Sen. Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Democrat, said part of the reason that he left the Republican Party last week was disillusionment with its health-care priorities, and suggested that had the Republicans taken a more moderate track, Jack Kemp may have won his battle with cancer.
Mr. Specter, responding to a question from CBS' Bob Schieffer over whether he had let down Pennsylvanians who wanted a Republican to represent them, said he thought his priorities were more in line with those of the Democrats.
"Well, I was sorry to disappoint many people. Frankly, I was disappointed that the Republican Party didn't want me as their candidate," Mr. Specter said on "Face the Nation." "But as a matter of principle, I'm becoming much more comfortable with the Democrats' approach. And one of the items that I'm working on, Bob, is funding for medical research."
Mr. Specter continued: "If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today. And that research has saved or prolonged many lives, including mine."
Mr. Kemp died Saturday of cancer. He had been the running mate of 1996 Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole.

Gee. A Democrat for less than a week and he's already got the low-blow talking points down pat.
Arlen is proof only the good die young.
Spector had cancer when he was in the GOP and he is still alive. I would suggest he go to Cuba for his next round of treatments.
Good riddance, indeed. Or did the RATs make him say that as some sort of hazing ritual for newbies? After all, he couldn’t possibly be that stupid, could he? Yes, HE CAN!
Specter is a scumbag. Where’s the GOP? Why aren’t they blasting this despicable human being.... ?
>> Too bad Specter won his battle.
Never liked the guy politically, but it’s good he overcame his battle with cancer.
2. Nixon's health care plan and agenda was not defeated by the GOP, it was defeated by senate liberals who wanted “medicare for all” a.k.a. Single Payer and had the full support of labor and they felt they could enact the legislation with the next Democratic President. If they had let Nixon enact such a sweeping reform and middle class entitlement it would have been the Death of the Democratic Party.
In fact, in the history of Health Care Reform it has always been Democrats who derailed meaningful reforms in the hopes that they could get a better deal at a later date.
Obama may think health care reform will be a cake walk, but unless he signs on to H.R. 676 “Medicare For All” Bill, his parties liberals will find a way to sabotage it. It's all or nothing when it comes to socialism with them.
You are mistaken; this very accurate list of supposed damages was not caused by the GOP - it is those D@MNED conservatives! Those racist, redneck, gun loving, bible-thumping backwoods conservatives! /sarc (I think)
“Heck even in the past 20 twenty years.”
Disregard the extra 20 in my post.
If we didn’t spend SO much money on AIDS, we would have more to spend on Cancer Research!! THAT is the LIBS fault.
Here is the new form.
“If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today.”
At the time Nixon declared war on cancer, there was the sentiment that you might be able to approach it like the Manhattan Project or the Man-on-the-Moon effort: if you put enough money into it you could solve the problem once and for all. Over time, it become apparent that cancer is more complicated than that, it’s not really one disease, but several. The current medical system in the U.S. has serious problems, but overall, it’s been more effective in treating, and even curing various cancers than more socialized systems such as those in Britain, France, or Canada. By all means, reforms need to be made to the system, but unfortunately, I don’t trust this administration to do them correctly.

Specter is a jerk. Glad he is gone from the party. I hope soon he’ll be gone from the Senate.
Then he can write a book and be a “forever victim” like Max Cleland for the Democrat party.
You're right. Cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence. While it is still often a killer, there are SO many cancer survivors walking around today, some completely cured, some in remission, and some actually living with cancer. Medical research has accomplished some wonderful things. Early testing has saved millions of lives.
I also give a lot of credit to Relay for Life, a wonderful organization that raises millions of dollars for cancer research. Go to a Relay for Life walk, and get a lump in your throat as you see cancer survivors of all ages, colors walking the first lap around the track. It is truly inspirational.
Personally, I always thought Kemp would be a pretty good Federal Reserve Chairman,
He would have made a good one I think.
