The caller who alerted Cambridge police to a possible break-in at the house of Henry Louis Gates Jr. earlier this month told a dispatcher that she had seen two suitcases on the porch and said she wasn't sure if it was a break-in.

It doesn’t matter, Gates wasn’t arrested for breaking and entering. He was arrested for how he acted when the police came to investigate.

In a recordings of police radio transmissions also released today, the dispatcher asked officers to "respond to a possible B and E in progress"....

B and E -- white pig codespeak for Black and Entering!

I doesn’t matter. If the police aren’t sure, they should cautiously assume the worst.

The person who called it in was very polite..and just trying to protect the neighborhood.

I can’t figure out why the 911 dispatcher was so rude over the mention of the suitcases.

He was arrested cause he was acting like an erratic jackass “You don’t know who your messing with” “Your only doing this cause I’m black” the cop knew this guy wasn’t playing with a full deck.

If they're that stupid, to hell with them.

Also suitcases on the porch might signify the police’s most unpredictable call....that of domestic disturbance...

The one thing that the Glob failed to report that was reported by Michelle McPhee on wtkk 96.9 was that there were 9 breakins in the area...Including one at that same apartment area a week before the incident.
I would expect everyones senses were heightned because of this.

The suitcases could be used to carry out the loot.

What seems to be stupid would be to unnecessarily insult people who may help us take back our country. I lurked since the day after Drudge hit enter and introduced Monica to the world. Since then I have turned many on to this site and have informed people of things I have learned on this site, that the press never told people. Your comment is unfortunate. Go ahead, flame away. Won't bother me. I am not stupid now and I wasn't stupid when I was a lurker.

People going through domestic problems have been known to break into their own homes in violation of restraining orders. The officer had a duty to cover all the bases. Gates threw out the race card and Obama instinctively supported his buddy. The president got a cheap lesson on why empathy does not be mix well with judgements.

Gates is a jerk who would invent a grievance no matter what the police did. Can you imagine what he would do if the police watched someone actually break into his house and allowed the break-in to go on ... while doing nothing to stop the thief? He’s just a loser who has an 800 lb. chip on his shoulder and would complain about ANYTHING!!!

Bet more can be gotten ahold of than just the audio. If they use CAD (Computer Assisted Dispatching) and many departments do these days, there will be something called a chronology that is a text record of all info entered into the dispatch console along with all messaging between the dispatcher and a "call taker", provided they use "call takers", who actually take the 911 calls and type in info which is IM'd to the actual dispatch - sounds inefficient but some departments do it that way. The chronology will have a running text of the event until the call is closed out.

Can't comment on manners, but I'd be rather skeptical if suitcases on the porch was the reason given for thinking there was a break-in. In a predominantly white suburb, absent some kind of noisy altercation, neighbors would probably take this to mean that the occupant of said house was about to embark on some travel.
