Bill Ayers: “I wrote Dreams From My Father”
Chicago Daily Observer ^ | October 6, 2009 | Anne Leary

Posted on 10/06/2009 8:22:46 AM PDT by PBRCat

There I was, sitting in Reagan National Monday morning, sipping a Starbucks by the United counter before going through security. I had a little time, so I was browsing through the news. That's when I saw Bill Ayers, an instant blight. Scruffy, thinning beard, dippy earring, and the wirerims, heading to order. I gathered my things, got my camera ready, and snapped a shot right when he got his coffee.

He gave me an uneasy cheesy smile when he realized I was taking his picture.

I asked--what are you doing in D.C. Mr. Ayers?

[He said] he was giving a lecture in Arlington to a Renaissance group on education--that's what I do, education--you shouldn't believe everything you hear about me, you know nothing about me.

Then, unprompted he said--I wrote Dreams From My Father. I said, oh, so you admit it. He said--Michelle asked me to. I looked at him. He seemed eager. He's about my height, short. He went on to say--and if you can prove it, we can split the royalties. So I said, stop pulling my leg. Horrible thought. But he came again--I really wrote it, the wording was similar. I said I believe you probably heavily edited it. He said--I wrote it.

I thought I would edit the story for the benefit of any police officers who might be here , and couln't write what was in their minds.BTW I only added 7 words.

My camera is dated a half day off.

The photo claims to have been taken by a Blackberry 8310 at 2009:10:04 18:13:43. That would be Sunday afternoon 2:13:43 pm Washington time.

Blackberries are phones. I would expect a phone camera to have an accurate time stamp, given its ability to get the time from the phone network. E.g., the pix from my Motorola phone are consistently stamped about 14 or 15 seconds later than the actual time (I attribute the delay to sloppy programming — reading the clock after conversion to JPEG, not when the picture was actually taken). However, I've never had a Blackberry, so I can't say for sure if they also get their photo time stamps from the network.

As another poster mentioned, Ayers maintains plausible deniability in the way he did this. One possible explanation—he’s sending a warning to Obama.

Possible, but not very plausible in my mind. To me, something that comes this far 'out of the blue' needs more than a photo to be convincing.

From what i have read on this thread, it seems this reporter/blogger has written quite a bit about Ayers and the authorship question. Therefore what are the odds that (1) she just happens to be at the same airport at the same time as him, (2) just happens to spot him amidst all the thousands that were probably there, and then (3) he just happens to spill the beans to her, to tell her exactly what she had been longing to hear from him.

I'm not saying 1 and 2 are false, but it seems to strain belief (and a person's good fortune) that all three would happen. Sort of like a treasure hunter on her day off going to a beach and thrusting a large umbrella into the sand when, lo and behold it hits upon a box buried in the sand, and eureka! the box is full of gold coins! Okay, i can believe she struck something in the sand, struck a box even, but that the box yielded up a bevy of treasure strikes me as a little too much good fortune.

I think it more likely that it happened this way: she saw him at the airport (had she been aware he might be going to that airport that day?), took his photo, and then she said some things to him that made it clear she thought he wrote Obama's book and was looking for a bit of buried treasure from him. So he sarcastically told her "yeah, sure, i wrote the book" and then later more sarcasm "yeah yeah, whatever, you prove i wrote it and we'll split the royalties honey". It is the tone of the conversation that i question and wonder how accurately it was reported.

I think what Ayers was saying is that Obama is getting the royalties, not Ayers, and he’s a little PO’ed about it, and is telling Leary if she proves it he would be willing to split the royalties with her.

Sounds like Michelle did her homework in burying the evidence.

I’m almost positive that Bill Ayers wrote this. I’m wondering if this blogger is writing a satire piece?

I do not believe he is a decent man. He is a manipulator, not surprising considering the level of dysfunction in his family. My gut tells me he sought out Michelle so many years ago because of what her father could do for his career.

I came across this article the other day.

Mrs O: The truth about Michelle Obama’s ‘working class’ credentialsBy SHARON CHURCHER
Last updated at 22:32 23 February 2008
[excerpt]
“...
Indeed, according to family friends, Michelle’s father was a volunteer organiser for the city’s Democratic Party, a by-word for machine politics in America, and his loyalty was rewarded with a well-paid engineering job at Chicago’s water plant. Even before overtime, he earned $42,686 - 25 per cent more than High School teachers at the time....

She used to baby sit for Jesse Jackson and it has been said Jesse’s daughter was one of her best friends.

It is all about Obama and he will say anything and use anyone to get what he wants.

BHO & Michelle in Bali in 90’s

By the time Mr. Obama landed at Times Books, he had a partial manuscript. He required minimal editing, said Henry Ferris, his editor, who is now a vice president and executive editor at William Morrow. He simply needed guidance in paring and shaping the sections already written and keeping the rest from becoming too long. The writing, Mr. Ferris said, “is very much his own.”

