NEWTON, Iowa Marking Earth Day with a pitch for his energy plan, President Barack Obama on Wednesday called for a "new era of energy exploration in America" and argued that his proposal would help the economy and the environment at once.
"The choice we face is not between saving our environment and saving our economy it's a choice between prosperity and decline," Obama said in his first post-election trip to Iowa, the state that launched him toward the White House. "The nation that leads the world in creating new sources of clean energy will be the nation that leads the 21st century global economy."
But Obama's promise of preserving natural resources and jump-starting the economy ran smack into the reality of this economically struggling town about 30 miles east of Des Moines. The wind energy plant where he spoke, and received a tour beforehand, is a shadow of what it replaced a Maytag Corp. appliances plant that built washers, dryers and refrigerators.
It employed some 4,000 in a town of 16,000 residents in jobs that paid about $30,000 to $40,000 a year.
Trinity Structural Towers has roughly 90 people working at the old Maytag site, a number that is expected to grow to about 140. Mark Stiles, a senior vice president at Trinity, which builds the towers that support wind turbines, said workers at his factory make about $17 an hour, plus benefits.

Pure smoke screen, and the worst part is people are going to die as a result.
So the zero’s plan is to replace industries that employ 4000 people with industries that employ 100?
Well, it was change they wanted.
The nation that secures cheap reliable sources of energy will be the nation that leads the 21st century economy.
Obama should be building nuclear plants and drilling, to secure our energy supply as quickly as possible, as well as researching the green alternatives.
Instead he is promising to sink a Trillion dollars into unproven technology, leave us exposed to another oil shock, and increase our cost of everything through his stupid cap and trade attack.
Are the feds going to go house to house looking for generators operating off their sky high wind/solar powered electric grid? Kind of like the revenuers looking for moonshiners in the South during Prohibition? Candles and fireplaces will be out, too, because they produce too much carbon. Glad I don’t live up north where people will freeze to death during the mini Ice Age that is coming while these fools are fighting “global warming”.
“...calling on every American to replace one incandescent light bulb with one compact fluorescent.”
Glen Beck had a priceless bit on today showing EPA’s nine steps to remove the hazard of a broken compact fluorescent with its load of lethal mercury exposed. The feds must be nuts to be bringing this dangerous Chinese product into our homes.
No: his plan is to replace industries that employ 4000 people with industries that employ 100, subsidized by increased taxes from 3900 people who used to create jobs.
And since the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money, he will just crank up the old printing presses and print all the money he wants.
One of my friends was charged over $300 last summer for 1 month’s electricity use (regularly just over $100) for a time when an emergency generator kicked in during a big story. Only when the electric utility ‘decided’ that this was an emergency generator and not whole house did the amount get refunded. I saw the bill.
Only with Net Metering and Off-grid regs can homeowners and businesses begin to get relief from any alt+E schemes.
SB ‘storm’ not story
Perhaps when they come for us looking for taxes, we all ought to do the same. What's the difference? It has the same value.
“Be well, John Spartan.”
He plans to explore new energy sources so he can ban them. Of course he will adopt anything that is unworkable or those source that make up a minute fraction of what we need.
I've tended to scoff at the 'muslim' references to Zero, but his balls-ahead agenda is swinging me.
Impeach now.
Piss on it all...I’m changing my tagline now.
He’s looking for new sources of wind and sun?
Of course he will adopt anything that is unworkable or those source that make up a minute fraction of what we need.
::::::::::
And tax you into poverty for using them....
He’s an idiot apparently, if he thinks we have to “explore” for Solar or Wind energy. We know where the sun is, and we know where the wind is. We don’t “explore” for them.
We simply can’t afford them because they cost more than they generate — costs which reflect the truth that they are a drain on the planet, not a boon, at this time.
I heard one of those “earth day” things today about obama I think saying that if we “fully developed” wind power, we’d create a total of 250,000 jobs — BY 2030. They lost more jobs than that in his first week on the job. That’s about 10,000 jobs a year.
