Roman Catholics’ War Over Abortion (NYT Barf Alert!)
New York Times ^ | 5/9/09 | Peter Steinfels

Posted on 05/10/2009 11:54:25 AM PDT by wagglebee

Discord is nothing new for Roman Catholicism. But the controversy surrounding the appearance of President Obama at the University of Notre Dame’s commencement on May 17 suggests that run-of-the mill discord among American Catholics is escalating into something closer to civil war.

Just watch that airplane circling over the famous Golden Dome of Notre Dame’s Main Building and the spire of the university’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The plane pulls a banner with a picture of an aborted fetus.

The group flying the banner is unhappy not just with the university but also, according to a spokesman quoted in The South Bend Tribune, with “the pro-life community at Notre Dame.”

“If they were doing a good job of reaching the campus,” he said, “it’s unlikely Obama would have been invited.”

Now listen to Bishop Robert W. Finn, bishop of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese in Missouri. “We are at war!” he told an anti-abortion convention on April 18. “We are engaged in a constant warfare with Satan.”

Although this war must never involve violence, he said, and Christians must love the human enemies who come under Satan’s power, “even without their fully realizing it,” he went on to say that the most dangerous enemies were not those openly attacking the church but “more subtle enemies.” These included Catholics who “attack the most fundamental tenets of the church’s teachings.”

In the next breath, he condemned Notre Dame for inviting Mr. Obama to give the commencement address and receive an honorary degree. Bishop Finn did not spell out whether the invitation was the work of Satan.

Mr. Obama has an opportunity at least to acknowledge the profound moral differences surrounding abortion and say something thoughtful about how a democratic society can negotiate them.

There is NOTHING to "negotiate"!

Bishop Finn did not spell out whether the invitation was the work of Satan.

Of course old scratch had his hand in the middle of this.

Obama himself is quite the spectacle of evil. There have been small outbreaks of Obama’s kind of politics in the USA before, but never before has it had such mighty legs to stride across our land as now.

I had a wee hope back in the campaign that Obama’s small-o orthodox Christian testimony was genuine, although I would never have voted for the Democrat. It apparently isn’t genuine, and pushing deceit to the point of bothering to make such a statement is a mark of great spiritual evil.

This clown wouldn't know a *real* Catholic if he tripped over one. There's no discord,Comrade. The Unitarian/Universalists who are pretending to be Catholics will welcome Hussein...the *real* Catholics are nauseated by the prospect of his visit.

Peter Steinfels is the perfect religion editor for the New York Times. He has the two basic requirements:

1. He knows nothing about religion.

2. He doesn’t believe in God.

Also, 3. he shares the NY Times’ hatred and contempt for Catholicism.

So, it’s kind of a trifecta.

There is no divide NYT is addressing the Catholics that go to church twice a year... have about 10 caveats to their beliefs! Nancy pelosi chris matthews...The other group are cradle catholics don’t understand..and drifted away like John Kerry that claim because they were altar boys @ 10yrs old that somehow they are exempted from all rules..

The catholic church has Been non conformer culturally for all its existence.... Thats how it survives!! The truth is the truth!! How can it waver?/

How can there be a "Roman Catholics’ War Over Abortion" between Catholics? I thought the issue was long settled.

And if there was still a lingering doubt or two, when Pelosi revealed her profound ignorance, she was repeatedly corrected.

Nor is there doubt about giving honors to someone when doing so suggests their beliefs and behaviors are condoned and encouraged by The Church.

The only doubt is if there are any earthly consequences for catholics who flout Church Doctrine. There certainly doesn't seem to be any consequences for "catholic" politicians or for those who seek the affections of obama by honoring him with a Law degree of all things.

It appears that Steinfels is a Catholic, a professor at Fordham U. and was associated with Commonweal the liberal Catholic opinion magazine. As backup he disputes the auhority of the National Association of Catholic bishops statement on abortion and quotes from the lefty Jesuit magazine America.

Occasionally, they really ought to let some Catholics offer perspective on these kinds of issues over at The Times.

The Commonwealites, themselves very comfortable with dissent on abortion and many other left-wing issues, don't really get it.

Yes, and they used to regularly pretend that Fr. Richard P. McBrien spoke for the Church.

And that Frances Kissling of Catholics for a Free Choice was a Catholic.

Fordham is a mixed bag, like all the other Jesuit universities.

The CINOs are getting uncomfortable. With over a third of all American bishops, with five current or future American Princes of the Church now a part of the fringe they complain about, and not one bishop agreeing with them, they have taken to quoting often unnamed hierarchs in Europe as denigrating ALL American bishops. They are becoming desperate to hold off the strengthening of Catholic belief long enough so that they will be able to get a Catholic funeral without repenting.

The catholic church has Been non conformer culturally for all its existence.

Of course. The church has always been and always will be out of step. By design and purpose. If the Catholic Church finds itself in harmony with the world at large it will have become Episcopalians and thus no church at all.
