A violent sexual predator is expected to be sentenced today to anywhere from 10 to 50 years in prison for chasing down, beating and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman on a street here two years ago. Eric Rangel, 22, was found guilty by a jury in March of committing the April 22, 2007 attack at 3 a.m. on North Beverwyck Road.

At the time of the assault, Rangel, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, was employed as a cook at a pizzeria about a half-mile from where the incident occurred. In the trial in Superior Court in Morristown, Rangel's attorney, public defender Neill Hamilton, conceded that Rangel attacked the woman, but downplayed the seriousness of her injuries and argued the attack did not involve sexual assault. Hamilton felt that lesser, third-degree criminal sexual contact charges would have sufficed.

Morris County Assistant Prosecutors Meg Rodriguez and LaJuan Tucker countered that not only were the woman's injuries significant, but Rangel was in the process of committing sexual assault when he was caught in the act "literally with his pants down" by a Parsippany patrolman. The woman, testified she had been walking home after attending a party at a friend's nearby house. Rangel chased her down, punched her repeatedly in the face and head, dragged her behind shrubbery, pulled down her pants and touched her genitals, she testified.

Along with seeing grisly photos of the woman's swollen, bloodied and battered face, the jury also heard a recording of the chilling 911 call she made while being chased and attacked by Rangel. On the call, the woman could be heard screaming repeatedly and getting scolded by a dispatcher for yelling. The dispatcher was fired six months later for "mishandling" that 911 call, the New Jersey State Police have said.

27 years.

Pretty short time.

As one of the commentors on nj.com wrote, here’s hoping a fellow-inmate will make his time in prison a lot shorter.

Parsippany man sentenced to 27 years in prison for sexual assault
Friday July 10, 2009, 7:30 PM

PARSIPPANY -- A violent sexual predator was sentenced today to 27 years in state prison for chasing down, beating and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman on a Parsippany street two years ago. Eric Rangel, 22, was found guilty by a jury in March of committing the attack on April 22, 2007 at 3 a.m. on North Beverwyck Road.

Eric Rangel, 21, is lead into Superior Court where he was sentenced to 27 years in State Prison for the attack of a young woman on Parsippany street two years ago.

At the time of the assault, Rangel, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, was employed as a cook at a pizzeria about a half-mile from where the incident occurred. He claimed he was drunk and did not know what he was doing, and afterward could not even remember the attack.

Rangel and his attorney, public defender Neill Hamilton, both asked for leniency and a sentence more on the minimum side, of 12 years in state prison. Rangel had no prior criminal history, Hamilton said. "Up until this point, he was a relatively law-abiding person who drank too much and worked as a pizzeria cook," Hamilton said. "This is aberrational for him in his life. It's completely out of character for him."

But Superior Court Salem Ahto, sitting in Morristown, imposed a sentence closer to the maximum, and told Rangel, "You personify one of a woman's greatest fears - encountering a brutal, sexually deviant predator."  In the trial, Hamilton conceded that Rangel attacked the woman, but downplayed the seriousness of her injuries and argued the attack did not involve sexual assault. Hamilton felt that lesser, third-degree criminal sexual contact charges would have sufficed.

“...he was a relatively law-abiding person who drank too much and worked as a pizzeria cook..”

Relatively, unless, of course, you take into account that illegally being in this country thing, and that illegally working thing. And using a fake SSN, or stealing one, or not paying taxes.

Other than that, a relatively law-abiding person.

We must consider these aliens with love and forgiveness. For after all they invented philosphy, mathematics and computer science. They then sailed to Africa, taught the blacks, who made Western Man what he is today. Always remember “Our Diversity Is Our Strength.” The subject of this article is evidence of that fact.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought the oddest part of this story was that the prosecutor in this case was apparently an American citizen named Meg Rodriguez, while the defendant was an illegal Mexican alien named Eric Rangel.

WTF?

you would think that Eric Rangel would be a black, pro-abortion catholic, tax-cheating, HUD-cheating congressman with Dominican Republic vacation rental properties like charlie rangel.

My last name’s Rodriguez and I’m an American citizen. My maiden name was two ‘z’ names hyphenated. Eric is a popular name in Latin America and Rangel is German not English. There were and are tons of German, Jewish, Italian, Irish, Arab, Chinese,Japanese (ad nauseum) immigrants to Latin America.

So this sleazy lawyer thinks that a violent rapist who chases down a total stranger and assaults her should get one free shot in a modern version of the Clinton "One-Free-Grope" rule? I don't think so. I prefer life without parole for scum like this (although I wouldn't object to the electric chair or lethal injection).

Yep, that’s the article I’d seen. Had to pick my jaw up off the floor several times before I’d finished.
