A handful of readers took note of this passage in my story on Steve Schmidt's and David Plouffe's appearance in Delaware last week:
[Schmidt] explained his decision to deny Palin an election night speech as a nod to the fact that the concession is a singular moment in American public life.
It begins the process by which power is transferred peacefully, he said.
Asked blogger DougJ: "Is Schmidt implying that Palin would have given an incendiary speech that would have, in some small way, disrupted the peaceful transfer of power?"
I hadn't really heard it that way, but it seemed a reasonable interpretation, so I asked Schmidt about it this weekend.
He emailed that it had nothing to do with Palin's message -- he has, he said, "no idea what the message was," but rather with the tradition of the moment.

I don’t remember whoever was running with Kerry in 2004 giving his own concession speech.
Schmidt is a loser, he didn’t want to give Sarah the right to go up there and give a great concession speech and thus, give her the limelight. Sarah came out the true winner in that campaign, she shined while the rest of them acted like idiots. No wonder they lost
Whatever Sarah Palin might have said would have been a couple of light years beyond mccain’s sad little speech. What a lousy chapter in American history brought to us by someone who is good at being shot down.
I remember reading somewhere that John Edwards made a little speech after Kerry lost in ‘04. If I can find that article, I’ll post the link.
Schmidt is a BIG loser!
He’s Meghan McLame in pants.
I believe that McCain is a man (manly man) but is locked up under some myth that courtesy = power. It does not. That is why Reagan WALKED out of the TALKS in Greenland.
Sometime-being RUDE rules.
MaCain had a bunch of metro-sexual cowards advising him.
In the 2000 and 2004 elections the losers were sore losers and did not make proper "concessions" as we know them.
An incendiary concession speech, eh? Like John Edwards gave, you mean? Or Al Gore? Or that Gore flunky, Daley, the morning after the 2000 election when he said the campaign would continue? Like those?
I remember it, at Faneuil Hall in Boston, and gracious it wasn't. Pres. Bush was deprived of a victory speech for a second time.
I hope Sarah Palin gets a resurgence. It pains me to se he so reviled by so many Americans. She doesn’t deserve that. Hopefully Obama will be exposed for the evil human that he is, and many people take a second look at Sarah.
Another way to look at it is that by not giving the speech, Gov. Palin did not concede. Chances are, she won’t ever give a concession speech :-)
Someone in the campaign intended for her to give a speech. They sent 2 speechwriters, one from the McCain campaign and one who worked regularly with just Palin, to work on a speech with her. They had a victory speech and a concession speech already written and rehearsed. I can see, though, with the disappointing results, the campaign just wanting to “get the evening over.”
Because the head of the ticket concedes, not the second banana.
This is stupid. She wasn’t doing a “concession speech,” she was trying to praise McCain. That’s what she wanted to do, according to her own statements, and what the McCain advisers prohibited.
Frankly, I think they were anxious to such up to Obama as fast as possible, and wanted to get on their backs with their little legs in the air. Palin would have got in the way of that, by making a speech that might be quoted.
It’s wrong to call the Mccain people lame; they’d have to get a hell of a lot better to qualify as merely lame.
“I hope Sarah Palin gets a resurgence.”
Oh, believe me, she IS!!!!!! Support for her is growing rapidly!
The Facebook group has well over 9,000 members, and her Facebook page has over 542,000 supporters!
Facebook is a major outlet for a lot of people and Sarah already has tremendous support there, which is only going to grow as time progresses.
Besides that, she has support among MANY other people in this country! Support for her is growing daily!
We can win this! We really can! Sarah will rise above the liberal firestorm and push forward!
We are gonna win in 2012! I know we are! We’ve gotta throw all our support behind her!
Sarah is truly AMAZING and she is the ONLY one who can unseat Obama!
Vice President losers don’t typically give speeches.
