A VOLKS WAGEN FOR OUR TIME (Lonsberry)
boblonsberry.com ^ | 05/20/09 | Bob Lonsberry

Posted on 05/20/2009 8:41:42 AM PDT by shortstop

I wonder how many people Obama killed yesterday.

Arguably, it was in the tens of thousands.

With one stroke of the presidential pen, surrounded by lackeys on short leashes, he designed the automobile of the future. No more will Detroit make cars according to people’s tastes, needs and market demand.

Now, we will have Obama cars.

And why not. Hitler designed cars, why should our Fuehrer be denied the pleasure?

Without congressional approval, without explaining it to the people, without trying to build public support, Caesar has declared that vehicles will get more gas mileage and give off less carbon dioxide. A man who’s never taken an engineering class has redesigned the American automobile.

And the near-daily assault on our system and liberties continues. The imperial presidency has given us not a king, but a pharaoh, a sun god whose every whim is our command.

But this isn’t about the arrogance of power, this is about how many of us will have to die because of this man’s arrogance of power.

To meet the dictator’s whim, American automobiles will have to be far smaller and lighter. Families accustomed to SUVs and mini-vans will have to crowd into light, compact sardine cans.

Which will spill them like so much produce onto the highway when they wreck.

See, American vehicles get the gas mileage they get because American vehicles are heavy. And they aren’t heavy to make them less fuel efficient, they are heavy to make them safe. All that reinforced steel, the stuff that holds a car together in a wreck, Obama’s formula means that has to go.

Lighter vehicles get better gas mileage. Obama has decreed that we get better gas mileage. That means he has decreed that we drive lighter vehicles.

That means he has decreed that more of us will die on the highways.

As the use of minivans and SUVs went up, the highway mortality rate went down. Why? Because people in minivans and SUVs are safer. Safety is directly proportional to vehicle size. The death rate in small vehicles is higher than the death rate in large vehicles.

And he is making vehicles smaller.

Hopefully it won’t be one of your children who has to be sacrificed for Chancellor Obama’s volks wagen.

But it’s more than dead people. It’s also expense and availability.

Pick-up trucks, for example, will probably become the most-expensive vehicles on the highway. To meet the mileage and emission standards, the most common single vehicle in American today – the pick-up truck – will probably be priced between $75,000 and $100,000, some have estimated.

Every car, the White House says, will probably increase in price something like $1,300. The argument is that that will be made up in savings on gasoline – except that new Democrat policies are expected to dramatically increase the price of gasoline.

And the electricity won’t be cheap, either. With the Caesar, as a candidate, pledging to bankrupt any company that tried to open a coal-fired power plant, and with his administration ruling out nuclear power and canceling federal leases to search for oil and gas, the price of electricity will soar and plugging a car in will cost more than pulling it up to the pump.

Also, you can forget four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and air conditioning. Those are gas-guzzling luxuries that can’t be accommodated under the new rules.

The federal government has metastasized into something at direct variance with the Constitution, it is a monster that seeks to control every corner of our lives and our economy.

And now the Fuehrer is designing cars.

Maybe we misunderstood the campaign motto. As some have suggested, maybe what he was saying was: Chains you can believe in.

And live to regret.

Unfortunately, the rest of us will also be impacted.

Also don’t forget that when we use less fuel, gov’t at all levels will have to find new ways to makeup for lost fuel taxes. I also expect the cost of fuel to go up higher for other economic reasons. Trust me, this will be most costly fuel efficient vehicles ever produced.

Clearly Barrack Obortion is becoming more like Hitler every day. Take the banks, take the finance, take the auto-industry and attempt to limit free speech.
The tragedy is for the most part the citizenry is so dumbed down that they haven’t a clue that they voted themselves into slavery.

Reading this article (being from Rochester, I used to listen to Lonsberry), I’m thinking maybe I’ll get a Jeep sooner rather than later - while I still can.

Generally true, but safety is also proportional to the engineering. The early 2000s Ford F150 was big and heavy, but it was also a death trap compared to well-engineered cars that weighed half as much.

But, yes, all else being equal, mass usually offers more protection.

CAFE Obama: Proposed mileage standards would kill more Americans than Iraq War

Excerpt:
The Obama administration’s proposed mileage standards that will be announced today (May 19, 2009) may kill more Americans at a faster rate than the Iraq War — his signature issue in the 2008 presidential campaign.

It depends. The CAFE standards regulate fleets, that is, all of a manufacturers’ products, not individual vehicles. You might still be able to buy large, safe, vehicles made in this country, but the price will be inflated because you will be subsidizing the production of the company’s eco-deathtraps that people don’t want to buy. People can go to say, Europe, and buy a new Volkswagen or Mercedes, and import it into the U.S.

