Iwo Jima hero shot to death in motel parking lot [God Bless Clair C. Chaffin, 83]

Florence County sheriff’s deputies have arrested two suspects, including a 16-year-old, they say were involved in a fatal shooting outside a Florence hotel room Monday morning. *snip*

A native of Jackson, Mich., Chaffin landed at Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945, according to a February 2008 report in The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun.

He dropped out of high school in the 10th grade to join the Navy and “even the score” for the death of his two brothers, Elmer and Kenneth, in the war, according to the September newsletter of the Gator Detachment of the Marine Corps League Inc. in Gainesville, Fla. He also sang in the Great Lakes Naval Choir.

participated in four South Pacific campaigns: Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian,
and Iwo Jima.
On the Pacific Island of Saipan, his duties were anything but mundane. He
delivered three babies, performed a tracheotomy on a fellow Marine in a fox
hole while a Japanese Zero strafed either side, and rescued seven Marines
who were wounded and trapped in a fire zone between friendly and enemy
lines. For his heroic efforts in saving, treating and moving those men to
safety, he was awarded our nation’s third highest medal, the Silver Star.

Please don't make that presumption. Many claimed to be Vietnam Veterans who were phonies that were part of the anti-war crowd looney lefties. It is happening again now. The book Stolen Valor provides documentation that many that claimed to be Vietnam Veterans supporting the left never served in the military at all or never served in Vietnam. You can also do a search on Winter Soldier for more about the phonies that were used for political purposes. The left did not just recently become devious.

I'm sensing that the Marine hero put up a fight. I understand that there needs to be a full investigation and a fair trial of those indicted for this terrible crime. But something deep inside me keeps wondering, in the event the two “citizens” arrested in this case are brought to trial and convicted, if Judge Sotomayor would consider them to be the victims.
