Poll: Majority of Americans Believe Abortion Hurts Women Physically, Mentally

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a new national survey conducted by the Polling Company for the pro-life organization Americans United for Life, a majority of Americans say they know someone who has had an abortion. A majority of those surveyed also believe that abortion hurts women.

The Polling Company, a nationally known firm, asked the questions about abortion's effects during a May 17-18 survey with 800 adults across the country.

Asked if they personally knew someone who has had an abortion, some 68 percent said they know a woman who had one while 30 percent said they did not.

Of those who knew a post-abortive woman, 55 percent described her abortion as a negative experience while just 33 percent described it as a positive one and 12 percent either didn't know or would not answer the question.

Asked to think of abortion and women in general, the survey asked respondents if they thought abortion "is almost always a good thing for a woman or almost always a bad thing for a woman."

The survey found 53 percent say abortion is almost always a bad thing and a tiny 13 percent said abortion is almost always a good thing for women. Another 21 percent said neither and 13 percent didn't know or didn't answer the question.

Asked to describe any ways in which women may be adversely affected by an abortion, respondents to the Polling Company survey gave multiple answers.

Some 51 percent said an abortion would cause women negative emotional impact, 46 percent said an abortion would hurt women psychologically, 38 percent cited adverse spiritual or religious impact, 33 percent said abortions might cause medical or physical problems for women, and 25 percent cited abortion as potentially causing a negative impact on future relationships with men.

Another 24 percent said abortion would cause all of the above problems for women -- making it so all of the potential problems, except for an impact on future relationships, are post-abortion problems a majority of Americans say women will likely experience.

Just 3 percent of those polled said women would face none of the five potential problems after an abortion and another 3 percent either didn't know or did not answer the question.

Of course it does. Any emphatic Supreme Court Justice would know this.

One of the hidden issues with abortion is that large numbers of women have regrets about having had an abortion. It should be talked about more. Abortion has an emotional element to it, not just the actual physical operation. The physical operation ends but the emotional baggage can stay with a woman.

This is something that a liberal should understand, because liberals tend to like talking about our feelings, regrets about life choices, etc. But on this one, there is silence on the whole subject. It’s like they think a woman has an abortion one day and never thinks about it ever again.

I personally know three women who have had abortions and have had psyholgoical symptoms for many years after the murder. I don’t know any who haven’t.

Amen. Point out the consequences of abortion choice will get more benefits than laws.

It’s murder. Unless you’re a cold blooded muderer ala John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy etc you’ve just committed murder. Of course it bothers women.

If we’re going to allow rampant abortion in every clinic, hospital, Doctor’s office and alley, we should at least council these women to inform them of the psychological implications. I suppose in most cases there is limited consultation.

Hmmmm, I know that the pro-life message has been resonating with the American public, but here’s an additional arsenal that can be used.

Since the left love to make abortion all about the woman and her health and her rights, and always ignores the baby, it’s been difficult to make headway while “debating” the abortion issue.

However, perhaps the rebuttal a pro-lifer can now say is “why do you want to hurt women? Why do you want to see women scarred for life? Do you have any sympathy at all for the emotional and psychological pain a woman goes through when she murders her child?”

Put the pro-abortion crowd on the defensive, for once!

Of course abortions are harmful. A lot of women have had more than one, some seem to use abortion as their primary source of birth control. Some could care less about the children they are murdering, but any woman with a conscience that registers against their self interest will suffer from willfully murdering an innocent child.

The answer of stopping abortion starts with changing the language from fetus to baby. A human face needs to be put on the child without a face to the world. Also, in terms of special needs children there needs to be an end to the idea that they are imperfect and there must be social acceptance of them on a grand scale. These are things that you cannot legislate and I think going the path of legislation is the wrong path. Having said that there should not be a federal law that explicitly states that the right is enshrined in the constitution

Ask any sane woman and they will all agree.
Find one that disagrees and then ask them who their shrink is.

I know a woman who is a committed feminist liberal. However, on the subject of abortion rights, where one would expect stridency, she is silent. She has calculated the approximate day when her child would have been born, and every year when that day comes around, she regrets her “choice.”
