Wattsburg, Pa. Vice President Joe Biden visited a small town on the outskirts of Erie today to talk to rural folks about federal stimulus money that can be used to expand broadband access to the Internet for rural areas that typically have poor connections.
Apparently stimulus money and broadband are not all that interesting to the local folk here: Only around 100 or so people have showed up so far to hear Biden talk at noon at Seneca High School off Route 8 in Wattsburg.
The room looked so sparse that about 30 or so chairs were removed by volunteers to give the illusion of a full house.
The effect didn't exactly work.

Well that is a shame.
Whoa! That’s Erie!
And this moron is FROM Pennsylvania, isn’t he?
And Sarah can draw how many?
Wow. If I had known Biden was going to be in Erie today I would have gone just for the laughs.
Why doesn’t the brain-dead VP talk about tax cuts and easing regulations so private companies can set up broadband access to rural areas instead of taxpayers paying for it? Democrats are so predictable with this crap. Same thing during the winter: They offer millions of dollars in heating assistance for the poor rather than increasing energy supply.
Tens of thousands at the drop of a hat.
‘And Sarah can draw how many?’
YES! I was thinking the same thing. If Plugs wants a big crowd in the future, he should just call Sarah. She could promise to sit in a chair and nap the whole time and still draw 20k.
WOW!!!
That’s amazing! When only 100 people show up to see the VICE PRESIDENT of THE UNITED STATES, that’s a terrible sign, no matter where the event is!! The Vice President should be able to draw a crowd of 100 out in the desert.
Biden is only of interest to those who want to see the next verbal slapstick foot-in-mouth incident. After a while it isn’t funny anymore.
ANyway we can get his schedule and have a tea party for them.
I suppose in Obama's world "rural folks" never heard of a satellite dish.
‘Well that is a shame.’
I think our illegitimate President wants it that way. Fewer people in the crowd means that fewer people hear The Sheriff when he gaffes. If Biden says something really stupid and no one is in the room, does he still make a sound?
I've been through that area, the locals who showed up probably thought an auction was in progress.
Well, at least he’s from a coal mining family.

What’s the number of that web site? Stand up and tell us, Joe!
Obamination/Biden’s idea of broadband is to spend $7.2 billion to give rural access all of 768kbps down/200kbps up.
I’ve been watching this because I’m rural and have three choices — 1) dialup, 2) Satellite (AAAAAGH!! Been there done that!), and 3) Wireless. Right now we’re with Alltel wireless 3G which doesn’t have a cap, but once our contract is up we’ll be forced into a Verizon 5G cap.
Sooner or later the battle lines are going to be drawn. On one side will be ISPs and their drive for huge profits and lids on the pipes. The other side will consist of Google, Hulu, Netflix, and all those content providers who can’t wait to sell you bandwith-eating entertainment services.
The intelligent wish not to bide their precious time with Biden and the sheeple get their jollies elsewhere besides attending old buffoonish white guy speeches! Yawn!! There’s plenty of those they can see on the TV inbetween Michael Jackson coverage.
Has anyone except me noticed that Biden seems to have disappeared off the face of the Earth? I’m convinced that even this minimal appearance was really a look alike.
In Mexico, so these things don’t happen, they pay people to STAND IN, as actors, making it all look like there is great overwhelming support.
Besides they want the cold, hard cash. If they can't sell it on the street...they don't care!!
yeah, but it’s been what, two weeks since we heard from Biden? I need a laugh and this guy is as good as Chevy Chase.
I think I’d show up just for the chance to tell Biden to his face what a ridiculous poltroon he is.
20,000 on a hot humid day on a rumor that she might show up!
You forget to add some of the 100 were Secret Service protection...and local police.
They’re missing a bet here. They could put millions to work with “green” jobs - by having them go around to these sham events as shills. They could plump up the audiences and give everybody that warm, inclusive feeeeeeeeling...;-}
(I guess I shouldn’t be giving these klowns any ideas)
1600 showed up in Erie for Bush a few weeks ago.
Removing chairs didn’t work? Yes, that’s the kind of imbeciles who voted for the dumbest VP in history.
Buffalo??? That was Erie County, PENNSYLVANIA and not Erie County New York.
1600 showed up in Erie for Bush a few weeks ago.
And each paid over $100 for the honor.
Tickets to see Biden this afternoon were FREE!
That’s what unemployed need, broad band, beer, to keep them busy.
Only around 100 or so brain dead people have showed up.
Fixed
Oops......
I’d go see Biden, just to ask him about his nice hair plugs.

