EDITORIAL: No, You Can't Read the Legislation
Washington Times ^ | September 25, 2009 | staff

Democrats don't want lawmakers to know what's in health care legislation before Congress votes on it. President Obama and Democratic leaders apparently recognize their chances of ramming through a vote are hurt if members of Congress actually have a chance to read the bills.

On Wednesday, Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee killed a Republican amendment to Chairman Max Baucus' health care proposal that would require a three-day waiting period between when the bill is completed and a committee vote could be held. This short waiting period would allow panel members time to examine the actual legislative language and full cost of the Baucus bill before voting on it. This is important for a tax-heavy bill that - when combined with other existing legislation - could nationalize as much as 10 percent of the U.S. economy.

House Republicans have introduced a measure that would require the final version of all nonemergency legislation to be posted online 72 hours prior to any floor vote. This would be a valuable reform, but few Democrats will have the courage to buck House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and provide the support needed to ensure members actually have the chance to know what they are voting on. Mrs. Pelosi promised a 48-hour waiting period before a vote on the $787 billion stimulus package but didn't deliver. We wouldn't be surprised to see similar shenanigans this time around.

So, Congress can’t be permitted to READ a bill before voting.

But, I have to wait 3 days to buy a handgun to give me time to “cool off” when I already have a safe full of them at home?

This kind of stupidity can only exist in DC.

I used to scoff at talk of revolution / civil war, etc.

Not so much, any more.

There’s a slow train coming.

Well now we know where Al Gore’s lock box is, it is where Pelosi hides bills before they can vote on them.

Any member of congress that accepts this should be voted out of office.

How can they say they are representing the people when they do not know what they are voting on?

Perhaps what we need is a consitutional amendment that says no bill can voted on unless it is published 30 days before the vote.

There are few things that have to be done in a hurry. Writing laws is not one of them.

How dare they vote on something they haven't read. In other words, they are all welfare queens taking the taxpayers money for just lazing around Washington not doing anything other than sucking up the taxpayers money.

DO YOUR JOB OR RESIGN!

The woman is insane with power, but there are some cures for her insanity.

Her need is too urgent for us to wait until the next elections, so start with impeachment.

Otherwise, Pelosi is right to be afraid of what is behind the rhetoric she has inspired.

“This kind of stupidity can only exist in D.C.”

Respectfully disagree. This kind of stupidity can only exist in the minds of totalitarians. In this case, the totalitarian minds in question are locked in American congressperson’s bodies.

IMHO

Senator Kerry said the bill is too complicated for people to understand. At townhall meetings in August the average citizen knew more about the bill than their representatives.

There is no support on either side of the aisle for something like this. There was a plank for this in the Contract With America and it was quickly broken.
