Is Obama a literary fraud? Can of worms reopened

he long-held suspicion in American right-wing circles that Barack Obama was not the sole author - not even the lead author - of his brilliantly received 1995 memoir, Dreams From My Father, has been rekindled by the publication of a new book about the Obamas, Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage.

The book by Christopher Andersen, author of a string of unauthorised celebrity biographies, has received considerable media coverage in recent days because of its claim that Barack and Michelle came close to splitting up. She apparently was bitter about her husband devoting too much time to his political ambitions and not enough to his family. She hated his chain-smoking and snoring, and he complained to friends that his wife was unreasonable, Andersen claims.

Receiving much less attention is the fact that the book has opened a can of worms concerning the provenance of Dreams From My Father. It appears to support the theory that Obama needed considerable help to produce Dreams - labeled by Time magazine "the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician" - and yet has never owned up to using a ghost writer or even co-author.

The man most excited by this revelation is Jack Cashill, an American writer who has been producing articles since last summer for the conservative site American Thinker in which he argues that Obama could not have written Dreams on his own. Cashill argues that his likely collaborator was his controversial Chicago neighbour, Bill Ayers.

Ayers was the former anti-Vietnam war activist whose relationship with Obama came up during the presidential election campaign in 2008. John McCain tried to make capital out of Obama befriending a known radical who had co-founded of the Weather Underground group. The controversy eventually dropped out of the headlines after Obama dismissed

This guy Ayers must be a fantastic writer.

Very modest fellow, too, not to take any credit.

Literary Fraud?

Political Fraud!

America was sold a “liberal” obama, and got a marxist.

Problems of a Manchurian. Perhaps the book should have been Dreams from a Manchurian!

Another British blog:

It had never occurred to me ....

...that Barack Obama could have written those two volumes of autobiography that analyzed a life of very little achievement.......

On their knees. Invest in knee pads, the media (and ‘rats) must go through a lot of them.

What ever happened to the pregnant staffer shipped off to the Bahamas or wherever?

Has anyone followed up on that?

I especially find it interesting that the UK press is all over Obama stories. . . .

I expect more hit pieces on Obama from the UK, given The One's treatment of their PM.

Gibbs also said awful things in a press conference about the British Press because of that article that was written about the PM running through the kitchen at the UN to talk to BO. Gibbs trashing them will not sit well.

Thanks for the link! I'm currently reading Sam Tanenhaus's biography of Whittaker Chambers (1997). Chambers was an intermittent student at Columbia during the early 1920's. It's amazing the amount of detailed information, recollections, reminiscences, etc. concerning his presence there has been documented over the intervening years.

When I read Chambers's "Witness", I was surprised that he didn't mention Mortimer Adler's name who was certainly there at the same time along with the likes of Mark Van Doren, Lionel Trilling and Clifton Fadiman. Sure enough, for his biography, Tanenhaus did indeed interview Adler who must have been 90 years old at the time. He certainly did remember Chambers and added some anecdotes concerning his Columbia years.

I suspect that Obama may have gone "underground" during the alleged years at Columbia, much like Whittaker Chambers did later during the 1930's!
