Panetta orders internal probe of secret spy program after some members of Congress say CIA misled them.

CIA Director Leon Panetta has ordered an internal inquiry into the agency's handling of a contentious and still highly classified intelligence program that has caused a heated dispute between the CIA and Democrats on the House intelligence committee.
The move by Panetta appears to be an implicit acknowledgment by the agency that it should have disclosed information about the post-9/11 secret program to Congress much earlier than it did.

CIA and congressional officials have refused to describe the nature of the covert program, but insisted it is not connected to the CIA's use of controversial "enhanced" interrogation techniques.
But the program's existence erupted into a major political dispute Wednesday night when seven Democrats on the House intelligence committee released a letter charging that the agency had "concealed significant actions" and "misled" members of Congress by failing to inform the oversight committees about the program until last month.
The Democrats demanded that Panetta "publicly correct" his statement of May 15 declaring that "it is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress."

I’m not so sure yet. The republicans that were there sure don’t seem ‘scared’ of this little political ploy by the dems. In fact, they seem like they want an investigation. What bother me is that Panetta is being coy with his ‘internal investigation’ and Newsweek(as usual) is misleading the public.

The RATS are looking to go back to the pre-911 days. They will do this by purging the agency of actual workers and bring on more NE Liberal weenies to run cover for them.
It had better, or this will blow up in all of our faces. It never ceases to amaze me how Democrats are perfectly OK with damaging our national security to further their partisan ambitions.
With this behavior they set up a situation where the intelligence community will become motivated to do what they are falsely accused of doing: keeping the Dem Congress in the dark in order to keep those a..holes from spilling the beans on our intelligence practices.
If you remember, the CIA was running a psy-op backdoor operation against the Bush Whitehouse because it was filled with Dem operatives at the time.
You can almost guarantee this is going to come back and eat them.

I do know this: in the early days of the Clinton administration, I saw him and Laura Tyson on Meet the Press arguing against balanced budgets. Then the Republicans took over congress, forced a sort of balanced budget on Clinton, and Panetta has been taking credit for Democrat "fiscal conservatism" ever since. He even has an institute based on this lie.

Step 2. After you win an election, install your operatives as directors of these agencies so they will be accepted as credible authority figures and not as the threat they are to national security...
Step 3. Have your new directors fire or marginalize those agency employees whose compliance with your agenda cannot be guaranteed...
Step 4: Have your new directors promote those employees who share your ideology or agenda, or hire additional ones as needed to ensure all departments have a "minder" for all other staffers and control over the flow of information out of those agencies and to supress potential contrary leaks.
Step 5 : Have your new directors conduct "investigations" and "kangaroo hearings" to set the stage for the hit, and use installed or known compliant staffers as "witnesses" to the events - real or fictional- in your allegations to provide bait and fodder for the press to carry your message.
Step 6 : Have your new directors with their new "credibility" confess to and apologize for the allegations you desire the American people to accept as "fact." Repeat as needed until the public cries out for an overhaul, a purge or even elimination of the targeted agency or policy.

Apparently, it’s a sin for a Republican to characterize things that happen during closed door intelligence committee meetings, but it’s refreshing when Democrats to the same thing.

That said, this couldn't happen to a better agency. HUMINT is the realm of used car salesmanship and lies. While I don't believe that they're guilty of what Pelosi and co. say they are (because they can't keep their mouths shut about anything that might be worth bragging about to Democrat congressmen), they've been underhanded and deserving of comeuppance for some time.
