NASA promises 'greatly improved' Moon landing footage

NASA has tantalisingly announced that it will release "greatly improved video imagery from the July 1969 live broadcast of the Apollo 11 moonwalk" on Thursday.

The agency reports (http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2009/jul/HQ_M09-125_Newseum_Apollo_tapes.html): "The release will feature 15 key moments from Neil Armstrong's and Buzz Aldrin's historic moonwalk using what is believed to be the best available broadcast-format copies of the lunar excursion, some of which had been locked away for nearly 40 years."

We assume the footage in question is gleaned from the original magnetic tapes recorded by the Parkes Observatory in Australia, and which belatedly turned up (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/06/29/moon_landing_tapes/) in a storage facility in Perth.

In 2006, NASA admitted (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/08/15/nasa_footage_mishap/) it had mislaid the tapes which were supposed to be in its Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland. As a result, the world has (until Thursday, we hope), had to make do with NASA's inadequate copy of the original broadcast, captured on 16mm film from a monitor screen.

About an hour and a 1/2 of just NASA footage during Apollo, amazing stuff.

Even better, I recorded it on the hard drive of my cable box in April when it was shown on Showtime. I've got several programs about the Apollo program that have been broadcast this year saved. There is a really good 6-part series called Moon Machines that I recorded off the Discovery Science Channel back in February. I think it may have been shown again once or twice more since then.

I was at boarding school here in Australia. The school finally cracked and bought televisions for the boarding houses. We wouldn’t give them back afterwards :)

We saw the original broadcast, and I remember being disappointed with the quality of the picture, even though it was thrilling to know where it was coming from.

I lived in New Mexico at the time...was 7....my fathered worked on the LEM @ White Sands....remember watching the landing on TV....I was awe struck...and didn't really realize the significance and impact it had round the world...living in a remote desert does that...

My Dad no loner is with us....but some of his souvenirs from that time remain a family treasure...thanks Dad....you truly were one of the "Greatest Generation".....

Back in 1969 my dad bought my brothers and I a model Saturn VI rocket all with even the moon lander... should have kept it, it would have been worth some money now...

I can still remember it back in 1969 , it was a family event, we spent hours glued to the TV watching switching back and forth from channel to channel to see what network had the best pictures and coverage...
The one thing that sticks on your mind is the sound of the beep ... beep ... when you heard them talk ....
in a few months and years, the pictures were in color..

If this was faked, then how can they explain that ?
Looks like a meteorite .... good thing that they missed it ...