Despite overcast skies and unseasonably chilly weather, about 50 people lined up outside Seneca High School in Wattsburg two hours before a scheduled noon speech by Vice President Joe Biden in the gymnasium.
The crowd of students and other residents doubled to about 100 after Secret Service agents permitted the doors to be opened.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Secret Service opened the doors? - BREACH!!!!

That's one Bureaucrat for every 20 people
They could have broken out into study groups - lol

It gets even better - lol

WATTSBURG, Penn., July 1, 2009 Wattsburg, PA citizens are overjoyed with Vice President Joe Biden and companys Rural Broadband Tour. But the town also serves as a benchmark for public broadband access.
~snip~
When asked if the district plans on issuing a grant application, LaPlasca said the school system already has what it needs.
***************************
Good move Joe - show up to a place that already has broadband - lol - nice roll-out for that billion dollars allocated for ‘stuff-we-already-have’
Me too...like "Do they itch?,"..."Do they tickle?,"... "Can you tell when sometimes people have a hard time keeping their eyes from wandering upward to them?," and..."Do you fist-bump with other hair-plugs men when you pass each other on the street, or do you try not to notice out of a desire to be treated with that same respect?"
"Do you need to alert barbers when you go in for haircuts or color so they will be gentle and not pull any of them out?" "How fast do they grow?" "They grow, don't they?"
I have so many curiosities. I think he'd be nice and answer my questions.
Be sure to ask him why his son arrested and illegally held Larry Sinclair in jail.
Yeahyeahyeah piss, good one—I’m writng that one down. I wonder where his next “show” is? I hope he doesn’t start charging for tickets. He could make a MINT! Dude is a superstar!
Maybe the “unseasonably chilly (global warming) weather” kept the crowds away—they were worried they’d pass out from heat stroke.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 1, 2009
VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO BRING BROADBAND, JOBS TO MORE AMERICANS
Announces Availability of the $4 Billion in Recovery Act Loans and Grants to Increase Broadband Access and Adoption
WATTSBURG, PA Vice President Biden today announced the availability of $4 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act loans and grants to help bring broadband service to un-served and underserved communities across America. This is the first round of Recovery Act funding aimed at expanding broadband access to help bridge the technological divide and create jobs building out Internet infrastructure.
Vice President Biden was joined today by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski and Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper at Seneca High School, the first stop on the Presidents National Rural Tour.
“Todays announcement is a first step toward realizing President Obamas vision of a nationwide 21st-century communications infrastructure one that encourages economic growth, enhances Americas global competitiveness and helps address many of Americas most pressing challenges,” said Vice President Biden.
The Recovery Act provided a total of $7.2 billion to the Commerce Departments National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the U.S. Department of Agricultures Rural Utilities Service (RUS) to accelerate broadband deployment in areas of the country that have been without the high-speed infrastructure. Of that funding, NTIA will utilize $4.7 billion to deploy broadband infrastructure in un-served and underserved areas in the United States, expand public computer center capacity and encourage sustainable adoption of broadband service. RUS will invest $2.5 billion to facilitate broadband deployment in rural communities.
“The Commerce Departments Broadband Technology Opportunities Program will reach the last frontiers of Americas information landscape, and the investments it makes in inner-city neighborhoods and rural communities will spur innovation and pave the way for private capital to follow,” Secretary Locke said. “This first wave of funding will help create jobs, jumpstart additional investment and provide model projects that can better inform our national broadband strategy.”
“The funding were announcing today will carry out President Obamas goal to expand broadband to communities that lack access to it,” Secretary Vilsack said. “The President is committed to bringing the educational and economic benefits of the Internet to all communities.”
“Access to high-speed Internet is no longer a luxury, but an essential tool to compete in this 21st-century economy. The availability of this technology is critical to attracting the business and development that will create the good paying jobs that stay in the United States,” said Congresswoman Dahlkemper. “I am so pleased that Vice President Biden and the administration chose Western Pennsylvania to announce this critical broadband initiative - a region that will benefit from this strategic investment.”
NTIA and RUS will be accepting applications for loans, grants and loan/grant combinations to be awarded by each agency under a single application form. This collaborative approach will ensure that the agencies activities are complementary and integrated, make the best use of taxpayer funds and make it easier for applicants to apply for funding. This is the first of three rounds of funding the Agriculture and Commerce Departments will provide.
Vice President Biden also announced today that Commerce and USDA officials will host public workshops in July to share information about the funding availabilities and the application process. Forums will be held in Boston, Mass.; Charleston, W.Va.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Memphis, Tenn.; Lonoke, Ark.; Birmingham, Ala.; Billings, Mont.; Albuquerque, N.M.; and Los Angeles, Calif.
Applications will be accepted beginning July 14, 2009, through 5:00 p.m. EDT on August 14, 2009. The complete details of this Notice of Funding Availability are available at http://www.broadbandusa.gov.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009. Good chance even the most hardcore of Erie Democrats were busy tending to their flooded septic tanks.
This is great news. As the Vice President said yesterday, (I am paraphrasing) “Imagine if we had only strung electric lines to the cities and not rural communities when we were beginning to electrify the country back in the 1890s. Imagine if telephones lines were not strung from town to town because it would have been too expensive.”
It is unacceptable in this day and age to deny rural communities access to communications technology that will bring better health care, education, innovation and jobs.
And by the way, those of us who actually attended the Vice President’s announcement in Wattsburg know that there were closer to 400 people in the audience, not counting staffers and media.
Check the video from the Erie Times News (goerie.com) and readers can count heads for yourself.
Also, know that the writer of the above-referenced Pittsburgh Trib-Review blog post is a conservative columnist who used to work for Bush and Santorum.
Obama appoints Biden to handle stimulus trillions: "I'm Sorry I'm Not an Economist"

