Panetta orders internal probe of secret spy program after some members of Congress say CIA misled them.
###
CIA Director Leon Panetta has ordered an internal inquiry into the agency's handling of a contentious and still highly classified intelligence program that has caused a heated dispute between the CIA and Democrats on the House intelligence committee.
The move by Panetta appears to be an implicit acknowledgment by the agency that it should have disclosed information about the post-9/11 secret program to Congress much earlier than it did.

CIA and congressional officials have refused to describe the nature of the covert program, but insisted it is not connected to the CIA's use of controversial "enhanced" interrogation techniques.
But the program's existence erupted into a major political dispute Wednesday night when seven Democrats on the House intelligence committee released a letter charging that the agency had "concealed significant actions" and "misled" members of Congress by failing to inform the oversight committees about the program until last month.
The Democrats demanded that Panetta "publicly correct" his statement of May 15 declaring that "it is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress."

Leon Panetta kills spy program kept secret from Congress
###
Excerpt:
The ongoing tussle between Congress and the CIA deepened Friday as a congresswoman said that CIA Director Leon Panetta had killed an eight-year-long covert spy program that had operated without the knowledge of Congress.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) told The Associated Press Friday that the program in question was “very, very serious,” adding that it “certainly deserved a serious debate at the time and through the years.”
Schakowksy, who serves as chairwoman of the Intelligence Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, also called for a full investigation into Panetta’s actions.

“It is inexcusable for the CIA to lie, mislead or withhold information from the Congress. The intelligence committee depends on the presentation of reliable and complete information when deliberating important decisions that impact the national security of the United States,” Schakowsky wrote.
CIA spokesman George Little did not directly respond to Schakowsky’s call for an investigation in an e-mail to POLITICO Friday afternoon.
“The CIA stands by what it has said many times before: it is not our policy or practice to mislead the Congress,” said Little.

No, Congresswoman .. the CIA knows who it can trust and who leaks.
And the CIA knows full well that many powerful congresscritters cannot be trusted with protecting and guarding our classified security secrets.
These idiots really want to go there and risk the
‘coincidental’ leaks about their dirt that will be appearing randomly in the WashTimes, Examiner and conservative blogs ?
Paybacks are hell .......
Bingo! My thoughts exactly.
I’ve always thought that the CIA was pissed at Bush for turning their “cold war” against Iraq and Afganistan into a shooting war. Hence the series of leaks damaging to the Bush administration. The CIA is non partisan. They will attempt to destroy anyone who threatens their fiefdom.

With the Vietnam War ending, Group 68 changed its name in 1974 to Concerned Americans Abroad (CAA). CAA remained active until 1978, working with other leftover antiwar groups, such as the VVAW offshoot Vietnam Veterans Against the War/Winter Soldier Organization (VVAW/WSO). CAA also partnered with antiwar elements of the US Democratic Party, which organized voters in Britain as Democrats Abroad (UK) and sent a representative to the 1976 Democratic National Convention. CAA and its allies campaigned for a range of causes which included the release of political prisoners, amnesty for draft dodgers, the impeachment of President Nixon, the abolition of the CIA, and the defense of renegade CIA agent Philip Agee and his journalist colleague Marc Hosenball (now with Newsweek), who were facing deportation proceedings for disclosing classified information about UK signals intelligence operations. Recent disclosures have confirmed that at this time Agee was cooperating with Soviet and Cuban intelligence to expose CIA operations.
For more info see the rest of the article and the appendix profile of Group 68.
The upshot is that the same network that was working to undermine Western intelligence during the Watergate era not only remains active, but has advanced considerably in political power.
Why would the Democrats want a CIA?
They should end funding for it. They hate the fact that they keep secrets that defend our country. So end it. Be done with it.
Psssst.... The CIA is a joke - - that much was made abundantly clear by the Plame fiasco where she and other rogue CIA elements teamed up with America-hating State Department socialists to try to fix the ‘04 election. Bush was smart enough to keep State out of the loop for most of his two terms, although they did still manage to get ahold of some interesting stuff to leak.
The real intelligence and the real power is now at DIA (NSA, etc.). The CIA is only kept around to be a whipping boy for the rats and the public “face” of America’s spy business for an ignorant chattering class that elects worthless morons like Ubama, Barbara Boxer, Maxine Waters, and so on and so forth, ad infinitum.
The rats figured out long ago that the downside in going after the Pentagon is a little too much for many members who want to get re-elected in districts with a high percentage of humans, and so they generally leave it (and its DIA) alone these days.
Let the rats beat up the worthless CIA. That’s what it’s there for.
Ping to lots of information throughout the thread, both pages. Don’t miss ETL’s post #9.
I bet this isn’t a “highly secret program” for very long!
Only if the media learns something about journalistic inquiry!
