Leveling Limbaugh (WSJ Editorial Warns of Conservative Uprising)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Friday, October 16, 2009 | Editorial Staff

Posted on 10/15/2009 5:25:42 PM PDT by kristinn

The National Football League, in which each Sunday men weighing 365 pounds slam headlong into men weighing 245 pounds, has decided it can't handle Rush Limbaugh, talk-show host, age 58. C'mon guys, show some guts.

What began as a normal business deal—Mr. Limbaugh's participation in a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams NFL franchise—has degenerated into an unfortunate flap whose repercussions could extend well past Sunday afternoon football.

SNIP

What happened here, and is happening elsewhere in American life, is that Mr. Limbaugh's outspoken political conservatism is being deemed sufficient reason to ostracize him from polite society. By contrast, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who fires off his own brand of high-velocity, left-wing political commentary but lacks Mr. Limbaugh's sense of humor, appears weekly as co-host of NBC's "Football Night in America." We haven't heard anyone on the right say Mr. Olbermann's nightly ad-hominem rants should disqualify him from hanging around the NFL. Al Franken made it all the way to the U.S. Senate on a river of political vitriol.

But Rush Limbaugh gets hung out to dry by someone of Roger Goodell's establishment prominence, and barely a soul from that same fastidious establishment has the courage to step forward to criticize it.

It is no secret that this country's politics has become intense across the ideological spectrum. Rush Limbaugh lets his listeners blow off steam and then get on with the rest of their day. But if the people who claim to worry about such things want to see a truly angry right develop in this country, they should continue to remain silent while the left tries to drive Rush Limbaugh and others out of American political life. If that happens, the NFL by comparison will look like an afternoon tea.

Baltimore Colts? What rabid football fans they must be at the WSJ!

Things I can't get used to:

1. The Colts in Indianapolis,
2. The Rams in St. Louis,
3. The Cardinals in Phoenix, and
4. Michael Vick in Philadelphia.

I sent the link you provided to my oldest and without contaminating his mind as to why I was sending it then asked him if this is where he came up with the “Chefs”. He laughed and said NO, that he called them “Chefs” earlier when the Cowboys ruled... He said that somebody copied him in that commercial....

Too funny, again thanks for the link..

I never understood being a sports fan of any kind. You are making an emotional investment in the outcome of an event over which you have no control. Why torture yourself?

Well, that almost sounds like following politics to me. ;)

Haha - the bad news is these days, they’re more like bad short order cooks. But that’s too long to paint in the end zone. Then again, they never see the end zone.

No kidding. The NFL doesn't know what really vindictive looks like. A bunch of French toffs found out one time, after one of them made a crack at the people's expense about "Let them eat cake."

[SG]I know full well the NFL is run and populated with unrequited arrgant lefties

That's why God created NASCAR.

Don't be too sure about that.

The France family has moved substantively to "dump the one what brung them" and "de-redneck-ize" NASCAR. It's been years since I've seen an image including a Confederate flag broadcast from a NASCAR race -- they're there, somewhere, but the broadcasters carefully screen them out.

Likewise, NASCAR is pushing hard to reduce its Junior Johnson / King Richard factor by bringing in brie-eating drivers and moving events to targeted media markets. They especially want the black demographic -- hence the "de-redneckification" purge.

If it were up to NASCAR, all their drivers and crew chiefs would sound like they were MBA's from Connecticut.

I like it! Boycotting the Super Bowl. I was upset with their Direct TV exclusive and have been weaning myself. Time to go cold turkey. I will plan a non stupor bowl event.

The stands will be full as usual.

I’m afraid your right. I personally have never cared for the week-end gladiators.

I won’t watch the NFL again.

Nor I.

What we need now is someone to post the names of the sponsors of the games on TV each week.

I think if I were the NFL management...I’d have a meeting this weekend and start to figure some escape path. If a quarter of the fans get wise to this political hi-jinks of the league’s players...then their salary structure and media coverage will start to drop big-time. They really can’t afford to be this stupid.

They especially want the black demographic -- hence the "de-redneckification" purge.

MLB has dilly-dallied around with this concept, trying to urbanize their in-game promos, merchadising and so forth, all with the intent of "bringing home" the black fan.

That's whats behind the Mandela-ization of Jackie Robinson. It's really quite pathetic what aging white liberals in the game are capable of with too much time and money on their hands.

I grew up in Baltimore. It wasn’t so much people were upset that the Colts left, as I remember they sucked and Johnny U had long since retired.

People were pissed that they took the Colts name and history with them.

Jackie Robinson can stand on his own merits and would probably prefer to, without the hero-worship and Race Man pamphleteering that has been written and teleplayed about him. He basically just wanted to play baseball with the other big kids, when you get down to it.

Imagine people making a big deal out of Dirk Nowitzky or Manu Genobili or Larry Bird just because he was white -- "wow, he really can jump, Bob!" Or Hideki Matsui, same basis. Which was what was happening with Donovan McNabb, which is what Rush commented on that time, and is happening in open-wheel racing with women drivers like Milka Duno, Lyn St. James, and Danica Patrick.

What's pathetic is when old liberal moonbats start shaking themselves down even before Jesse and Rev. Al show up, rattling their cups.

You lucky bastard!

-a Raider fan

I'm right there with you, bruddah!

Thankfully, for the past 10 years the NFL has served only as a means of passing time until college hoops starts...go Zags!

BTW, speaking from personal experience, Gonzaga's campus is so small (150 acres) that seemingly everybody knows when you cut a class, whether you're an athlete or a regular student. There's no place to hide.

Shoot, I had no place to hide during economics classes my junior year...both semesters, there were five students in the class. It was brutal.
