Not America's Proudest Moment
CBS ^ | 9/13/09 | Bob Schieffer

Forget Bipartisanship, Comity or Civility - Schieffer Says Mindless Meanness Has Invaded the Public Commons

(CBS) That was not a State of the Union speech we heard the other night, but it had all the trappings - and when that Congressman hollered "You lie!" at the President, we did get a snapshot of the nation's state.

It was not a pretty picture.

The country is in an angry mood - people are frustrated, tempers are short, congressmen are being shouted down at town hall meetings (where constituents sometimes show up with guns), and at rallies like the one yesterday in Washington where people carried signs such as "Bury Health Care with Kennedy."

Dear Dude (Schieffer), this in-your-face community organizing can cut both ways. Get used to it.

The President called Republicans and the American people in general liars before Joe Wilson spoke up. 0bama set the tone and now he wants to whine about it. 0bama is a whiner and a liar.

No it wasn’t the classiest thing that ever happened. However this is more theater than substance and I really don’t care about, not because of party, but because democracy is messy sometimes

Bob knows nothing apparently about America’s beginnings then. These are some of our proudest moments! Americans standing up for their rights and exercising their rights of free speech, right to bear arms and freedom of assembly. Fighting back against fascism that threatens our republic. Against enemies foreign and domestic. We the people.

Brother, Bob, are you ever wrong or just too deeply on the other side.

Hey Bob, I seem to remember that it was the liberals who started the nastiness during Clinton's impeachment, intensified it during the 2000 election and its aftermath, and refined it over the past eight years.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, you have the gall to essentially blame the GOP for it?

And I love this quote....

"Put aside for the moment who is right and who is wrong in the current debate, and ask yourself: Can anyone really be proud of the side of America this argument is bringing out?"

Where has this guy been for the last eight years? Under a rock?

How quickly they forget jeering (and supporting or standing mute) President Bush when he proposed saving Social Security.

Liars, racists and hypocrites, the lot of ‘em, bob in the lead pack.

Blah, blah, blah - here’s a clue Bob: the problem with the country is a president who lies with impunity, and a press that pretends not to notice.

baraq whats his name had just got done excoriating all his opponents as spreaders of falsehood and misinformation, and that was OK?

Oh, and as to the togetherness after 9/11; that lasted a total of, what? three weeks? before the dimowits were dragging their heels on every aspect of the war on terror? From then on, they called President Bush a liar and an imperialist on a daily basis, for nearly 8 years? Where were you on that, Schieffer?

Oh, I know. Now they’re pillorying YOUR boy.

Quelle horreur! That may make a ruling-class aspirant like Schieffer nervous, to be sure. But in fact, I can't think of a single period in American politics that looked like that - except the one between 1775 and now...

Schieffer, like the rest of the dying, lame, biased mainstream media suddenly find outrage after 8 years of silence. Coinky-dink? I think not. FU, Bob.

Bob’s just seeing what he wants to see.

I started off life with Bob’s worldview. Sad, but true. Fortunately for myself, I was innoculated as a young man by living in the Emerald People’s Republic on Kincaid Street right across from the University of Oregon. I learned in that community and in that college the true meaning of diversity and tolerance. Tolerance meant, “We approve of your right to say whatever you want, as long as we agree with what you say.” Diversity meant, “We want a variety of people from many races, ethnic groups, and backgrounds who say and do the same thing from a leftist viewpoint.” I left the place profoundly in love with my country, my Constitution, and the exceptionalism of my home culture.

Now I see something like this article and feel sorry for the poor schlub. He’ll go to his grave looking at the world like a small boy looking at the street through a crack in the fence.
