Kennedy Endorses Water Dog For Obama Family
[from the unbelievable but true file!]
WBZTV.Com ^ | January 13, 2009
Senator Ted Kennedy made an important political endorsement Tuesday [January 2009]. Massachusetts' Senior Senator endorsed the Portuguese water dog as the perfect pet for the nation's new first family.
[snip]
"A Portuguese water dog is the perfect choice for first dog," Kennedy said in a written statement. "The Obama girls -- and their parents -- will love a Portuguese water dog. They're loyal, smart, loving and they became a real part of the family. And they definitely do not shed."
Senator Kennedy and wife Vicki have three Portuguese water dogs of their own. Sunny and Splash often accompany Kennedy to the Senate. "They love being around people and being part of the action," he said.
The Kennedy's just added a third Portuguese water dog to the family, a puppy named Captain Courageous or 'Cappy' for short. ..."

THE family of US president Barack Obama have chosen a Portuguese water dog to be the first pet.
In what was one of the White House's most tightly kept secrets, the Washington Post revealed Mr Obama's daughters, 10-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha, have settled on a pup named Bo.
The Post published photos of the presidential puppy meeting Mr Obama's family. See the photos here.
The black-and-white puppy is a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy. Bo is scheduled to make his big debut to the American public early next week.
Mr Obama's daughters chose the name Bo because first lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley, the newspaper reported.
White House aides told The Associated Press that the office of the first lady arranged an exclusive deal on the dog story with the Post.

Ted "Water Dog" Kennedy...
Chappaquiddick:
"On Friday night July 18, 1969 around midnight a married man, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, was driving his oldsmobile on the island of Chappaquiddick with a single woman named Mary Jo Kopechne aboard when he, allegedly drunk, drove the car off a bridge and into a pond. He was leaving a party attended only by five married men and six unmarried women. Kennedy escaped the car and swam to shore. Mary Jo Kopechne was not quite so lucky. She died in the car, in the water.
Kennedy failed to even contact the police for a full nine hours, after he was told the car and body had been found.
The Kennedy family chartered a plane to immediately fly the victim's body to her hometown, Wilkes-Barre. No autopsy was conducted.

"Edward Klein, speaking to WAMU guest host Katty Kay, said one of Kennedy's 'favorite topics of humor was, indeed, Chappaquiddick.'
"He would ask people, 'Have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?' said Klein, a former Newsweek foreign editor and former editor in chief of the New York Times Magazine."

YouTube video: Kennedy liked to joke about Chappaquiddick?
"This isn't an accusation from Ted Kennedy's political opponents, but a nostalgic remembrance by one of his friends. Ed Klein, former Newsweek editor, tells the Diane Rehm Show:
"I dont know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick? That is just the most amazing thing. Its not that he didnt feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too."
... and King Obozo named his Water Mutt after himself (no joke)!!!
Soooooo....I guess when he called them dogs, he would say “Here Poucha. Here Poucha.”
ok so he joked about Chappaquidik...horrible taste....incredibly poor self reflection
he names his retrivers Splash, Sunny and Cappy...lol....there is no there there to this one...
come on now ..really...lurkers are going to think we are goofy on this one
Yeah, it would’ve been funnier if the dogs were named “Splash”, “Gurgle” and “Flea” (get it - “flee”?).
sux for Dems this happened in recess
That first dog looks kinda “nappy headed”!
Sounds like someone has/had issues...
1) He joked about Chappaquiddick a lot
2) "Cappy", as the article states, is short for "Captain Courageous"
3) "Splash"...
It is way more likely than not that the names were selected to once again make light of the tragic incident.
naming retrievers about water stuff is not uncommon
it's hard to live life without reference to water if you live near it and have boats and water sporting dogs
"Captain Courageous is the heroic defender of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Though not all three at the same time as this is impossible even for a superhero. His amazing superpowers include the ability to lead men into raging battle, the courage of a thousand kamikaze, and the stubbornness of a hundred mules"
"Captain Courageous is actually an "omnipresent" supernatural being who is called to our planet when "brave men and women ask for courage." During WW2 Captain Courageous responds to Americans' pleas and appears to help the Allies. He has super strength; flight, limited invulnerability, and can exist unaided underwater."
I’m sorry for all the attention this Vineyard pond scum is getting. Can we just let him rot in his grave?
He ruined the chances of someone who might have been the best Supreme Court Judge to date. And now we have the illiterate affirmative action Sotomayor, whom I contend will disgrace the robe for her entire tenure. She’s the reason Supreme Court Judges should have limits on their term in that office. Or at least have to be re-approved every two years.
Umm, he was less sympathetic to the 2nd Amendment than Scalia, and that proved to matter.
Odds are the dog was named after Kipling’s book, not a cartoon character.
I agree, most water dogs have water-themed names. Not just PWDs, but Chessies. Labs just get named any old thing, there are so many of them.
Surprised they are not named “Splash”, “Stoli”, and “Grey Goose”
Given the fact that he liked to joke about the Mary Jo incident so much, it’s far more likely that he was taking a shot at those who he believed expected too much of him on that day. ie, expected him to perform like a “superhero” of sorts (Captain Courageous).
Kipling’s book was titled “Captains Courageous” (with an ‘s’ after Captain).
