As we close in on the first 100 days of the Obama presidency, something remarkable is taking place. Americans appear to be growing up. The adolescent addiction to instant gratification seems to be not only rolling back, it is being replaced by a mature outlook that is profoundly new for a fast-food culture.
As we look at the polls, certain things are rising through the bristles of public ignorance. We now seem to be returning to a realistic vision of how long it takes to fix a sizable set of economic problems that took at least three full presidential terms to create. In one word: deregulation.
Obama knows this quite well, is ready for the long march and the inevitable failures that it will take in order to get a grip on the reality of our moment. His preparations go far beyond policy. They could result in shifts of national and political consciousness that may effect the roots of our culture in extremely good ways for a long time to come.
The American impatience with the limitations of rules has given us many good things. We should expect these good things because we live in an experimental culture where the new and the old can be tested and either might come out on top.
But the speed resulting from technological innovation has warped the American mind in too many instances. Instant electronic communication or the rapidity of air travel can create illusions about the nature of life that any culture should look at very closely. Life almost never rides in the express lane. Only death and destruction move at high velocities.
Most Americans believe that Obama is going in the right direction. They are aware of how often he makes the inevitably slow pace of recovery clear and it seems to be having a good impact. Our country has needed a long-range sense of life and of planning for quite some time, not just more snake oil heated and presented as an elixir for a cure in five minutes or less.
When Obama was criticized a few weeks ago for campaigning instead of governing as he gave strong speeches across the country, it was clear that few understood what was really going on.
His high-profile appearances were misinterpreted because so few in our media realize the importance of a new President bringing a slingshot of eloquence and logic to battle the ongoing Goliaths of American simplifiers.
The President revels in clear thinking and the improvisational nature of American democracy. This is rightly so. Ours is a political culture that should be able to think on its feet as well as Muhammad Ali did in Zaire in 1974 during the "Rumble in the Jungle."
WHERE’S THE FLIPPIN BARF ALERT?
President “revels in clear thinking” my rear.
Real “mature”...
Borrowing endless newly printed money to fix a private and public debt problem...
Brilliant plan...
This is utter gobbledygook.
More 0be TOTUS Mumbo Jumbo.
Pardon me for my ignorance, but was this actually published in a relatively prominent news source?
You just cannot make this stuff up! We are living in the midst of the greatest concentration of control and power ever witnessed in human history. The events of today are untying the freedoms of tomorrow at such a pace that I fear America will die forgotten, her people content at the teat...
I swear, I live in a parallel universe. The delusion is much stronger than I ever imagined possible.
Stanley, go back to doing your sophomoric jazz reviews, why doncha.
We need to starve the traditional media and help shape future outlets that offer a balanced view. This total control of the message across mediums...print, tv, internet news, movies/tv...has become an unstoppable force. We have small sectors of the internet and talk radio. The opposition controls everything else.
more like a spitball
Commie propaganda.
Another one trying to twist the facts to make it look like Obambi knows what he is doing.
It sure is. They are feeding this crap to the people who didn’t know anything before the idiot was elected and know even less after.
Stanley Crouch and Wynton Marsalis. Crouch should stick to writing music criticism.
“We now seem to be returning to a realistic vision of how long it takes to fix a sizable set of economic problems that took at least three full presidential terms to create. In one word: deregulation.”
Here again we see the Obama apologist using the favorite tactics of the lying left-wing dirt-bags. By simultaneously postulating that all of our economic problems are the fault of previous administrations and the result of the evil unrestrained capitalist system, Obama is therefor blameless and must be given more time to destroy our country.
The only thing that has become clear to me is that either the polls are lying through their teeth, or the public education system has really succeeded in producing a majority of drug addicted, brain dead morons that believe this pap. Maybe both.
What the f**k????????????????
We’re growing up as a people? I’m sorry, but having mommy and daddy pay for everything (like healthcare, college, etc) is the attitude of a spoiled teenager.
Polls agree with what Obama is doing? What polls? Every poll I’ve seen states that Americans HATE the direction the country is going - especially on gun control and amnesty.
What planet are these journalists living on??????????