Vice President Joe Biden said it was above [his] pay grade to explain in detail the methodology the White House uses to estimate the number of jobs created or saved by the economic stimulus legislation, but stressed that there had been no reasonable challenges to the estimates. **** Im sorry Im not an economist, Biden said as he was describing the methodology. My background is foreign policy and the constitution. (Excerpt) Read more at spectator.org ...

(Reuters) A fund of hedge funds run by two members of VP Joe Biden's family was marketed exclusively by firms controlled by Texas financier Allen Stanford, charged by regulators with an $8 billion fraud, the Wall Street Journal said. The Bidens $50 million fund was jointly branded between the Bidens' Paradigm Global Advisors LLC and a Stanford Financial Group entity, and was known as the Paradigm Stanford Capital Management Core Alternative Fund, the paper said. Stanford-related companies marketed the fund to investors and also invested about $2.7 million of their own money in the fund, the paper said, citing a lawyer for Paradigm.
Paradigm Global Advisors is owned through a holding company by the vice president's son, Hunter, and Joe Biden's brother, James, according to the paper. Paradigm's attorney, Marc LoPresti, who represents Hunter Biden and James Biden, as well as Paradigm, told the paper he did not know which Stanford entity invested the roughly $2.7 million. He told the paper the Bidens NEVER met or communicated with Stanford.