If Henry Ford were alive today he would say screw you we no longer manufacture cars in the US. I only wish we had real men running these companies. If we did GM,Ford, and Chrysler would hold a press conference and say: We are now closing All Plants in the US, all assets will be sold off and distributed to our valued employees as a severance package. Sorry you don’t like it but this is the change you were promised. I hope you like it.

Yes. You pay import taxes at a rate of about 30 percent. I’m not sure but I think the rate for Asian imports might be lower. What our Overlords are doing is to impose a regulatory regime that only affects what they consider to be the “little people” who need constant and pervasive government supervision. The Algores and Waxmans and BOs of the world will continue to be able to drive large, safe vehicles. The wealthy will continue to pick up new cars during their European vacations.

It is stupid to say all cars must have x mpg, without considering the needs of the person buying the car. There is no 45 mpg vehicle that will serve octo-mom and her brood. What are large families to do? Drive two or three cars? What about carpooling, and family trips? I need my sport ute and I am not giving it up without a fight.

Which brings to mind another point: I may well be tempted to keep my Honda Pilot a few more years instead of trading it in on an Obamacrapmobile. Way to destroy the car industry, Obama.

Just for the record, European cars get better gas milage than the the US will even in 2016 and there are fewer road deaths.

Why? Because the exam requriements for getting a license are more rigorous.

If you have ever driven in Germany and then driven in the US, then you know Americans DO NOT know how to drive. They are rude, and careless and reckless.

The size of the car isn’t the issue, it is the lack of driver education.

This article is absurd. Why shouldn’t everyone drive an Abrahms tank? Shouldn’t Volvo be subsidized. Give me a break. There are lots of good things to critize THE ONE about. Finally doing something about America’s oil addiction is not one. GWB was a coward for not doing this on Sept. 12, 2001.

Unfortunately, I can’t laugh at that joke. My property fronts on a small river that floods in rainy times. I have actually had several people try to tell me that the reason for the flooding is that the drainage ditches need to be cleaned out! Never mind that the drainage ditches are well above the flood plain and they do their job until the stream floods over them! Some people just don’t have a working brain, the amazing thing is that many of them manage to make a living, get married and raise children all without the benefit of a functional brain.

Ok, you call me a Troll but let me ask you some fuzzy math: The US has 22 billion barrels of proven reserves. That amounts to 4 years of total US consumption. If there are 3 times as much oil as estimted that means there are 12 years of reserves left. So how does that make the US oil independent? Stop being a stupid member of the stupid party and face reality. Cheap gas is not a fundamental American value. The uniqueness of the US lies in its ability to innovate, not the unrestricted exploitation of limited natural resources.

The real TROLLS and bains of conservatives are those who do not wish to see the world for what it is and only wish to see it for what they want it to be. Santa Claus isn't real my FRiend and the oil you buy funds the terrorists who want to kill you.

I have gone by one credo for many years.
You can make it cheap, you can make it quickly, you can make it good.
Pick two for any item you can name.

You can make it cheap and quickly, but it won't be good.

You can make it cheap and good, but it wont be quickly.

You can make it quickly and good, but it won't be cheap.

Anyone that tells you differently is a liar.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

But, yes, all else being equal, mass usually offers more protection.

Where the hell did you ever get that idea? The two-ton cars of the 40's and 50's were death traps compared to a one-ton Honda of today. Volvo? Mercedes? Extremely safe, yet not "heavy."

....but safety is also proportional to the engineering

Extreme and rare example,: a Corvette or Lotus Elan, which absorbing all the energy of the crash when their plastic bodies shatter, allows the driver to walk away unscathed.

Looking for Danger? Mix traffic with high-bumper SUV's, 18 wheelers, and pick-ups on the road with lower passenger vehicles. An 18-wheeler is going to have more trouble flattening an SUV than a Honda Civic, but there's a good chance the number of dead will be equal.

Americans DO NOT know how to drive. They are rude, and careless and reckless.

Unfortunately, compared to the Vaterland, we Yanks ARE horrible drivers. OTOH, when they do have an accident in Wurstland, everybody dies, especially on the Autobahn! But in accidents and deaths per mile driven, we are way down in the international rankings, not the least reason being the amazing prevalence of drunks operating motor vehicles in this country.

We'll see how this changes as Achmed and Fatima (and the other wives) pack the 12 children into the old Opel and set out on the Autobahn. Especially if they dumb down the license requirements so as not to discriminate against the Turd Worlders overrunning Europe.
