we can push Hoffman over the finish line, then the Republican party will have to start taking conservatives more seriously. If Hoffman puts a Democrat in the seat, the Republican “leaders” will try to blame the loss on the TEA party groups and conservatives.

In my opinion, we all need to step up for Hoffman. Please, send Hoffman a donation. I wish we would get behind him as strongly as we got behind Joe Wilson last month.

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” democRat.

There are also 17 RINOs in the house who have donated funds to this Liberal democRat's campaign. They include Boehner and Cantor. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These RINOs should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year.

Bump! It appears that this race is an important battleground to determine who controls the GOP.

I'd like to hear what the unprincipled clown Newt Gingrich will have to say when Scozzafava switches to the Democratic Party:

Conservatives have to support Doug Hoffman in this. We have to get the man over the finish line. It’s not only the necessity of Conservative representation in our government, but the message to the RNC as well.

Conservatives mean business. If the RNC wants to “reach out”, then reach out to Conservatives.

I cannot stand the stinking RINOs/ I think I am starting to understand. One semi-loon who used to post here was a Dem lawyer who almost ran for state sen as a Dem in his state. He said the name of the game is you back the person to run then get elected and you (Democrat Party) have the goods on the person before they win.

You then let the new electee know what you (Dem Party or their bosses) know and they tell you want they want you to do. My guess is they are going hammer and tong against Sarah because she is clean.

So my guess is they have a lot of stuff on McCain, Graham-nesty, Crist and others. My guess is the Dem party has the goods.

The Clintons had it on Richardson and bombed him after he turned to Obama. Obama then makes sure the case against Richardson goes away. These people are evil.

Is there not a primary election where the two R’s run and the winner runs against the winning D in a general election?

This is a “special election” for the remaining year of John McHugh’s term after he was nominated to be Secretary of the Army. So, there was no primary for this election this year.

I found this interesting.... Do anyone have the answer?
Sarah Palin could make a huge difference in the NY23 special election, and everybody knows it. I hinted at this earlier today -- "Lipstick, baby!" -- and as I like to remind my readers from time to time, there are no accidents. Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman is in the fight of his life against the GOP establishment's hand-picked RINO, in a crucial election that Hoffman's media coordinator Rob Ryan says is "a referendum on the future of the Republican Party." One point to make clear: No official in the Hoffman campaign has said a word to me about Sarah Palin. But some of Hoffman's supporters are heartbroken that Sarah -- whom I dubbed the "Sweetheart of the Heartland" last year -- hasn't joined the fight against Dede Scozzafava...

I’d bet they call a Mao-loving communications lady a moderate too.

I think the answer there is that no Republican with any ambition for national elected office will endorse anyone in this race. The race is really radioactive to Republicans.

If you endorse someone and they don’t win the election, you have hurt your own political viability. And, endorsing someone outside your party, even if they win the election, such an endorsement isn’t really helpful to your future political career.

The leadership of the RCCC and the House leadership have screwed up with this candidate. They have doubled down with an all-in move rather than falling on their swords in disgrace for allowing this candidate to run as a R (I call Scozzafava a big “R” democRat).

The vetting process failed. Blaming it on staffers as Sessions and others in the RCCC have tried to do just points to a management problems. This is not a decision that should have been delegated to staffers. The problem isn’t the staffer, it is the person who delegated this to the staffer.

Fred Thompson obviously has no future plans politically. So his endorsement was available. Newt has been mentioned as a potential candidate in 2012, but I don’t think he really wanted to do that. I think his endorsement this week was a confirmation that he doesn’t care to run in 2012.

I don’t think that Sarah Palin is ready to take that jump. It would be a bold move, but there really isn’t an upside for Palin. Hoffman would benefit greatly, but Palin wouldn’t get much if he wins, and would accomplish nothing if Hoffman failed with her endorsement.

There is only one other Republican that I can think of who might make an endorsement in this race, and if he does, it would be really big news. He also is closer to Hoffman on the issues than anyone else. His name is John McHugh, and he was elected to this very seat last year by over 65% of the voters in his district. He would have local credibility well beyond any of the “celebrity” endorsements from national figures.

“In the Republican primaries, especially, the Tea Party movement could be a very significant force”

Prof. Franklin should realize that in the race that's generating all the hubbub the Republicans didn't have a primary. That's what brought Hoffman into the contest, as I understand it. The "electable" candidate, Ms. Scozzafava, was anointed with Potomac River water, unfit for bathing.

The Republican Party needs a thorough cleansing of national, state and county leadership as a first step toward regaining the trust of the grass-roots who are presently without representation. The sooner the better.

Good. If the RINO goes down, it’ll send the prissy Graham and the cowering McCain a message about the enthusiasm for McCain’s idea of remaking the GOP.

It's unfortunate but the GOP may have to shrink before it grows again. Either that or go the way of the Whigs.
