Ithaca drafts bike-registration law

Anyone who rides a bike anywhere in the city would have to register it with the City of Ithaca or face a $10 fine, based on a law being considered tonight by Common Council.

The law would apply not just to city residents, but to anyone who rides in the city, including visitors

The purpose of the new law is to support and encourage bicycle riding, to assist in documenting bikes for planning purposes, to disseminate information to bike riders, and to facilitate the return of lost or stolen bikes, according to the Common Council's resolution.

Only a group of liberals could think that forcing people to register or face a fine encourages anything.

Ithaca is the City of Evil.

Charging $10 bucks is sure gonna help that goal.

The Onion and Scrappleface sure have their work cut out for them.

That anyone would think that requiring registration of a bike would encourage people to ride more.....

Truly liberalism is a mental disease.

What about people who are bike touring through the city?

Or visiting?

What are they going to do? Have bike checkpoints now just like the car ones?

Do they really want to tie up their police department with that kind of needless busywork?

I grew up in Toledo, Ohio and we registered our bicycles in the 50’s. HOWEVER, it was voluntary for the purpose of recovery if stolen. I even had a license plate.

"Registration" is never about bikes, or boats, or guns, or cars.

What gets registered is people. So that liberals and other fascists can control people.

10$ this year, but next year, because of the evil Republicans, they’ll have to raise the fee to 20$...then it will go to 100$.

“It’s only 8$ a month to ride your bike, who can complain about that??”

The American Public GETS WHAT IT DESERVES, ALWAYS!!

A long winded way of saying "The purpose of the new law is to tax bikes" -- after they've already been sales taxed, of course.

"I'm supportive of it just because of the basic premise of having bicycles returned," said Alderman J.R. Clairborne, D-2nd, who chairs the Common Council committee that oversaw the legislation.

The police department already hosts a voluntary bicycle registration, Ithaca Police Chief Ed Vallely said. But they recover so many bikes, they have one entire garage dedicated to housing them, and they hold a yearly auction to get rid of the bikes that are never claimed.

Democrats never let facts or reality prevent them from imposing their stupidity upon the people.

Excellent point. That’s what “liberalism” (fascism with a smiley face) is all about.

Bicycle licenses are mandatory in practically every city, for the peoples own good of course.
Same as dog licenses, cat licenses, motorbikes, mopeds, boats, cars, atv's, trailers etc. etc. etc.

If it has wheels, rolls or moves and has a potential for people to have fun with or on, it needs to be licensed and regulated, for our own good of course.

The new fad these days, is to make people wear helmets if they can fall off something they are having fun on. soon there will need to be helmet licences, because they make recognition dificult, so they will need to have an identification number on them.
So lost helmets can be returned, of course....
