A total of 17 people have been infected with Clostridium difficile at a hospital in Moray.

NHS ...revealed on Wednesday that two elderly people with the C.diff infection had died.

Two wards have been closed to new admissions but health officials said the patients were giving no cause for concern.

The health board said the deaths happened in April and that both the patients had been frail.

The drug that does work is very expensive.

Your note: The drug that does work is very expensive.

From the story: both the patients had been frail

Certainly not going to waste a very expensive drug on frail, elderly patients . . . just let 'em die. If they don't die fast enough, kill 'em.

. . . coming soon to a health system near you!

They are lucky to have free health care, even if it is killing them.

I am acquainted with an 82 year-old man, an extremely resilient sort, who has been in treatment for C diff for upwards of a year. Even the most effective drugs are not quick and easy cures. Severe persistent diarrhea will knock off someone who is "frail" no matter what you treat them with.

Unfortunately, c. diff. is not unique to socialized medicine.

> Approximately 20% of individuals who are hospitalized acquire C difficile during hospitalization, and more than 30% of these patients develop diarrhea. Thus, C difficile colitis is currently one of the most common nosocomial infections.

> United States: C difficile infection primarily occurs in hospitalized patients, causing as many as 3 million cases of diarrhea and colitis per year.

Don’t allow yourself to be admitted to a hospital unless death is the obvious alternative.

Been there. It took a couple of rounds of Flagyl to get over. It is no disease to mess around with.

The problem with cleaning hospitals of the c.diff. bacteria is that the bacteria will convert to spores when stressed. And about the only thing strong enough to eliminate the spores is bleach.

Clostridia are obligate anaerobes. Has anyone tried hyperbaric oxygen as a treatment?