The two worked mostly by telephone and by manuscripts sent by Federal Express between New York and Chicago. Mr. Obama, an inveterate journal writer who had published poems in a college literary magazine but had never attempted a book, struggled to finish. His half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, said he eventually retreated to Bali for several months with his wife, Michelle, “to find a peaceful sanctuary where there were no phones.” He showed drafts to a few close relatives including his grandmother, of whom Ms. Soetoro-Ng said, “It probably made her a little nervous, having the family written about, just because you don’t do that in Kansas.”

...........
I read that whatever he wrote in Bali never became a book. Obviously he had to wait until he had help with writing the fairytale.
................

true on both counts; no precise dates for Bali trip in anything I could find.

I think his choice of Bali, however, was because his mother was there.

His original advance was over $100,000; he never came through with the book and it was reported that he had to pay an undisclosed sum back to publisher. He subsequently was given another advance

From article I cited:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/18/us/politics/18memoirs.html?ei=5124&en=06380c5da09c3c80&ex=1368849600&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink&pagewanted=all

“Ms. Dystel suggested Mr. Obama write a book proposal. Then she got him a contract with Poseidon Press, a now-defunct imprint of Simon & Schuster. When he missed his deadline, she got him another contract and a $40,000 advance from Times Books.”

.............
some other interesting names & tidbits-—

“But he said he was not even thinking about political consequences when he wrote the memoir. In fact, he said, one editor warned him back then that his references to drug use could come back to haunt him — if he were ever nominated for the Supreme Court.

“This is an example of what happens when you look at things backwards,” Mr. Obama said when asked whether he had his political future in mind when he first began to write. “Then everything looks like, ‘Ah! Of course this was part of some well-calibrated consideration.’ But frankly, no. It would have been very hard for me to anticipate that I’d be where I am today, where a book that I wrote almost 20 years ago now would even be read.”

Early Exposure

Mr. Obama’s story first surfaced publicly in February 1990, when he was elected as the first black president of The Harvard Law Review. An initial wire service report described him simply as a 28-year-old, second-year student from Hawaii who had “not ruled out a future in politics”; but in the days that followed, newspaper reporters grew interested and produced long, detailed profiles of Mr. Obama.

The coverage prompted a call to him from Jane Dystel, a gravelly-voiced literary agent described by Peter Osnos, then the publisher of Times Books, as “a good journeyman with a hard edge.” ... Ms. Dystel suggested Mr. Obama write a book proposal. Then she got him a contract with Poseidon Press, a now-defunct imprint of Simon & Schuster. When he missed his deadline, she got him another contract and a $40,000 advance from Times Books.

Mr. Obama’s original plan was to write a book about race relations. But, sitting down to write, he found his mind “pulled toward rockier shores.” So the book became more personal — the record of an interior journey, as he put it in the introduction, “a boy’s search for his father, and through that a search for a workable meaning for his life as a black American.”

Mr. Obama was given an office to write in at the University of Chicago through a surprising connection. Douglas G. Baird, a professor who was head of the law school’s appointments committee, had learned of Mr. Obama from Michael W. McConnell, a conservative constitutional scholar then at Chicago whom President Bush would later make a federal judge.

Professor McConnell encountered Mr. Obama during the editing of an article he wrote for The Harvard Law Review, Professor Baird said recently. “He sent a note saying this person is really brilliant, we should have him on our radar screen,” Professor Baird said. Professor Baird called Mr. Obama at Harvard and asked if he was interested in teaching.

“I don’t remember his exact words, but it was something to the effect that, ‘Well, in fact, I want to write this book.’ What he really wanted was the Virginia Woolf equivalent of a clean, well lighted room.” So Professor Baird got him one, a small office near the law library, along with a law school fellowship that Professor Baird hoped might later lead to his full-time teaching.”

“His memoir is, as one publisher put it, “the single most vetted book in American politics right now.” [puh—leez]

I follow your logic and it makes sense.

A lot depends on the unknowns. Many possible scenarios.

he had to pay an undisclosed sum back to publisher. He subsequently was given another advance

That's actually very curious.

A nobody, who'd done nothing and written nothing, can't produce a book. Dog bites man. Yawn.

But then, somebody decides to give him another advance. Why? THAT'S man bites dog.

Much more to this story.

Don't have time to read through all the posts, but someone had asked whether there was an educational conference in Washington that week. One possibility is a conference in which the Dali Lama was participating that was called: “Educating World Citizens for the 21st Century: Educators, Scientists and Contemplatives Dialogue on Cultivating a Healthy Mind, Brain and Heart.”
It apparently started on the 5th or 6th of October.

All very carefully crafted IMO.

No mention that Madelyn's borther, Charles T Payne was Assistant Director of the University of Chicago Library at the time, and was still there when Obama taught Law there...Payne didn't retire from the library until 1995.

More telling, what is left out.

There seems to be a difference between ghost writers / speech writers and people like Ayers who have really shouldered this guy. I guess it would be like one of my professors taking care of my college, career, books, wrote out my plan for the white house, set me up with everything, do everything and then I tell the world he was scum and I hated everything he stood for.

America is in trouble.
